I was the last person to board one, and my god they look so primitive and creepy compared today

QuasarBarkas I think they, in a way, look creepy because of the windows.

This bring back a lot of memories catching these slam door train unit from London victoria to maidstone to stay at my girlfriend place, carrying my rack sackon my back i almost fell out the door on my way on the train, if only i took my rack sack off my back would make more sense. Happy days.

BR class 309s clacton express were the best slam door trains! They were much faster than southern 3rd rail.

amazing memories of catching these trains in my school days, sitting in first class pretending to be German students unable to understand English then jumping off as the train was still moving through a platform to get away. 🤣

Ah, reminder of happy times visiting my aunt and uncle in Kent in the 60s and 70s and going to the footie in the 80s 😊

Great footage and great memories! Of all the slammers, I disliked the VEPs most. They were cold, noisy, draughty and tired. Traveling home on winter evenings in the rush hour, finally finding a seat and then having to move your bag and newspaper at every station because there was a door next to every seat, and invariably it would be opened to let piles more people clamber on, and the icy cold winter air would blow in with them! And those metal luggage racks scared the hell out of me - would hate to have been on one of these in an accident!

Fabulous video, thanks for sharing with us. I loved VEP's. They had so much character and there was nothing more cosy than to find a corner seat and have a quality sleep on route. I never found them uncomfortable. You've got another thumbs up:-)

Good job they terminated at Victoria after I'd been to the footie and had a couple of pints then fell asleep, or god knows where I'd have ended up!

Been on this type of train many times including the last one ever in March 2005 as part of my day trip to Bournemouth. There were engineering works that day further down the line to Weymouth so that is why trains terminated at Bournemouth from London Waterloo.

I thought the VEPs were the most draughty noisy cramped and uncomfortable trains ever but strangely I miss them for some reason, I cannot for the life of me think why! Nice vid Mr A.

There are a dozen or more very good videos of those wonderful nostalgic 'slam-door' trains, but what a shame that, as far as I can tell, there is not even the sound of a single door slamming. Surely this was what made them so distinctive ... A stranger to these parts wouldn't know why they had that name! Someone must have some video to fill this void?

Ahh connex colours too . The rail company that was so bad they had to rename the whole lot to that of the parent company . Miss the trains though 😀

Thank goodness for the latest German Siemens air condition trains nowadays. Would find these trains unpleasant commuting into work. Looks like a third world carriage to me… why on earth would one design trains with slam doors!
