the thing to keep in mind, Saitama didn't just smash it apart, he did actually completely arrest it's momentum mid air, meaning not only were the pieces falling much smaller, but they were landing with a lot less force. He did absolutely cause the best possible outcome in that situation.
Imagine being someone in another city, you see this news, you have a child or grandchild in that city. The fear you have in your mind, the call with them, the pain that this could be the last time, and then, reports the worst was prevented....the news noone died in that situation. Understanding that because a few good people stood up and saved the day, you weren't saying goodbye after all. I'd wanna know who smashed that meteor. I'd wanna thank them somehow.
Actually no, the "best possible outcome" would be hitting the meteor with enough (distributed) force to either pulverize it entirely or straight up push it all back into space like a bulldozer.
...Both of which we know he *can* do. If you ask me, I've always maintained that this whole incident was poorly written. We *know* he can exert waves of force large and strong enough to either *literally* bulldoze the whole meteor back into space or pulverize it, and yet in this arc he essentially just throws himself through it like a bullet, leaving the whole thing's mass suspended in mid air to break up and rain down on the city for no actually good reason.
This isn't the "Superman can't stop a crashing plane without breaking through it like a bullet" situation, we *KNOW* that Saitama can hit thin air with enough force to effectively generate an invisible colossal wall of pure force easily big and strong enough to take care of it. And that's assuming he only throws *one* punch, while we *know* he could just throw a hundred in an instant.
So yeah, while the people giving him shit in-universe are doing it for entirely different-and-wrong reasons, they're not incorrect in essence; There really *is* no excuse for Saitama to not have solved the problem in a less destructive way, even if the public in-universe don't know it.
@@officiallyjan8596you do realise if he had put enough force in his punch to pulverize the meteor, the ground would also had been destroyed? The meteor was way too close to do that. Genos was right, IF saitama had been called instead of him, he could have saved the city from ANY destruction as you are saying but given the situation, og comment is right, it was the best outcome in that scenario

His semi-serious move is literally exactly that; throwing consecutive spread-out punches, perfect for the meteor.
@@officiallyjan8596 It's hundreds of meters across, and he's hitting it mid-air. You have to remember, even punching once would push all that force back down into you, Newton's third law. After the first punch, you've barely got any speed yourself, it's why he doesn't go flying off into space. Any extra swings would just send him back to the ground.
And also... you have to consider that Saitama also isn't the smartest human alive. He's not perfectly rational, or even particularly smart. He's just some guy. His entire thought process was, "oh, big rock, better punch that to make it go away." Anything past that requires legitimate forethought that I don't think he would have gone out of his way to put in.

We KNOW for a fact that he can throw singular punches with enough force and area of effect to easily cover the size of that meteor and enough force to smash-and-bulldoze it back into space many times over.
My point wasn't that Saitama *would* have thought of it, it was that everyone upset at him *do* have a valid point that the only reason all this destruction happened is because he mishandled the situation and SHOULD have been able to deal with it, and the fact that he didn't think of this obvious solution himself is a personal flaw that he needs to address as a hero, someone who's actions have innocent lives at stake.
But he doesn't, because the author clearly never realized that Saitama could've absolutely solved the entire issue easily but fumbled it completely in almost the worst way possible, and countless people died as a result.
It becomes egregious that the story then *explicitly* had Saitama get called out for failing to do something he should have easily been able to do at the cost of countless lives but he didn't think about it properly and he just renounces any and all failings or responsibility on the meteor as if he couldn't have reasonably avoided getting people killed even though he definitely could have.

I like how this episode brings up the rotten undertone of its hero society. Much like My Hero Academia, because everyone can become a hero, stuff like being selfless and saving lives over possessions take a back seat when compared to rankings and popularity. Saitama is one of the few that acts selflessly, but I do like that he was rather pleased with his jump in rankings XD
Let's be honest, Saitama only care about the ranks because he need to do mandatory hero jobs at rank C.

The damage compared to the whole meteor hitting would be near the same as the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs
It would hit either way, him shattering it just prevented it from hitting as hard as it shouldve, which would wipe out more than just city z, and wipe out all the cities

Lol, all wrong. That meteor is 100-300 meters and is moving at 3 km/s, that's SUPER slow. The meteor that took out the dinos was at least 10000 meters ( 10 km ) in size and was moving 20 km/s. Shattering it will spread out the damage making it worse, like 50 1 megaton nukes can do more damage than 1 50 megaton nuke. Saitama's hit slowed the meteor down alot and that is why the city didn't got blown up.

If you’re talking about the stuff happened in the manga, then Oh yeah it was insane, emotional, and one of my most memorable parts in the whole series as a whole.
This is what separates great storytelling from "modern" comics. Instead of pandering to cancel culture ideologues, they are not afraid of exposing its hypocrisy.

The meteor would be the correct term. The meteorites are the smaller pieces broken off the meteor.

Neel Desai, i agree the meteor seems like a bigger deal, but it wasnt able to extinct humanity. Only around 500m-1km diameter.
Even the massive 10-15 km asteroid that supposedly wiped out the dinosaurs when it hit yucatan, evaporating chalk deposits into gigantic sulfphuric acid clouds and shortly heating the whole athmosphere outside to 200°C, creating extreme forest fires global in the process, then turning into nuclear winter with nearly all crops dying for one or two years and extreme indian dekkan volcanism on top, even that we humans would survive. Or at least 1%, which is enough to repopulate earth. Human extinction is a big deal, we might need at least a 100 km asteroid for that.
Saitama shattered the meteor but that’s a good thing because if we keep the big one hit the ground, the damage is bigger than the meteor after it got shattered

Not really. You got a good look at the thing, the meteor was maybe a couple hundred feet across. The one that is thought to have wiped out the dinosaurs would have been almost 500,000 feet across. There's... a rather significant difference. What was _falling_ was the equivalent of a nuclear bomb. Destructive? Sure. Wiping out all life on Earth? Not even close.
