I missed the fact that you said there are TWO little springs holding in the bulb. So I struggled, until I realized that was the case. I'm posting this comment to help others. Thx for your video. I saved over $100!
These f*n springs, can't get them lose.
I can't fkn put that spring back in clip in that's y I'm here lol
Just in case if anyone is confused.
If you have a Prius from 04-05 you’ll need dr2 bulbs. If you have a Prius from 06+ you’ll dr4 bulbs.
Underrated post
Not all heroes wear capes.
Nice!! My prius 2005 has xenon light. I wanna change for the halogen. Don’t know exactly if need some wire or adaptations.
Wait - this guy has a 2007 and he used the dr4's. They didn't work for him and he found out that the old bulbs were dr2s.
Your information helped me ,
Information goes a long way
For the spring: It functions a bit like a gate latch. Find the only part of the spring that moves when you touch it, you're in the right spot. Push that part of the spring forward towards the front of the car, while pushing forward also push up towards the hood. This will unlatch it. Now let it go and it should be released, pull it back away from the lightbulb and it'll swing open like a little door.
When putting the lightbulb back it has to be perfectly flush. Do a couple practice runs closing the spring without the lightbulb in, then put the bulb in and try closing it: push forward towards the front of the car and then down towards the ground. It may take a couple tries.

Great video man! Super helpful getting this done. It's a shame that it's so hard to see in there, it's a really tight space
Ok, here's the thing. I've never been as successful at this as I just was. You need to add a couple of instructional details: 1. You don't really need to take the black shield / plate off on passenger front. It doesn't really give an advantage. 2. The HARDEST part, by far, is re-clamping the bulb spring (anyone disagree?). 3. You can rehearse re-clamping it several times - THIS REALLY HELPS. 4. IF YOU DON'T HAVE THIS RIGHT ... you must SEAT the bulb properly or you actually will cuss a few times. Make sure you have the bulb seated. I remembered the video of the woman mechanic in San Francisco who does it like it's as easy as pressing the start button. You will CLEARLY see her, after doing this 1000 times, check to see if the bulb is seated right. You can actually SEE when the bulb seats! If you take care to do this step, the re-clamping of the bulb spring is no longer the hardest part by far. It is actually quite easy. The last hard part is plugging the wire for power in blind. I'm a very old person and did just fine without that step. Thanks for the helpful video!
This really worked for me! Like everyone else this saved me 130$ in labor costs at the service place! Did one in about 5 minutes. I thought the spring part where you actually took the bulb out was confusing but once I actually got to it, I felt it out and had no problem. The other side I could not get the cap off! I was twisting and twisting and twisting until I realized that I should try pulling the cap out-that worked. Turned out it had already twisted enough I just needed to separate it. Maybe that might help someone else. If your thinking about doing it yourself go for it!!
This comment just saved me!! I was twisting so hard and it had actually twisted too far. Once I started pulling it out while twisting it back some, it found the opening and popped off. Trying to get my driver side cap off was half the time of the whole job!
This video kept me from losing my cool replacing the bulbs on my '07 model. Serious design oversights on how all this crap was put together in there. I see why some repair shops cost so much.
Thanks for the vid!
I did it! This video and the user manual together is what made me get this right. Unclipping the thing that holds the bulb in place was the hard part for me. Overall, it was pretty easy to do this. I am not a car guy at all, so I was pretty proud to have completed this task.
i'm literally about to just wait another night and not be able to traverse in the dark than deal with these fucking clips. i HATE THEM!!!!! anyway just saw your comment and wanted to share i agree :)
Thank you! I couldn’t believe how stuck my covers were. It was good to see I wasn’t the only one.
Hey man. Thanks for the video. Very helpful. And thank you for getting right to it and not wasting my time with 10 minutes of useless preamble.
Thank you for this video so helpful once I took to Toyota shop to replace headlight in Sonoma county I walked out paying $400 did it myself this time and was successful thanks to your video
Thanks so much. I watched several other videos that barely explained the spring. You earned a like and subscribe
D2R is powered by 85 volts ballast.
D4R is powered by 42 volts ballast
I'm assuming the power was too high to sustain the arc inside the capsule and they turned off. I was suspicious about your beam pattern, too. It looked really odd.
I think the beam pattern was just from the camera, they do that sometimes with led lights
Thanks dude!! This was actually so much fun! The covers were the most annoying part. But this just makes me wanna work on all the cars now! But its winter so my hands kind of hurt hehe
It’s really hard to get the black cap off from the approach but don’t give up
Thanks for this every mechanic I have been to keeps saying you can only open it by removing the tires trying to charge me 300 your a lifesaver
I'm going on my third set of bulbs, factory ones died by 65k miles , replaced at 198k miles and going be replacing these at 346k.
Thanks a tip for anyone look in the manual it is easy once you see some diagrams regarding releasing the spring. Also apply some petroleum jelly round the boot and cable connector so the wire goes in easier. You could put the cable in the boot and clip it then mount the boot on i was struggling with mounting the fitting on.
Thanks for your video, I just got my old bulb out, new bulb in, got the wire clips in (the furthest one took me forever to do blindly), got the plug back on, but cannot for the life of me get the black cover to go back on. I see that there’s a notch you have to line up but I still cannot get it. Any tips or suggestions. It was already off when I got started so I guess the last person to change the bulb couldn’t figure it out either, hah.
You should have bought Phillips d4r oem bulbs. Much more expensive but you can get them for about $93 for the pair if you shop around.
I'm very curious, have never bought those. Do you know how many miles (I realize it's time with bulb on) more you get than the cheaper Sylvania ones? I've only used the Sylvania ones. (burn out often).
Omg YOU'RE THE BEST!! THANK YOU!!! ❤️ 😊 THIS MADE MY DAY!!!! I didn't know how go get rid of that light. HAPPY FRIDAY YALL!!!
Great video! I found it easier to access the bulb if I just took the whole headlight out.
great video. But your link above still goes to D4R which should be D2R.
I’ve been looking up info about the headlights for the 2009 Prius because I quoted with the $150 price from the dealership and I came across a story that had the exact same problem as you but went through way more trouble to find out that the lightbulbs are actually supposed to be D2R. I wonder if more people have that issue with getting the wrong info for the light bulbs.
I just finished this job on a 05 Prius and it did not have that cap. Also the bulbs are these 3 prong type. I paid $34 bucks for the pair at Walmart (Sylvania Silverstar 9003). I only struggled trying to fidget the bulb back in its place and trying to put that darn spring back properly. After 20 minutes I figured out. Thanks brother👍🏼
You have halogen bulbs, this video is for the HID bulbs.
If you have fog lights, there's a good chance that you have HID. If no fog lights then most likely have halogen.
Vlad, I'm not sure if you heard about the HID ballast recall on this generation Prius. Unless the entire assembly is replaced the bulbs will only last 1-2 years max. I bought my Prius (2008 Touring) used and it was too old for the recall so I budget $250/yr for HID bulbs. Probably why the original owner got rid of it...
might consider changing to LEDs, used Fahren for my wife’s 2013 Prius Two.
Hi. Great tuto. You helped me a lot. I successfully changed my two bulbs
Nice, look up Prius headlight springs on google images, it’ll save you a headache
This video saved my night. Thank you!!
Have to put a D2R bulb in. I had the same problem
To be clear- the plastic retainer clips holding in the part you need to move to get in there WILL BREAK. They are like a $4 replacement at the auto parts. Ideally you are prepared for them to pop off so they don’t fall in the engine, but don’t try to salvage them they are replaceable.
The left (driver's) side is the harder one, let me assure you. The fuse box is way in the way and you can not move it out of the way like you did on the right side.
Man, was it supposed to look easy? Because it’s not! Hahahahaha Now I know I need a f*** stick to open that
WD 40 worked really well for me to get the caps off
Is it safe to use wd on the seal? I tried without anything and the damn thing isn't even budging
THANK You !!!
You need to show how you get the screws out

Random stick was the silent hero
I’m having problems with the springs. Like I’m trying to understand it and I can’t get it back to hook on. The bulb is but it’s the damn springs I can’t seem to figure out.
It's the ballast.
I have 09 and the driver side bulb keep fusing only the low bean , I have changed everything including the plastic cover, connector but problem is there. Any suggestions that what is the problem. I also looking for bright bulbs. Thanks
Fingernail polish remover works great to clean lens.... gets the yellow right out.
(Don’t touch ur paint)!!!!!!!
Dude, thx for the instruction, but the silicon caps goes off without force just by turning them to 30 deg. Then they are loose. However very tight space there
I can't seem to get that spring clip to release for anything. I press down and it flexes, but won't unhook...
The Amazon links are going to a “sorry. Page is missing” I don’t want to buy the wrong bulb and I’m a total noob. Is there anyway you can send me a link to the correct bulbs.

Success!!!
Awesome video! Thank you very much
Saved my ass…thanks so much
Passenger spring popped out of the mount, could not get it to lock back into the hinge., gave up trying. Knew something else should work, with the bulb in place, put the power connector on and wedged in some thick fiberglass between it and the cover, got the cover on, done till I have to take it apart another day. So much for dumputer designers, it should have NEVER come off in the first place. Priass
Dumb question #49: are there 2 bulbs? One for low-beam, one for high? Don't laugh, I'm going to try changing the bulbs myself because I paid the car agency $400 (mostly labor) about 5 yrs ago when having them replaced. 2008 Prius, cheapo model, not touring model. Thanks much🌸
How long have these lasted?
Cool fix Vald!!! good sharing direction the bar below the headlight needs to be!
Thank you so much!
this looks like it'll take me like an hour 😅😅
Same
Probably not recommended but once I got the slightest amount of movement on the cap I took a flathead and shoved just popped the cover off.
How did you reach there? I tried with my hand and nothing is budging
NEVER EVER buy stuff on Amozon becuase of good reviews, most of the reviews are completly bullshit... go off the bad reviewes, those are the most honest... but good video, ill try it your way tomorrow when i replace my headlights on my 08 Prius.. thanks
I have the same issue with my Prius i don’t know what to do
i have learned to not trust the amazon reviews unless another website has similar ratings for the same product
Wish I had a Corolla..
Headlight still goes out like yours did, even with the D2R bulbs. Any idea?
Best way to take the cover off is gently insert one flat screw driver between the assembly and cap and twist... be very gentle because I broke my cap along the rim maybe 0.25" (width of screw driver)... then once it is coming off a bit, take another flat screw driver and gently twist both at once... it should pop off.
Thank you so much!!
This is the way. Just got it off and you are right- it pops off.
I got the cover off but couldn’t get the unplug the cord. I’m I supposed to press something to release it? Or is it just supposed to come off?
you have to twist it while slightly applying push pressure.
Thanks, it worked! Great video!
I’ve spent 10 minutes trying to get the bulb reclamped. Not an easy task
Did you have any luck with some new bulbs? I'm having issues with my HID lights in my 2009 Prius. Just bought new bulbs, waiting for them to arrive.
I did finally find bulbs that work and are reasonably priced. No issues so far, 5 months later. Here is the link: amzn.to/2WTNmp2
@@JustVlads that's good, I just replaced mine today that kept turning off randomly, once I had the bulbs out I could see they were shot. Found a pair of OEM Phillip's bulb headlights on Ebay for $50. Huge difference in brightness! Cant believe I drove around for so long with bad bulbs. Ebay seller was vivid-accessories, they were listed as Toyota OEM.
@@DwFritz23 can you please share the link?
Useful video thank you and God bless in Jesus’ name!
My mechanic is saying it cost $300 to replace my hid bulb on my 2005 Prius
👍👍
Not your fault. They put wrong bulbs in the box.
I wish I could get paid for all the profanity I used in this job. The tight space, and I had to use a dental mirror and flashlight to see. Finally found that the contacts were too wide compared to the wire plug, had to bend them in to make it fit on.
Make sure everything is hand tight.
Just like street lights .. the ballasts are running hot.
the best bulb boom for prius?
daytime?
What is the socket code ? is this 9003 or H4.
H4 and 9003 is the same thing
How do you get the clips out
Its a bit tricky you got to push it down. then slide outward. there is 2 clips. once you take the clip off don't worry the clip is not going to fall. I got the wrong bulb too from amazon. i will order the D2R
@@yousefdarvesh4343 Did you buy the D2R lights yet and how are they working for you?
@@everettfanor1989 actually mine was d4r. I check the original bulb. Plus I called my delar. They confirmed its d4r. I have 2009. I could only replace the passenger side. The driver side is hard. I will take the bumper off when it gets a bit warmer here.
D4r worked for me. It has been about 2 weeks no issue.
@@yousefdarvesh8413 That sucks. Wish the engineers made everything easier for us. Good luck
How the hell do you get the air intake out???? Bolt underneath?
Here's a quick video of what the clips look like that have to be released on the bulb.

THANK you
Never trust a bulb that says "CREE LED" but looks like an HID when you open it.
In 2006, I replaced a bulb. First, I checked with the dealer, who explained it'd require removing bumper and grill screws ("You've Got to be Kidding!"), and would cost $400. Yep, Four Hundred bucks to replace a headlight bulb. I found this ruclips.net/video/Er0oEHNUfQs/видео.html which showed it can be done without removing Any screws, and in 3 minutes, if familiar with the process.
Jeeze, that WAS a bitch…only lost a little skin in the process.
oh snap. They go on, and then they leave.
This video does not help me at all figure out how to get them out of the car...
You needed Philips bulbs ..those cheapys are no good
Toyota used to be well designed
So much design incompetence. It's as bad as subarus. JFC, this should not be hard.
05 prius with 165k miles.. who has more
Just about everyone lol
Here is "visual" video how all springs, latches/grooves/etc located. Perfect addition .TX

Amazon 👎
This has got to be the dumbest design to change a headlight bulb I have ever seen. The lens cover is also stuck on mine and I can get it off. I twisted hard and broke off one of the pegs and now this POS won't budge at all. TOTAL FAIL TOYOYA. Goof thing this is just a loner, I will never buy or encourage someone to buy this car just because of this problem. Complete garbage.
