This is a great song written and performed by Steve Earle. Most people erroneously think that this was written by someone from ireland. Nope it was written by Steve Earle! He's singing about Galway in Ireland where they have darker features. Dark hair and blue eyes are not uncommon in this section of ireland. Hence the name Galway Girl. I've seen some references to other artists, but for my money you can't beat the original
A lot of folk music is shaped by Celtic music traditions (Irish/Scottish) and Steve's work owes to a unique blend of country, folk, and rock. He is certainly a master storyteller!
It’s an album track about a girl he met when he was staying in Galway. Genius songs. It’s huge in Ireland. Everyone covers it. “On a fine soft day” means it’s a bit rainy.
Another song about a Galway girl is “From Galway to Graceland.” About an woman who’s “ silver wings carried her Over the sea From the west coast of Ireland To West Tennessee To be with her sweetheart, Oh she left everything From Galway to Graceland to be with the king.” By the inimitable Richard Thompson, a great singer, songwriter, and guitarist. This guy’s up there with Dylan, in my opinion. Checking out his catalog is like going down the rabbit home. For some reason he’s off the radar of you reaction folk.
You know what I love about watching your vids? I hear of songs I've never heard before, your enjoyment of the songs is infectious and so pure. Thank you beautiful human for putting a smile on my face today ☺
This song is off my favorite Steve Earl album, Transcendental Blues. The entire album incorporates a lot of Celtic sounds that really work with Earl’s style.
I performed this song with some friends for an annual party in a theater. I had not known the song before rehearsing it, but it was fun to see people in the audience who knew every word.
I love that you're listening to Steve Earle! I agree with others about reacting to Guitar Town. You will probably like it. Singing about gigging up and down I-35 in Texas, headed for Austin (Guitar Town). But, a new one of his I really like, is called Champagne Corolla. After his son Justin Townes Earle (a singer in his own right) died by his own hand, Steve made an album covering Justin's songs. That's my favorite one from that album. Blessings to you!
A few years ago, my wife and I had the good fortune of being in Galway on Saint Patrick's Day. The parade was delightful and some group performed Earle's song. That afternoon, we heard it again emanating from a bar or two. Earle has wonderful range regarding the subject matter that he writes about, and as a number of people note below, he is a great story teller. I like his political songs (I also like his politics). If you have watched The Wire or Treme, you have seen him on the screen.
Such a great Irish diddy! It's been covered by numerous famous artists. I really dig the version from the movie P.S. I Love You. Jamel, you should definitely check out The Flogging Molly's "If I Ever Leave This World Alive". Such a great Irish tune from a super talented band! ✌️😍☘️🎶💚
The live performance of this is beautiful. Galway, Ireland. The song was magical because years later it was used in the movie PS I Love You with Gerard Butler, which lead to it being recorded by Irish artist Mundy (with Sharron Shannon again on accordian). Mundy's version was the #1 downloaded song in Ireland in 2008 AND 2009. Check out this live version with thousands of people in Galway. ruclips.net/video/SNs0vKDvs0g/видео.html
Jamel, good catch on the "country/folk feel" of this song. Much of America's musical heritage go back to traditional celtic music, (love) ballads, murder ballads, sea shanty's, etc of Ireland, Scotland, Wales & England, which were brought over by immigrants from these areas to the US; particularly to the Appalachian region of the southeast US. These traditional types of music morphed with other world musical traditions, especially traditional African rhythms and music, to evolve into what we now think of as Folk, Country, Blues, Rock & Roll, Jazz, Soul, etc. It's the great thing about music - it connects people together, as you've found here, with the community you curate on your channel. Keep it up!
There's a city called Galway In West central Ireland on that rugged coast, Was a port town now it's more of a college town. Though Steve Earl is an American , that song is so popular not just here but in Ireland as well. In 2016 I was there touring the country, And in the counties from Dingle, Clare, Galway, Kerry, Cork, And even Dublin.... I would walk around and listen to the music and go to the pubs especially during the music festival during September in Dingle. At any time I walked around there was at least one pub with this song blaring out Of it, And most of the time it was some performer singing the song to a crowd and they were singing with him! They even have this song in that movie PS I love you.
My daughters kids think this song is about her. Ed Sheeren's song is about an entirely different Galway girl with a happier ending to their story & comes with a great video.
Steve Earle is simply awesome. From Guitar Town to I Ain’t Ever Satisfied to Jerusalem. Please check him out more and more. Please. And thanks once again. Saw him at Red Rocks with Keb Mo’ and Jackson Browne in 2003. They first played acoustically in a guitar round , just them. Then Steve Earle started the first band set with Ashes to Ashes. THEN….lightning, thunder and the area transformers blew and the whole Red Rocks venue went dark…except for the emergency generator lights. It was a serious Rock and Roll sign if there ever was. Thanks again brother J
The Devil's Right Hand, Snake Oil, Back to The Wall, Guitar Town, I Ain't Ever Satisfied, Billy Austin, Justice in Ontario, Someday, The Rain Came Down, Dead Flowers, The Other Kind..... I know I forgot a few, but these are all great songs from his early years that you should consider givin' a spin. You'll be glad you did. Peace. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Irish and English traditional music was brought over to America where it evolved into bluegrass, folk, country and combined with other immigrant sounds. I will suggest the Irish group the Corrs version of Fleetwood Mac’s song “Dreams “. One of the best covers of that song. They mix traditional Irish instruments with enough regular to give it a great sound. Three sisters and a brother who are just too good looking. Great harmonies. Andrea and Bono of U2 did a nice duet version of “Summer Wine 🍷. They had a great song writing sense though usually from a female perspective.
Jamel, thanks for doing this as it's such a great sing along tune. If you get the chance you should do "Gulf of Mexico" it's a great song about generational family fisherman in the Gulf. Yes Steve is a master storyteller and has so many great tunes.
my first introduction to this song was from Stewart Lee, my 2nd favourite stand up comedian ever (after Norm), he finished a special with a version of this, was actually very good check out the band Flogging Molly, Jamel, I definitely think you'd dance to them too!
An early influence of Steve Earle is Townes Van Zant. Countless great performers have recorded Van Zant's songs, perhaps none more recorded than "Pancho & Lefty." Earlier you mentioned how you like the storytelling aspect of Country songs; Townes was a master at evoking strong emotions (mostly melancholy) and imagery. Van Zant's own life story is HEARTBREAKING.
A lot of immigrants from Scotland, Ireland and England settled in the Appalachian Mountains & brought with them traditional folk music that morphed into American country & folk music.
Earle went from rock like Copperhead road to celtic songs like Galway girl, about a town in Ireland I believe. Then Steve went pretty much folk. Strange career
Wow! Thanks for playing this. I just got back from Ireland, including two days in Galway. I kinda know Steve's ex who also signed Guns n Roses to their first record deal. This is Irish music! Check out Whiskey in the Jar! I prefer the Jerry Garcia/David Grisman version, but you might like Metallica's or Thin Lizzie's.
If you're looking for another Steve Earle tune, I promise that you'll be moved by "Jerusalem". Go for the studio version or be prepared for a 5 minute preamble that you may not want in your video review (but still worth hearing for you own sake).
I would also welcome seeing some Justin Townes Earle here. So many good songs to choose from. Harlem River Blues is a personal favorite, but certainly do not want to take away from the suggestion above.
I remember reading a long time ago in an article somewhere that the idea of a “Galway Girl” is a reference to the unique beauty of many women who come from the Galway region of Ireland. I took it with a grain of salt, but they spoke about the ancestry of the area and how many of the women in the region look different than the women in the rest of the country. They mentioned history of frequent shipwrecks of European (mostly Spanish) vessels and the survivors that stayed assimilated into the society and over hundreds of years their ancestors were not always, but often fair skinned with light eyes and dark haired. This gave them a very unique beauty when compared to the traditional blonde, light brown and red hair that was common to the region. Anyways, it could all be total BS but always thought the historical discussion of the song meaning was interesting.
I’ve been to Ireland. If you can’t imagine hearing a song you adore ending up being something you don’t need to hear again for years due to overplay, go there. Every bar, street musician, every drunken lass was wailing this out. It’s a grand song, and I love it. But I haven’t made a point of listening to it in years.
interesting song, I have a suggestion for you, Billy Falcon.. Pretty Blue World(1991). all the songs are great, my fav order is: "Still Got A Prayer", "Heaven's Highest Hill", "Pretty Blue World"...All are great
brother jamal this is the best bleep around and why i was dropping as much duckets as this fired fool could ur wya today keep at my brother thanks - SJOCR
Galway is in Ireland. The arrangement and instruments used for this song reflect that. Steve Earle has a weak spot for the ladies. He has been married a bunch of times. Peace Jamel
Galway is area many Irish immigrants came from. They were starved out of their own country and looked west to escape but their hearts never left Ireland. Galway is on the West Coast of Ireland.
Just a FYI Jamel, I didn't receive notice of this video. I found you though😀. Also, Steve Earle was in an old HBO series called Treme. It was really good! Lots of music and of course it took place in New Orleans so you know it was good.

Hey brother. I really enjoy your reactions to music. Do one with the Gear Daddy's. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
Galway is a City on the west Coast of Ireland Steve has Played here quite often
I always assumed it was her last name.
Written by a Texas songwriter, and one of the most popular songs in Ireland - especially in Galway!
It’s Celtic(Keltic)Irish version . Copperhead Road was a nod to the Scotch Irish make up of Appalachia.
Galway is on the West Irish Coast.
A lot of folk music is shaped by Celtic music traditions (Irish/Scottish) and Steve's work owes to a unique blend of country, folk, and rock. He is certainly a master storyteller!
Galway is a town in Ireland
The song basically talks about the narrator falling in love with an Irish girl.
I’m in Texas and I married a Galway girl. Been there a few times. It’s beautiful.
Galway is a small city in Ireland. I got to go visit it two years back. There really are a lot of cute girls there.
It’s an album track about a girl he met when he was staying in Galway. Genius songs. It’s huge in Ireland. Everyone covers it. “On a fine soft day” means it’s a bit rainy.
Nanci Griffith is another Texas songwriter with ties to Ireland. Check out "From Claire to Here".
Another song about a Galway girl is “From Galway to Graceland.” About an woman who’s “ silver wings carried her
Over the sea
From the west coast of Ireland
To West Tennessee
To be with her sweetheart,
Oh she left everything
From Galway to Graceland to be with the king.”
By the inimitable Richard Thompson, a great singer, songwriter, and guitarist.
This guy’s up there with Dylan, in my opinion.
Checking out his catalog is like going down the rabbit home.
For some reason he’s off the radar of you reaction folk.
There are vids of this song played in Galway and crowds linedancing. Like John Prine, Steve Earle has a huge Irish following.
Steve Earle also recorded a song with The Pogues, should check it out --
Steve Earle & The Pogues ~ Johnny Come Lately
.
You know what I love about watching your vids? I hear of songs I've never heard before, your enjoyment of the songs is infectious and so pure. Thank you beautiful human for putting a smile on my face today ☺
I have purchased every Album of his.
I've been a lover of his lyrics & Music since the late 1980s...
His “Week of Living Dangerously” tells quite a story.
One of the greatest living songwriters
Devils right hand, and Guitar town are great tracks as well
I went to Ireland years ago, every pub has a singer like this, was absolutely brilliant 👏 ❤ x
This song is off my favorite Steve Earl album, Transcendental Blues. The entire album incorporates a lot of Celtic sounds that really work with Earl’s style.
I would suggest to Jamal the song, “Transcendental Blues”, now that you mention it.
I performed this song with some friends for an annual party in a theater. I had not known the song before rehearsing it, but it was fun to see people in the audience who knew every word.
The great Steve Earle. Close the prisons, house the people, food and Medicare for all, Peace and harmony y'all!
This is an old folk song. It's fun to occasionally listen to old pre 1950's music to hear where it all came from.

I love both of those songs too! RIP Justin
Galway city in ireland, this song has become an anthem for us Irish girls. Having married a Galway man my daughters are Galway girls. Love this song.
It's a City in Ireland: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galway
Try The Saw Doctors - one of Ireland’s most beloved bands. I was told Bono isn’t fit to tie their shoes! Try Claire Island, Catriona Tells Lies.
YEEEE hawwwwwww Scot here, supporting my Irish sisters in brothers, unionist or republican, in these dark times. UNITE Slainte!

Galway is a city on the west coast of Ireland. It is reputed to contain a large number of Spanish looking Irish. Beautiful women
"Snake Oil" is another fun, upbeat song by Steve. Another good one is "You Belong To Me".
💙☮💙
Now we're talking! Great reaction! Another suggestion, Lawyers, Guns, and Money-Warren Zevon

Galway is a city in Ireland. This song is performed in one of my favorite movies P.S. I Love You.

Check out Steve's song Feel Alright. Featured in the show The Wire where Steve played ex junkie Walon.
He also did a version of the "way down in the hole" theme tune for one of the seasons of the wire :)
A lot of immigrants from Scotland, Ireland and England settled in the Appalachian Mountains & brought with them traditional folk music that morphed into American country & folk music.

Galway is a city west or Ireland. Great song choice! Thanks Jamel!
I was doing the exact same thing when I was listening to it. It's such a fun song.
Galway is a city in Ireland and the music has an Irish sound to it.You should listen to the Mountain.
How about some Dropkick Murphys my friend?
Wow! Thanks for playing this. I just got back from Ireland, including two days in Galway. I kinda know Steve's ex who also signed Guns n Roses to their first record deal. This is Irish music! Sometimes it takes a Texas boy to write a classic Irish song.
If you're looking for another Steve Earle tune, I promise that you'll be moved by "Jerusalem".
Go for the studio version or be prepared for a 5 minute preamble that you may not want in your video review (but still worth hearing for you own sake).
You should check out his son Justin Townes Earle, who died a few years ago. An accomplished singer/songwriter. Try “Am I That Lonely Tonight?”
I would also welcome seeing some Justin Townes Earle here. So many good songs to choose from. Harlem River Blues is a personal favorite, but certainly do not want to take away from the suggestion above.
Justin was great, saw him live twice. RIP.
@@neilford8580 I saw him only a few years before his death with the Sadies as his backing band. Hard to believe Dallas Good is gone, too.
A trivial factoid, his son was named after Townes Van Zandt
Galway is a town in Ireland. The girl in the song is from Galway.
hope you do more of Steve.
Love this song.
