Very informative. I swear I read "How to play Hanafuda Kawaii Style Complete Instructions" as the title, but I guess that, too, applies haha.

Ahhhh thank you for such great instructions! I loved the animation! I use to play this game when I was a kid in Hawaii and I forgot how to play it! Thank you! 😁

Thank you. I haven't played this in a very long time and wanted to learn to play again. This was so helpful

Thank you, very helpful. Also looks like it could get complex in game play, as I played card games in the 90's but this game looks very unique. What lead me here is the controversy, over a set of earrings. In the Anime show Demon Slayer that came out in 2019 I believe, and all that rising sun history. Little that the west understood, they're simply cards as earrings.

At 6:09 you should have closed the fan, so that frog's stacked cards don't fly off

Having a lot of fun playing Hanafuda with the family! Thanks to this video we learned very quick. We have some doubts about the Hikki rule. Can you play a Hikki anytime during the game?

When you play the Gaji card as a wild card to take one of a Hiki, there are three cards left, so the Gaji card player takes the odd card left over. But now there is an odd 5 point Willow card leftover as well. Who, if any, takes that 5 point card at the end of the game? My family plays that the player with a Willow pair takes it, but it could also be left on the field or the gaji player could be rewarded that point card as well.

It’s going to depend on the house. You can make as many variations as you want really

If you get a Hiki, do you take the cards and keep them in your hand, lay them down, or play with them? Is there any points?

Thanks for this video. We call this variation of hanafuda, "higobana". The August suit is actually, "susuki"芒, not "suzuki".

I googled what Hanafuda means and that is how I got here. Also I misread the title to say "kawaii" instead of "hawaii" lol.

i wouldn’t simply discard the valueless cards because there is a yaku when you pull lots of them or have a total score of under 15

      That’s only for regular Koi-Koi

Remember, speaking of sets in Hanafuda, you only need 2 cards, including the Chrynthasenum Seed (September) card to complete the Cherry-Blossom Viewing or Moon Viewing sets. I your opponent snags one, watch out!

-50 points per yaku seems very harsh if you're playing with more people and the most you can make from a set is 30 points. Seems like you'll be in the negative at the end of most games.

    • @UmeSama2080

That’s why you want to try to block your opponent from getting a yaku

Looks like Nintendo loosened up to people showing gameplay of their games on RUclips

Oh right, Hanafuda was Nintendo's first product before going to toys and video games

Nintendo didn't invent hanafuda cards, they just manufactured them and still do. I collect decks with many variations on the standard designs. These folks designed two of the most beautiful. A new Hawaiian style of game play arose among Japanese immigrants to Hawaii.
