Hey thank you for great analysis I agree. Yes the 3 is important in todays age but the foundation is still scoring inside and mid range it’s just now you can’t completely neglect the 3 ball now more than ever I think it’s 50/50 as far the 3ball and inside/midrange
The Chicago Bulls have this exact issue. I watched some of their games and realised they actually shoot the ball well, it's just that most of their shots come from the mid-range I.e. DeRozan, Lavine etc
Yes...the solution is to be more efficient. The three isn't going away. The next evolution is efficiency. Still too many bad threes are being taken. Making a good midrange two instead of taking and missing a bad three bad three is the next leap for offenses.
@@axucaroso -- People got played. They believed the Warriors were winning because they took a ton of 3s. They failed to realize the Warriors were winning with 2 of the best 3 pt shooters of all time taking all those 3s. Bad shooters weren't taking 3s on the Warriors. Remember Draymond's blowup with Steve Kerr in the locker room of that OKC classic regular season game? It was about Green taking a 3 when he could of moved the ball for a better shot because Green taking the 3 wasn't considered a good shot. Who are taking the shots should matter but bad teams just understood the basics. Taking more 3s good more 2s bad.
@@axucaroso this is almost certainly not true from a long range perspective. Shooting 36% from 3 is equivalent to shooting 55% from mid range (mid you, even some of the most elite mid range shooters don’t shoot 55% from there)
@Matthew Washington none of the "elite" mid range shooters shoot 55 percent. I don't know exact percentages so I may be wrong but I think the top mid range shooters shoot about 45 percent from mid range. So that's equivalent to 30% from 3.
James Harden really doesn’t get enough credit for changing basketball, both in the literal sense of having rules changed because of him and in the more general sense of solidifying analytics in the sport.
What exactly did Harden “change”? Flopping and throwing ya body around, and throwing ya hands in the air when a nigga breathe on you isn’t changing anything.
The three point shot is a good framework but the difference comes down to a killer midrange and inside game. If three point variance is considered a slight advantage for one team to a wash, it comes down to defense and inside 15 feet. Last year, Steph, Klay, and Wiggins capitalized on opportunities elbow in, versus the Celtics who did not down the stretch. Same is true for champions down the list: Bucks (Giannis), Lakers (LeBron/AD), Raptors (Kawhi), Cavs (LeBron, Kyrie...ish), Warriors (KD, Livingston (haha)), Spurs (Kawhi). It always comes down to it because of the halfcourt nature of playoff basketball. Most playoff teams run plays for their one, two, and three option for motions/isolations into the elbow and post, i.e., Clippers, Sixers, Nuggets, Lakers, Bucks, Mavericks, and Suns. Only team that doesn't really have it is Celtics. Personally, I'd want to see them implement midrange and post isolation opportunities for Jaylen Brown because he has a noticeable tendency to turn the ball over when he creates from the free throw line extended late in games when defenses lock in. It's either that or Tatum needs to make a big leap for opportunities 15 ft in during the playoffs.

Everyone credits Curry for the 3 point era but I believe he is the Jordan of the 3 point pioneering he POPULARIZED it but Harden and Mike’s Rockets were Larry Bird and Magic. They changed the game.
What? The Warriors had the 2 best shooters in the league, they didnt just popularize it they were the best at it. Hard to say the team that never even made the finals is the team that "changed the game". Someone in the comment section said it best - Dantoni introduced it, curry proved it could equate to championships, rockets pushed it to irrational levels.
People don’t understand this just look at so many offenses today they not playing that constant ball movement till you find a cutter or open three point shooter. They letting some iso like Gianni’s and Luka do then kick out to there shooters.
born and the bay and a warriors fan for life but from what i saw, the warriors dynasty wasn’t just because they themselves and steph curry innovated the game, they took aspects from the big 3 heat, dantonis offense, and the 2014 spurs, and the rockets built off of them and it was a collective of all these factors that created the nba we see today
In this generation of this 3pt evolution JJ you can easily score avg a good 25/30ppg easily!!!! 💯 Let’s not forget you are one the best shooters of all time to play at the highest level even if you never won a ring or became a hall of famer it’s never too you could easily come off the bench on a sturdy set championship contender team n can completely change that entire narrative.
@Recypher AMV never said he was ans that's probably about what he would be averaging probably rn is 18 or 16 a game but most of the time for his career he'd prolly average about 15 16
Don't be daft. Easily 25/30 PPG? Maybe if some team decided to play out an experiment and give him the ball all game, but why would that happen? There are current All NBA players that have maybe just done this once or twice, or not at all.
It is the same at good parks now. You can’t win unless you shoot 3s. When the defense gets too strong, they just start shooting further and further back.
Wow, great video! Huge fan but really a basketball junkie and this video was very informative. I am a 90s guy and the era of MJ. I am realizing the revolution I have seen in bball with the 3 and this video explained it perfectly, thanks.
This is exactly what I try to explain to people about comparing 90s basketball to present day basketball.. 3 is more than 2 no matter how efficient the 2s are
Remember, you gotta shoot above 33% from 3pt to beat a 50% interior shot. Teams shooting 40% from 3 just ain't going to get that efficiency with their 2s, and they're better for it.
It’s crazy when you think about how much the 3pt has changed the game. Just yesterday I was playing some one v one with a friend and I was more or less cooking him. All of the sudden he makes 3 3pt shots and ties the game. But only is the shot a plus one every time you make it, it’s also less time consuming compared to driving, crazy footwork and laying it up. I like taking long range shots, but if it’s regular it kinda takes away the fun for me personally. I think it’s ultimately gonna come down to team that knows how ti defend the shooters better
I am al Rockets fan, of that team, and I remember that when GSW won 4-2 they made a lot of 2s especially in clutch times. They didn't go for 3s they went for 2s
Just a respectful question. As many threes as these teams shoot and allat. The championship teams always take the best shot. Which includes midrange. I believe the game is twisted when its like “shoot alotta threes,” but honestly, the championship teams always take the best shot. The Rockets, and Dantoni changed the game, and were winners. But not at the highest point of winning
The leagues and associations need to widen the courts and make the 3pt line about 3 feet longer, bring back the handcheck and Make Basketball Great Again MBGA cause this last 10-15 just ain't it. Frfr I grew up watching hoops now I'm watching soccer with the kids 😅
The funniest thing about the 3pt revolution is despite all the advanced stats, analytics, and strategy, every conversation has to mention that 3 is in fact greater than 2.
Because it took 25+ years to internalise that fact and apply it to game. Why were people still spamming middies back in the 2000's? If 3 is in fact greater than 2 and all that
i had a funny discussion with someone who called steph currys 45% from 3 a low percentage shot, he couldnt believe when i explained to him that 10 shots from 3 45% are more than 51% from mid range shot 2's..
Harden at one time was considered the greatest scorer ever. Among MJ, KD, etc. His iso ball was unstoppable and he pretty much pioneered the step back 3
I'd still really like to see a team that is 4 fast, tall 3-point capable people on the floor, and then a prime Shaq or prime Wilt. Prime Shaq doing 65% down low against big dudes in a crowded lane is for sure doing 75%+ when the rest of the league has nobody comparable and are forced to spread out. The math works in that situation. Spread the floor, then have a super-dominant person that you definitely cannot have single coverage against would create havoc, I bet. But, then that'd probably also cause a shift in drafting priorities. I don't necessarily think today's game is done evolving and may swing back and forth between current and former styles of play.
does anybody actually talk about the orlando magic when it comes to the 3 point revolution ?? Lmao genuinely curious because this is the first I’ve ever heard it mentioned in the same sentence
All due respect JJ, no one talks about those Orlando teams being a fast paced team like that. No one really talks about those Orlando teams at all to be honest.
The 1995 Rockets Championship team is the 1st team to be a true 3 point shooting team in the NBA history. The far difference is Rockets had that Beast Olajuwon in the middle. Double team The Dream? Then kick it out to Robert Horry (stretch 4) Mario Elie, Sam Cassell, Vernon Maxwell, Kenny Smith, Matt Bullard, and not to mention Clyde Drexler SPLASH SPLASH SPLASH 🌊☄️💧🔥🚀
But if you shoot 60% two's it's still more valuable than 30% threes. Coaches don't like Gobert or Allen shooting 70% from two's is still crazy to me, simple math. Got to mix it up but i never understood why coaches don't encourage centers on a roll to put up more than 6-8 attempts a night when it's clearly a weakness for the opposition, would also benefit three point shooters. If two point shooters benefits from the threat of three's than it would be more valuable to do the opposite.
Difference is the guys in that 65% plus range are lob guys or the ones who get easy buckets. Every post guy or guy that is putting it on the floor at max is shooting 55% the cream of the crop of those guys are the Shaqs and Zions. The difference is those lob guys who shoot 70% are on good 3pt shooting teams because the 3 opens up for those higher percentage looks.
Of course I never want to see the Splash Brothers breakup but I always wondered what Klay Thompson would have looked like on a D'antoni coached team 🤔 just catch and shoot all night long
My only complaint really is that it took the old skool bigs out of the game. There is less to watch because everyone from two through four are the same guy, with ones and fives being different builds but also having same game.
Too bad D'Antoni never put any emphasis on defense like Steve Kerr. He could have a couple of chips right now. That 05 suns team was one of the most exciting teams I've ever watched.

@Sir Hoopalot steph hasn't won the last 3 right I meant to say raptors lakers and bucks weren't the greatest shooting teams they could make em but they play inside
The 3pt problem is just a basketball rules problem. Why would you make the easiest to get off shot in basketball worth more points? Sure it might be harder to make but it's also the shot hardest to defend because your not going at the defence. All that happened was people figured that out.
I get the math. But as a fan of basketball, it's REALLY hard to watch. To the point I stopped even thinking about buying tickets to watch teams. Between all the 3 point shots taken and max players taking many nights off, it's A) not nearly as fun to watch anymore and B) too much of a risk to shell out can when there's a high probability the team you wanted to see wouldn't be there at tip off. Prices to games are based on who's on the team. But if it's not anywhere close to a sure bet the players show up, those higher ticket prices are no longer worth that price. Tickets should sell at a fraction of today's pricing if you look at the actual received value of these tickets
As a Bulls fan, this is the #1 reason we lose. We have had a top 5 defense (first in the league at times) and would score 60% from the field and still lose. Why? We took 22 3's to their 35. Ignore the rebounds and turnovers, what team scoring on 55-60% of their shots should be losing? Especially to double digits??? I don't like this chucker era, but it is what it is.

Indeed
Dame is blessed, because his skill set was perfect for the evolving game. averaging 6 threes his rookie season is crazy...

I like that the fact dame is being vocal nowadays!!!
Media and nba not gonna like this. Dame got a strong voice that open up more ideas and narrative control
I’m a rockets fan and Houston native but when the GM said they were going to lay like GSW they never took into account the off ball screens. Especially Harden. When it was clear harden was the man and Jermy Lin left and DH came, Harden didn’t do any off ball movement or screens.
3 is more than 2. If you can shoot it efficiently, you'll always give yourself a chance to win.
3 has more variance than the 2. Midrange making a come back.
Dame is clearly a good student of the game. I hope he gets a couple chips
"couple," one might not be possible.

until someones stops it and shows you can win multiple titles without playing that way every organization is going to allow it.. warriors 6 out of 10 years in the finals and 4 out 6 titles is the reason.. organizations that want success are going with "what works" somebody gotta prove them wrong that doesnt play that way.. cant say bosten they play like warriors, cant say memphis, cant say most teams.. denver and dallas play like cavs from 2016 with relying on one star to do everything but we see how far they go, its gonna take cleveland that plays like 2019 raptors or philly that plays like a modern 2002 lakers, everyone else is a high 3 point shooting team
Bro, whenever I watch teams get a 3-4 on 1-2 fast break and immediately park at the elbow or corner to shoot that three...this is what the game has become. Don't even mention what pick up games have become, lmao.

Everyone credits Curry for the 3 point era but I believe he is the Jordan of the 3 point pioneering he POPULARIZED it but Harden and Mike’s Rockets were Larry Bird and Magic. They changed the game.
Huh? The Rockets played like that to beat Gs, that wasn’t their game! Wym!
It’s not really like the rockets were first tho? They both started breaking out around 2014/2015
People don’t understand this just look at so many offenses today they not playing that constant ball movement till you find a cutter or open three point shooter. They letting some iso like Gianni’s and Luka do then kick out to there shooters.
The Houston rockets were reacting to what the warriors were already doing. They took it to the extreme imo
It’s so intriguing watching this podcast as a person who suffers from BGCPBB.
born and the bay and a warriors fan for life but from what i saw, the warriors dynasty wasn’t just because they themselves and steph curry innovated the game, they took aspects from the big 3 heat, dantonis offense, and the 2014 spurs, and the rockets built off of them and it was a collective of all these factors that created the nba we see today
Great as usual👍🏾
In this generation of this 3pt evolution JJ you can easily score avg a good 25/30ppg easily!!!! 💯 Let’s not forget you are one the best shooters of all time to play at the highest level even if you never won a ring or became a hall of famer it’s never too you could easily come off the bench on a sturdy set championship contender team n can completely change that entire narrative.
Hell no he'd average 14 probably
@@vincentvega9747 JJ have had season where he got 16, 17, 18 ppg, he for sure can get to 20-24, he was no scrub.
Are you crazy? 25 and 30 ppg? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAA
It is the same at good parks now. You can’t win unless you shoot 3s. When the defense gets too strong, they just start shooting further and further back.
What brand is that hoodie JJ's wearing at the end of the vid? Dog/puppy logo?
The only other option would be to devise a new system of offense that changes the paradigm. Which is no easy task.
It’s not only about taking more threes, it about who’s taking the shots.
If 3 is in fact greater than 2 and all that
the need the rule to help the defense with elimiting the 3 second rule & bring back hand checking
He know he can’t give Curry too much credit.
I never thought of it that way I guess it do make sense to stop shooting 2’s then
Fast-paced offense started with Paul Westphal
i had a funny discussion with someone who called steph currys 45% from 3 a low percentage shot, he couldnt believe when i explained to him that 10 shots from 3 45% are more than 51% from mid range shot 2's..
We need a 3/4/5 pt system.
dafuq no. 4 i can agree but hell no on 5.
Stupidity
Video game Dame. Logo Lillard. Dame Dolla. I feel like anyone that’s watched him is at least kinda rooting for him to win a title at some point
That Rockets with Cp3, Harden we’re just insanely good. How Warriors beat them I don’t know and OKC with Russ & KD wow dude.
Hamsting injury and Refs
bc it’s the warriors and the league clearly wanted them to win 😂
What about just defending the three better by committing on the defensive end ? I get following the trends but just a thought
To that point Golden State should give D’Antoni a thank you note . Because if you watch they are running a version of his system.
Harden at one time was considered the greatest scorer ever. Among MJ, KD, etc. His iso ball was unstoppable and he pretty much pioneered the step back 3
When you can consistently shoot the 3 you’ll always be in the game
I’m mad nobody ask dame about his dunking skills. He was in the dunk contest but everyone forgets lol
Imo the iso scoring wasn't good for basketball. No off ball movement. Just standing waiting for the kick
great defense mskes the 2 ball more valuable…dame and trailblazers aren’t defensive minded
Milwaukee Bucks nd the La Lakers, recent NBA champions, won without relying heavily on the 3 ball.
It really depends if you have an extremely good person that can drive and post up
I feel like if they bring back hand checks that will stop a lot of the easy three point shots
Ifeel like maybe playing some fuckin defense might be the key to winning in any way

Yeah, but the league could change the way the game is officiated. This is a result of not being able to touch anybody as a defender.
I don’t think it necessarily about shooting the 3. I think it’s more about being able to defend it.
The 3pt problem is just a basketball rules problem. Why would you make the easiest to get off shot in basketball worth more points? Sure it might be harder to make but it's also the shot hardest to defend because your not going at the defence. All that happened was people figured that out.
I hate dudes taking 3s on fast breaks. It’s crazy that dudes take 3s on fast breaks now.
Whole League And The Three
As a Bulls fan, this is the #1 reason we lose.
People and the media dont give the Rockets a lot of credit for revolutionizing and pioneering a new system in the modern NBA. History will
