Les Paul Tuning Stability Tips and Tricks

- While one of the most iconic guitars of all time, Les Pauls are not known to stay in tune very well. You can alleviate your tuning woes a little bit by:
1.) Filing your nut
2.) Filing your bridge saddles
3.) Locking your strings around the tuning peg
4.) Reducing the break angles as best you can with technics like top wrapping and winding the string over the previous wind rather than under
I just looked at my LP and realized that by top wrapping you actually reduce the break angle at the saddles a lot. It's the same way you reduce it at nut by wrapping the string above the hole of the tuning peg. So I think it might significantly contribute into tuning stability. Will try it next time.
Thanks for great video.
you should have more string wraps around the tuners for stability. I have a 2008 Traditional and no tuning issues with more wraps plus the stop bar doesnt always have to be jammed down against the body - raise it enough so the strings clear the back of the bridge and it will play easier and also reduce the break angle. 3in1 oil also helps in the nut slots
Make sure you add an extra ball end to each of your strings when you re-string. The extra ball end stops your hands from getting scratched by the exposed string windings that end up sticking out over the tail piece.
Great video. I have two 1970's vintage LP's and they always went out of tune so easily. The pencil/Nut Lube trick really helped a lot. I will try the Elixir strings with that string wrapping lock trick, saddles and Top Wrapping next string change which should make it even more stable. Thank You! I have heard of wrapping up before but your explanation was much better...
Great to hear! Yes, I feel like most discussions about top wrapping are about “tone” but nobody cares to mention anything about tuning stability.
I certainly agree with most of the things you're doing but I have to disagree with you on minimal raps on the tuning peg. I also think you need to drive home the point that when the string is coming off the tuning peg it needs to come off from the very top of the tuning peg to minimize the angle to the nut
You got to get the shavings from the pencil graphite, I don’t think Touching it and making a mark is enough. And Graphite in the bridge saddle can’t hurt.
I try topwrapping my Les Paul Standard 50s n yet the tailpiece ends up being tilted forward. Can’t get the tailpiece posts as low as yours. How is it possible?
That happened also to me on a stock LP Tribute I had. The problem is that there is play in the studs. The solution is either cut some washers in half and fill the gap or upgrade to something like a Fabre tailpiece and studs.
@@ryanleeashbaugh9390 I appreciate your response. So I might need to upgrade to a tailpiece which has a locking system like tonepros’ right? But tilted tailpiece basically wouldn’t mess with anything else except for the looks right? lol
Great video!
FYI, it might improve even more if you use graphite instead of pencil lead which is a combination of graphite and clay....or just a drop of gun oil. Good video!
Why aren't the D and G slots on the Nut arched instead of straight ?
“Authentic” tone
@@ryanleeashbaugh9390 it looks like that nut has been replaced though. Theres no lacquer over the sides of it.
@@KJ4VGA I removed the nut at one point to shave/lower the string height. My personal preference is to shave from the bottom rather than cut deeper slots.
I fixed my Les Paul Custom tuning problem by playing my reliable Stratocaster. Rock solid and stable. I got fed up. As much as I hate to sell my Les Paul Custom, that will happen in 2024. I just don't have the patience for it going out of tune. It has been on display and in it's case throughout the year. Beautiful but, frustrating. I tried all the things in these youtube videos and even installed a string butler. A bit better here and there but, still goes out with a couple of bends and some hard playing. I can't use it performing. The Stratocaster stays in tune even if I put it in the case for 3 days, comes out in tune.
I bought a new LP standard and it had tuning stability issues. I took it to a guitar store for a set up 3 times and it was never right. G and B string always going out of tune.
After about 6 months, I finally sent it to Gibson and they set it up to their specs and sent it back. FIXED IT!!!! It sounds and plays so much better it's almost like a different guitar. I almost sold it but it is now my favorite to play.
Great, enjoy!@@mr.h5788
I think Elixir strings are the worst sounding electric guitar strings ive ever heard. They maintain their tone, but start and finish with dead upper midrange and upper end
I had trouble hearing this.
you've been playing your Marshall too loud for too long
I have an easier way to keep in tune... buy a Strat. Pouahahah!! I'm joking. I grease the nut and sadle with chap stick. It realy works. No joke.
Why are you making a smacking sound when you start a sentence? I’m at halfway and you’re at like
