Great video. A lot of people see two balls together and automatically think they have a problem they have to break it up. When about a third or a quarter of the time there's something you can do to make a ball. The time you spend analyzing the rack before your first shot is it most important part of the 8 ball game.
8 ball, 9 ball, 10 ball, it doesn't matter, just.... PUT ME IN COACH! Love the vids B. Been a sub for quite a while. Definitely one of the best instructional pool channels on YT. Keep'em coming bro!
Now I like this video, I can't tell you how many matches I've won because my opponent was shooting from a dry break and choice the wrong balls to start his run. Good job B,
Great Tutorial as usual. You're explaining the shots very understandable and clear. It's always a pleasure watching you to make pool look that easy. Few more years for me to practice,I guess🤙🏻 Thank you very much Brian
Love it Bryan, absolutely love it!!! If people pay attention (as with Adam below) they can learn loads with this channel. HaHa --- NOT ONE SINGLE Shot contained in ANY of your videos are a ONE-TIME Deal !!!! NO ONE SINGLE SHOT!!!! But they do require practice (with intent) to make 'em repeatable!!! Be Safe
I love your videos, love how you explain things and keep it real. I'm an artist with a decent eye, shoot pretty good, but i like / love how you break it down beyond my artistic eye. ot as good as I used to be, but trying to get back to it. Thank you for the videos!
Great video Brian! There's definitely a whole different level of strategy and thought that goes in to playing 8 ball vs rotation games. The average player in a league shoots their way to a dead end too frequently and videos like this are very enlightening for someone who is focusing on the strategic aspects of the game. It's really amazing what a well executed safety or two way shot can accomplish when that advanced player is just waiting for the intermediate player to trap themselves and give up the rack lol
Brian, request for a video on how to "see" how to shoot when cue and ob are very close together or touching. I can sort of feel what to do but I'm rarely correct. Take care!
Love your videos. Learned so much over the last couple of years. The places where I shoot once in a while all play the latin style 8 ball. That means that whatever pocket you put your last ball in, you must put the 8 ball in there as well. It's called "last pocket". It leads to some weird end game strategy and gets hairy when you both wind up on the 8 ball because, you can not have the same "last pocket". If your opponent puts the 8 ball in your last pocket, they now have they opposite pocket as theirs on the short end. It leads to longer games but, is the only way we play. Would love for you to do some strategy based video on this style.
I have a student that plays by those rules. I makes the games long and allows weaker players to "catch up" as far as running balls off the table. What I recommended to him was to learn a number of multi rail bank shots to at least give himself a change to make the 8 ball in his pocket from a lot of place on the table.
@@FXBilliards I couldn't agree more. I have left many players in the dust only to have them come back while my "last pocket" is blocked for a few shots.
Hey Brian, great video. You do a lot for those of us that need help. Your content is informative and amazing and I thank you. That being said, I have question. Is there an easy way to realize where the cue ball is going after you make a shot? Do you have a video on that? I generally think I have an idea but I’m usually wrong. Lol thanks in advance.
Brian, this is an ongoing issue for many players. The best way to learn is reps. Also you should practice in a way that you "predict" where the ball is going so that you can get a better grip on the path of the ball. The reason it takes us so long to learn this, is that we spend our time (during a shot,) watching the object ball. So we do not get a good number of images of the cue ball path after a shot. Only reps with get you there. Some channels (one in particular) claims that certain gimmick will show you where the ball is going. These gimmicks are bullshit because they do not take into account , any top or low shrikes on the ball, or english on the ball. And they also make the players look silly when they put them in use. I saw a guy get laughed at for making peace-sign at the table, trying to predict the path of a rolling ball. He ended up scratching on top of everything else. Nevertheless, reps will get you there.
I play 8 ball the now on Snooker type pockets, could you do a tutorial on that game, I played 9 ball years ago and loved it but in Scotland there are few 9 ball tables
Thanks for your replay - I will see what we can do. Not many snooker tables in my area. Even in New York some have been taken out to make room for pool tables because they did not get enough action.
It's also very important to get rid of your problems early so you don't shoot yourself into a dead end. By moving all your balls out of the other players w a y you make it extremely easy for the other player to get out
For some reason I just can't seem to get the hang of the draw shot. Believe it or not I've been playing for more than 20 year's!! I know it's sad and I don't believe I'm admitting to it lol. Would really appreciate any pointers
Definitely 8 Ball. It's the game I learned as a kid and have played ever since. I'm 68 now, so I've played a ton of 8 Ball.🙂 Next is probably straight pool, then 9 ball, Cutthroat, etc.
I like 9ball the most but I never had a break and run in 9ball but had quite a few in 8ball so for me seems easier to play 8. Also, 8ball is more popular among beginners and casual players so if I play with friends who are only play for fun I have to play 8ball. But I like 9ball better overall as it is more fun, some luck involved but skill also.
I have to rant a little. Love your videos, but I don't love the APA and wish you wouldn't promote them in your videos. I moved to the East from the mid west. I've played in a couple of different leagues. In APA, I would probably be a 4 or 5 level player. The problem I have is that I would have to pay roughly $4.00 per game to be in the APA, and could never hope to get any of it back. Most of us guys at my level do not want to spend our money so people at your level can go to Vegas and have fun. I would much rather play the local guys (most of whom have quit the APA for the same reason) and pay at most $1.00 per game, and then only if I lose. In my old league, there was pay back depending on team rank, and the break even point was about 3rd place. So we had a decent shot on either making money or losing a little. That seems more fair to me. End of rant. Thanks!
There is no one on the Internet, more critical of the APA than I am. The rest of them are afraid of the APA. I don’t promote them, but I honestly discuss what is good and what is bad about them. The APA classifies me as a professional, so I have no affiliation with them in any way. Not with sponsorship and not as a player. As always, I just tell it as it is - good or bad.
True - I did see Strickland say he liked the rule with pros because otherwise it was too easy to run out and the games were boring for spectators. But I think in the APA it's just a bad rule.
There used to be a guy that would come in to my team's home bar and he would come unglued if he had to play 8 ball with the table open after the break lol. I get some people are old school, some people don't like ball in hand etc. but man he would get angry. He called it the "gentlemen's" way to play 8 ball. Stopped playing with him eventually because it was just too frustrating to listen to him complain. There's nothing intentional about a break off shot other than hoping something goes in, so being stuck to one set of balls right off the bat is definitely a ham stringer. Glad I play in a BCA rules league haha.
Another great lesson Bryan. For some reason you always touch on subjects I think about. Thanks to your advice my books are paid for next semester.
Thanks for watching Adam

Hey Bryan are you thinking about of making another straight pool video? Would be great. Thx for all of your content
Yes, the next one is already made. My videos are usually made about 2 to 3 months in advance. I will release it soon.

8 ball for sure. Probably just because that's what I've grown up on and played the most 🤷
Thanks for your replay Chris. I think most of us grew up playing 8 most of the time.
