    In the 2008 Hulk movie, it was stated that Bruce’s blood is incredibly toxic and even a drop can kill a normal human being. That’s why Bruce was trying to keep Jen away from his blood while she had open wounds.

    Point of order! (chronological order, that is...) She-Hulk was breaking the fourth wall in the comics BEFORE Deadpool did. She-Hulk #3 (1989): "You readers will probably find out on the next page!" Deadpool did first appear in New Mutants #98 (1983), six years prior to She-Hulk. However, his first solo comic wasn't until 1994, five years after She-Hulk. More importantly, he didn't break the fourth wall until Deadpool #28 in 1997, by Joe Kelly and Pete Woods, eight years after She-Hulk first did. And it didn't become a regular feature of Deadpool until his comic run by Joe Kelly and Ed McGuinness, which started in 2016, 27 years after She-Hulk did it. (She-Hulk was the last main character created by Stan Lee before he left the publishing side of Marvel Entertainment.)

      The thing I've always wondered is since She-Hulk gets exponentially stronger if Jen trains and gets stronger, doesn't that mean there's a theoretical limit to how strong She-Hulk can get (forgetting for a minute that there now isn't, as she's been powered up and is physically most likely the strongest female hero in the Marvel universe)? Like as a regular human Jen can only get so strong and develop so much muscle. So shouldn't (pre powerup) She Hulk essentially only be able to get exponentially stronger than Jen's strongest? Obviously this assumes non anger She Hulk.

  • @tofu_golem
    @tofu_golem 2 года назад +23

    About the diversity issue from the comic book side of things:
    No one should think that ONLY people of the same demographic can write a comic book character, but in Marvel comics, some pretty magical things have happened when a comic book was turned over to a writer of the same demographic.
    For example, back when Carol Danvers was Ms. Marvel, sidekick of Captain Marvel, there was a super creepy story in which she was brainwashed into marrying someone, and none of the other heroes acted like this was a big deal. Chris Claremont, then writer of the X-Men, became enraged by this, and so he brought the character in to the X-Men comics, and made her much more powerful, while also wiping her memory in order to completely retcon the whole rape-marriage story. These stories made her one of the biggest heavy hitters among Marvel heroes and also brought a lot of pathos to the character's story and character development. The character wouldn't be where she is without a male writer getting angry about that creepy rape-marriage story, but when a female writer took over the comic book, she brought it to a whole new level and turned her into a female empowerment icon.
    In the early days of Black Panther, white writers did good and interesting things. Stan Lee introduced black futurism to a white audience before the term "black futurism" was even coined. But it was when a black writer named Christopher Priest took over that the modern Black Panther took shape, especially the Dora Milaje and some of the "James Bond" elements of the character.
    And sadly, the Kamala Khan comics petered out when they turned over the writing to someone less familiar with Pakistani-Americans because a big part of what makes that story work is Kamala trying to navigate between her parents' culture and American culture.
    Lastly, when you're doing a movie or a TV show, there are going to be multiple writers, in which case you need at least some people from that demographic just to act as a safety valve in case the other writers want to do something that just doesn't work or that would anger the parts of the audience that share that demographic.

    I enjoyed the first episode, had some good humor and am excited to see more of the slice of life aspect of being a superhero and one that doesnt necessarily want to be a superhero. The only thing that felt out of place to me was her talk with hulk when he was trying to help her. think Jens speech about her experience as a woman is very valid & important and needs to be said but I think in context, her saying it to hulk specifically and saying that she can control her anger better and “infinitely” more than him doesn’t land as well as it couldve. Bruce has experienced a lot as a result of being a hulk. Such as the loss he’s gone through, the past 10+ years of fighting between two beings internally, fighting for the sake of humanity and saving the universe, losing the woman he loved and a friend in Tony Stark, and all the mental issues & suicidal thoughts he’s experienced throughout all of this because hes a hulk. Hulk is coming from a place of trying to help not only another hulk but it’s own his own family. Also she was about to hulk out and beat the crap out of the 4 dudes at the bar so his training is needed to help her. I think her having that speech should have been with another person.

    Just a point, Bruce was more susceptible to raging out because he has DID caused by being abused by his father as a child, like Moon Knight his alters took on different personalities, which are the different kinds of Hulks. Jennifer has a smaller gamma dose and no alters which allows her much more refined control, but the comics have shown her losing control before, and she gets stronger if she absorbs more radiation.

  • @tofu_golem
    @tofu_golem 2 года назад +6

    I'm half Japanese, and I've been eating junk food with chopsticks pretty much my whole life for exactly the reason Jen does.
    Comic book lore: you can get superpowers from Hulk's blood, but it depends on your genes, and depending on your genes, you could get completely different superpowers. Jen is his cousin, so her powers are pretty similar to his. The villain The Leader got enhanced intelligence instead of enhanced strength, for example. Bruce Banner's psychiatrist dr Samson got a weaker version of Hulk's powers and long green hair (but not green skin). Doc Samson is like Jen in that he thinks of himself as a psychiatrist and denies being a superhero at all even though the superhero world keeps sucking him in.
    This episode really made me want to see Totally Awesome Hulk, because that is all about a very smart brother-sister pair bickering constantly. You could save money on CGI just by showing things from the sister's point of view, and keep everyone entertained with the constant bickering.
    I agree completely. I'm starting to like the shows more than the movies. We get a lot more story, a lot more character development, and each show feels very different from the others.
    Explanation about why Jen can control her transformations: Originally, she transformed when she got angry just like Bruce, but this led to people making a lot of really sexist PMS jokes, so they just gave her conscious control over her transformations. Like Bruce, she does get stronger and bigger the angrier she is.
    I'm glad that they addressed a number of things women have to deal with. The comic book skirts a fine line between being sexy/sex-positive, while also criticizing the sexualized portrayal of women in popular media. I'm pretty sure the She-Hulk comic was the first time in popular media that anyone portrayed a muscular woman as sexy.
    And please don't complain about She-Hulk being overt with feminist complaints. She's famous for breaking the fourth wall to *criticize the audience* (very Andy Kaufman-esque) for buying more comic books when there are more sexualized images of women in those comic books (she also breaks the 4th wall to criticize Marvel editors over this). Being very blunt and direct about women's issues is very much in line with the source material.
    If they follow the stories from the comic books, she will eventually get angry enough to really lose control and get really big muscles.
    By the way, Bruce Banner has dissociative identity disorder like Moon Knight. He just has fewer personalities. Hulk has superpowers, Bruce Banner doesn't (at least until those two personalities merged). There is a third personality that both Banner and Hulk hate more than they hate each other. He's not as strong as the Hulk, but is really strong, not as smart as Banner but really smart. He is also utterly amoral. He doesn't manifest very often because Hulk and Banner hate his guts, but when he manifests, he generally runs off to Las Vegas and gets involved in organized crime there, where he is known as Mr. Fixit. Mr. Fixit does fight crime enough to keep the cops off of his back (very cynically), but his focus is building a criminal empire in Las Vegas.
    So the real-world explanation for why Jennifer doesn't have multiple personalities is that they want to avoid the inevitable sexist PMS jokes. The in-universe explanation is that Bruce has Dissociative Identity Disorder and Jen doesn't.

A lot of her comics touch on the aspects of Jen being a better version of Hulk but lacks the brute strength and aggressiveness, she's always been aware of her world and what she can do. She's dated a good amount of superheros in Hulk form which Bruce can't plus she is the OG 4th wall breaker before DP's time, there is a lot of substance to Jen and She-Hulk, happy to see the Jade Giant in all her CGI glory!

At this point in time she is literally feminist propaganda 🤷🏿‍♂️

    25:14 the medium comes in where they actually focus on writing good female characters and not "I have the same powers as my male counter part + i'm stronger because you know female empowerment + oh yeah did I mention I'M A FEMALE"..........using the struggles as a woman as part of her character is not necessary to make her a good character. They should focus on making her a good character not a good female character otherwise why need her when we already have the hulk?

    • @videntiumomniavidentium1439
      @videntiumomniavidentium1439 2 года назад +1

      True. And as we've seen until now, she keeps complaining about so many things and barely taking any action on anything. For example, whenever she complains about stuff next to her paralegal friend, she [the paralegal] at leasts tries to make her see the good side of getting the powers and tries to push her to do shit.
      *Her paralegal:*
      - Tells Jane to have fun at the bar after she reveals her power and gains popularity;
      - Tries to motivate Jane to keep looking for a good job (instead of giving up and going for something like a mascot) after Jane get's fired;
      - Tells Jane to appreciate the new and better looking office and job she got as She-hulk;
      - Tells Jane that she can try to get a good guy if she keeps using the dating app (also tells her to get a better photo for it);
      - She goes after someone "special/with talent" to make good clothes for Jane in episode 5;
      - She will even lie about Jane being an Avenger if that helps Jane get better stuff (which is morally bad, but at least it's interesting);
      - FOR GOD'S SAKE, she is even the one to tell Jane to transform to save people in the court on the first episode;
      *She basically pushes Jane to do anything!*
      Althought the paralegal might be a bit annoying and clearly *at least* morally ambiguous, she is a much more interesting character to be She-hulk, because she doesn't complain like a *Tiger pistol shrimp* and her moral ambiguity might lead to crazy consequences that can come up later for her to face and build her character. But that's if the writters were good at creating actual good comedy with space to develop complex flawed characters.

    I don't know if the show or future MCU projects will go this route but, as a frame of reference, in the comics the Hulk has a lot in common with Moon Knight, in that he also has to deal with multiple identities inhabiting the same body. If i'm not mistaken, the regular Hulk persona, as an entity, represents Bruce's childhood trauma from his abusive father and the gamma radiation only gave a physical form to said trauma, for lack of a better way to explain it.

  • @ManSeekingMeaning
    @ManSeekingMeaning 2 года назад +14

    Christ. There were ways to do that scene between Hulk and She-Hulk properly. This wasn’t it. Jen, up until this point, has lived a fairly normal life. Average woman with a good career (and all that unfortunately may entail, yes). In comparison, her cousin Bruce has been hunted by multiple governments with lethal intentions, fought in multiple battles to save the Earth, been unable to love not one but TWO special women because of his condition, physically lost one of those women forever. and was directly involved in the death of half of the world by not being able to stop Thanos. He has been feared, hunted, shunned, manipulated, used, framed, etc. All because he has a monstrous being of rage inside of him. Oh, and he’s literally tried to kill himself by putting a gun in his mouth and pulling the trigger.
    That’s not counting the DARK depths of his comic book origins. That’s just MCU stuff.
    So, her whole spiel about the struggles of being a woman and having to control her anger come off as completely dismissive, insecure, narcissistic, and vapid in that scene. That could have been used to tease an arc of growth for her character, except the show doesn’t act like anything about what she said was wrong.
    If she had said that to any other character, almost, it might have landed and been powerful. But to BRUCE BANNER? It just reeked of a heavy handed self insert from the writers.

    hey all love the reaction, i agree with the laying it on thick comment. since no one is saying it i guess i have to. that is one thing that is becoming more apparent not only in Marvel shows but shows in general for a long time now. a lot the shows coming out have a twinge of something to them. u mean in the sense of showing one thing with a stereotype slant of that thing. that was what made the super girl of the arrowverse sometimes hard to watch. strong together woman is a good thing, the superior to men slant not so much. it was very slight more of an undertone but still there. that is the machine pushing these stereotypes on us in a attempt to keep them going and hold us back from becoming more doesn't anyone get that. we are what we choose to be. we can choose to be the best human beings we can or not. looking at this couch i see 5 people that i honestly enjoy watching. all labels and descriptions do is keep us from becoming more if what we can be. i hope that someday we can all ditch this excess baggage and be free again as when we love each other for who we are on the inside pure and child like. god bless you all and have a great day.

First off hulk took 15 years because he had DID and though he thinks its from hulk he had it before he was hulk. Second off she hulk is more flexable then hulk because yes she is a woman and this is biologically true for most women but hulk is stronger then she hulk because he is a man which is biologically true for most men and if a man wants he can train himself to be more flexable like a woman can train to be stronger. And the part about anger management, women are usually told off more for showing anger, but hulk also had DID so he didnt only have to calm down but also switch back from a different identity all together making it harder.

    She-Hulk saying she has it harder than Bruce Banner
    She-Hulk: Don't mansplain me with this Hulk stuff, I already have to deal with men trying to tell me how to do my job
    Bruce's struggles:
    - My boy Bruce was a human experiment since birth all the way to his childhood
    - His dad killed his mom.
    - The father of his first love hunted him down through all of the American continent back and forth. Not to mention the fact he couldn't get stressed in any way (incapable of getting angry or even getting laid).
    - He started to have a "normal life" in Calcuta, far away from any conflict, to get dragged once again for the greater good and suffer once again.
    - The second love of his life, dead.
    - One of his closest friends, dead.
    - Being forced by Wanda to destroy an entire city and a gigantic feeling of remorse after that.
    - Trapped in the body of his co-host in another planet for 2 years.
    - After being stuck in Hulk's body for that longo, didn't even get a second of peace, until Thanos beat his ass.
    - Watch himself how half the f*cking universe banished from existence.
    - Lose an arm in order to get half of the universe back.
    - Still being afraid of losing control, and the feeling of guilt of all Hulk's past damage to the human race.
    - Fear that his beloved cousin has to go through the same ton of crap he went through.
    She-Hulk's struggles:
    - Being cat-called in the streets.
    - Get mansplained in her job.
    Seriously???

      And the worst part about this scene is the fact even Jennifer acknowledges Bruce’s trauma and then brushes it aside like it wasn’t a big deal AND then goes on to say how men try to tell her how to do her how to handle her area of expertise while trying to tell Bruce how to handle his area of expertise.
      If you really listen to her, she just comes off as a hypocrite.
      But another thing people seemed to not notice or care about, was Jen was full of shit, she doesn’t know how to control her anger and they showed that by her hulking out at the end of the conversation.
      Then to top it off, the actual truth makes it all far worse.
      The only reason Jen can control it “better” is because Bruce was exposed to far more gamma radiation than she ever was.
      The Savage She Hulk run showed us what Jennifer Is like after more exposure and she’s exactly the same as Bruce is with Savage Hulk.
      Just another case of the writers forcing bullshit on the audience while not knowing or caring for the source material.

    Tatiana Maslany is the most underrated actress plus she is gorgeous and so sweet. this show is so good, that she will finally get the recognition she deserves. And hopefully, you guys will watch Orphan Black after you neglected the first episode.

    Jen is better able to adapt to being a hulk because she seems to be far more emotionally stable where as Bruce is a mess when started as the Hulk. I can't speak from the comics but MCU Bruce has always seemed emotionally unstable and very timid.

      Yeah, the MCU hasn't touched on it a lot, but they've implied his history is somewhat similar to his comic version, who was abused by his father as a kid and he developed DID and the Hulk personality was already part of him before getting his powers.

    While yes she is correct that Bruce is projecting. It's for good reason. If not for him her first outrage would have killed people. And not just the guys harassing her.
    Regardless this show is definitely going to prove that as much better control she is in she needs to take into consideration her life cannot be normal from now on. And the wrong move could put hulk powers into another person like Bruce's dad or abomination.
    They are both correct. But caution is more important with the size of the stakes

    She hulk in the comics to my knowledge although having been shown to rage out like hulk multiple times has been shown to be more or less in control from the start and in the Mcu it has been shown that banners blood is dangerous and the whole point of his movie was that people wanted his blood and it ended up making abomination and the leader who was presumably defeated offscreen or something
