JET SET WILLY AND THE ATTIC BUG

- I wanted to explore what happens when you deliberately corrupt the Sinclair ZX Spectrum game Jet Set Willy with the attic bug.
Jet Set Willy, created by Matthew Smith and released by Software Projects in 1984.
I love the fact that they tried to spin this as a feature! "Yes we put that in to make the game more challenging" I wonder how many people believed it!
It's the same shit they pull now.. except then they quietly fix it with DLC.
It was just one guy. Matthew Smith.
It's actually the second arrow in the Attic (the one you heard but didn't see) that causes the corruption. Its vertical position is set far too low, so it overwrites the enemy collision data with copies of the arrow sprite. In fact, I think the longer you wait in the Attic, the further the arrow 'flies' and the more data gets corrupted.
This makes a lot of sense, because I knew I had definitely heard a second arrow!
I remember a magazine printing a programme you could run on the ZX Spectrum that proported to reveal a hidden room in Manic Miner. Looking at the code I was sure that it actually created a hidden room rather than reveal it. To this day these are two of the best games ever made. Great graphics are fine, but gameplay is king.
We played this for weeks on the C64 not really getting any where, until an older cousin came over who'd played it on the Speccy and showed us you could jump over the stairs to reveal more rooms.. Once we knew that we explored the whole mansion great memories.
Amazingly, I've never seen the attic bug either and I've been playing the game for almost as long. It's very interesting finally seeing how it affects the game.
In this game if you pressed the sequence of keys to spell the word WRITETYPER, you could then press groups of number keys simultaneously and be transported instantly to different rooms.
In Manic Miner you can do the same thing but it's TYPEWRITER instead.
Pretty creepy game to play when you're 7. I remember these insta-deaths too, never had any idea why it happened.
Interesting. I never knew that the bug stayed even after a new game began. I always thought that as soon as you lost all your lives and started again it would re set the game and only reactivate the bug if you went to the attic room again.
Unlike the cartridge-based consoles, where the RAM was only used for storing game variables, the ZX Spectrum had to run the entire game from RAM. This meant that it could be changed or corrupted, and you couldn't get the data back unless you reload from the original tape.
Used to love POKEing this game ,not just infinite lives but extra jump height ,falling without dying etc..also just random pokes to see what might happen ..
As a few have pointed out it was the second arrow that you hear but don't see that goes careering through the code, not the first!
I love that music
I had this game but the only thing I remember from it is the long squashing leg and foot.
It reminds me of another similar game with a squashing foot, Brian Bloodaxe, that had the Monty Python music and also the big squashing foot.
You should show a play though of that next.
I remember this from the time, I’m sure there were some pokes published in a magazine to fix it.
JET SET WILLY - 40th ANNIVERSARY
let's jump on the Banyan Tree!

I know I'm going to get punched in the playground after history lesson, but I always thought JSW was a steaming pile of shite compared to Manic Miner! I'll get my coat!
Just you wait till after school 😛

There's the banyan tree bug as well
How did that get fixed ? it drove me mad didnt complete the game until years later
@@robblu161 with a poke
Does this bug exist in any other versions of Jet Set Willy? What about the BBC Micro version? Yeah that was a computer, in case you've never heard of it, like everyone else on the planet hasn't.
I remember those. And the Acorn Electron.
Could you do the invincibility and infinite lives and go to the bow of😊 the yacht and jump onto the water and go to the next room ? It should say cheat. I think there's only one room, but it could be 2. Also, could you go to the lowest rooms? it would be good to see them again.
I think this is in Jet Set Willy 2. There are indeed two rooms, the first one is called cheat and the next room is called deserted isle (a room with a small island with two trees on it). You need an invincibility cheat to get to them.
@adrianlindsay7842 think you could reach the island by visiting the trip switch room which is very far away and the returning to the boat without losing a single life
