I saved most of the masks that I wore so far during COVID19. I washed and dried them with the laundry. Today, I made a 20x20 throw pillow and used the cut up masks as stuffing! Worked great !!! It is a wonderful feeling to have made good use out of these masks and to not have sent them to the trash.
I remove the metal strip and ear bands before disposing of a used mask. I sanitize the metal strip and ear band and use them as tags to organize wires, lock food item packets for storage and for various other things. It is very useful.
I would love to do this in Nashville, with a wood shortage and if you could make composite decking I would replace the top of my deck and the hand rails with this ... this might be the key and if you could make shingles this would be the perfect material for roofing a tiny home...

if you implement UV-C into the progress you can make it pretty safe. and if you have them in storage for a while you eliminate a lot of the hazards too.
Cdc has said now that disposable masks can be reworn! Boiling or using water/soap compromises the filter, so they are to be put in a paper bag for 72 hours at least and then they can be reworn. Since these do not need functional filters, boiling and/or using soap or bleach or something would work, probably would be overkill even
It's technically possible but basically no. It's so difficult that it basically isn't done. At one Point precious plastic lied and pretended like they had made filament but it was completely unusable. I don't think we're going to have recycling connected to 3D printing until they start building more robust 3D printers that can use lower grade plastic. But that's just me. Most people in the 3D printing Community are concerned with detail and ease-of-use. So unfortunately even the little guys prefer to use new virgin plastic rather than the hard work and expense of reusing old stuff.
Theoretically poly propylene would be almost best choice for extruding filament instead of other recyclable plastics. But purity of the pp , filament thickness accuracy and even humidity in the production phase , seriously affects the quality of the filament. But anyways it is still worth to try with filament extruders. Low budget filaments might be of interest to most people.
Also there Is a 3d printer nozzle that prints directly from pellets (even recycled shreds). I Cannot Remember the name now but i think It was mentioned in the CNC kitchen video

Yep, the little dots are where they melt together. What will really blow your mind is that all polyester clothing is plastic. Poly = Polymer. That's actually where real microplastics in the oceans comes from. From doing our laundry.

1. The virus would die down after time anyways if there was. I believe i read something that on plastic it takes 3 days for corona to uh "die" if that is the correct word? Basically for it to be safe again. But the heat definitely should be able just in case since the fabric masks are recommended to wash at i think 40 -60°c to kill bacteria and viruses. I'm not a professional or scientist or what ever so of course i could still be wrong somewhere somehow but i would just straight say: there would not be any viruses etc left after. Else our bottles etc we drink and eat from would easily make us sick as 100 of people would have spread their illnesses on them before they got to us as they usually are also just recycled

This will be a mistake, those masks lack the proper UV stabilizers and anti oxidants copolymers, and sun will eat it pretty quick creating leaks.
You could have a Blue Sky on your frequent rainy days while under that roof!
Not sure if its good for plastics to be heated under the sun.

I think the heat alone is enough to sterilize these masks. The melting point of polypropylene is 160C.

These masks didn't reach the end of the production line, meaning, those remain unused throughout the time.

I don't think so, because it would contaminate a whole batch of PP that someone will want to recycle in the future.

check the triangle sign with the arrows inside the lid. the number in it corresponds to a material.
