This bent my brain. trying to figure out when to place what..it's not just as simple as do it backwards, A lot of thought has to go into this. Kudos to the creator and thank you oats for the stellar game play. ^_^
I kind of love the ending to this hack, you return the last item, the morph ball, and then suddenly the planet becomes quiet, it gets darker and all the enemies go away, just like at the beginning of Vanilla Super Metroid. You then hop into your ship and glide away peacefully into space. Ignoring the planet somehow still blowing up, it almost reminds me of the ending of Metroid 2 (especially AM2R). After you defeat the queen and the egg hatches, there are no more enemies, just you and the infant Metroid. Then you emerge above the surface, the sky is dark, and you hop into your ship with the Metroid and fly away.
Zebes blows up at the end, because Samus gave all those power bombs and super missiles to the Space Pirates, and they are not very responsible with heavy ordinance. :)
I think it'd be cool if it did make you kill Mother Brain, then gave you a really long escape timer so you have time to place your remaining items and get back to the ship.
@@danielgibson3422oooo... Maybe a hack that starts at the ship as the planet is exploding (not sure how to do the raising acid) and you have to get to mother brain first and reverse the rest of the game ala 'unhundred' style.
That would be super helpful to have a visual representation of everything you have and need to return, would definitely help with route planning I would think. Just have something to look at would be great.
Such a cool idea. I guess in an optimised route, Blue Brinstar becomes the new Tourian: place everything back right side, then place back PBs next to morph just before you place morph. Fuck knows about the rest though 😂 Maybe get Gauntlet out of the way first?
So, unique concept yes. But.... Light reminder that Gravity has the effects of Varia. So placing Varia has 0 consequences other than placing more emphasis on Gravity. I get why this is an easy fact to forget, given that randos disable that feature to make Varia a more important item But yeah, Kraid is an easy "Oh, I'm on my way down to Norfair? Might as well get this boss kill" This basically sets up the KRDP route cleanly so that you can mostly just run around. Before you do Phantoon there might be some light backtracking, but it wouldn't be terribly major. Heck, with that, gauntlet could *actually* be one of the last things you do. I'm not a professional on this, and you might have already covered this. But yeah, that's my thoughts on that.
No, Gravity doesn't have the same effect as Varia. You still take damage from lava, it's reduced, but still does it. Gravity is for Maridia exploration, Varia is for Norfair, and both is for LN.
@@forgiveman Which 'lava' are you talking about? Gravity does protect fully against the 'lava' that appears only in upper Norfair. The 'lava' that appears in other areas of the game, yeah, nothing protects fully against that. But in either case, I believe Gravity does everything Varia does and more if we're talking vanilla mechanics. The one aspect I'm unsure of is whether Varia's still needed for damage reduction or not if Gravity's equipped.
@@qactustick Varia... Is actually not necessary for normal damage reduction(I did some tests Maridia crabs did 30 damage with and without varia(with gravity equipped). Without Varia, 120 damage, with varia 60. I'm not sure how this applies to MB though.
It's pretty rad that placing e-tanks doesn't remove the full 100 energy and instead actually refills you back to the new max. Would have been better if the same was true for ammo or at least only skimmed off the max cap, but even still, I always appreciate thoughtful design and QoL things when/wherever they're implemented. 👍🏼
Would it be faster to kill Kraid first and do a hell run through all of Norfair, or would you lose more time farming for health than you'd gain not backtracking to Kraid? I suppose you end up having to backtrack no matter what because you need to run close to there no matter what to drop off speed booster and high jump at the end.
@@austinvanderveer213 true that lol. Played it since a lil kid when it came out on players choice. Couldn't beat it then without a guide but I feel a tad savvy now 😂
I've been cutting time down on my casual runs but it's still like 5 hours for me lol. And nowhere near 100%, I've never gotten everything. I bet I could now that I've been watching Oats stream though, we'll see.
This is great! I'm going to school for game development, and this concept was something I really wanted to try. Seeing as people are receptive to this idea, I think it's definitely worth pursuing.
Thanks for playing my Rom Hack! It was awesome watch!
super cool hack
how did you come up with this idea? this is an exceptionally original romhack
Would this work with Multitroid?
@@plasmaniac57he didn’t answer 😂
Love how they didn’t answer the replies 😂
This is a really unique concept! I'd love to see "Unhundred%" type hacks done for other games as well
id like to see a fourway race of this
Unhundred% rando could be tricky but also interesting
I'm sure, if you throw this idea into the modding discussion channel on the Hollow Knight Discord, some people might start working on it :D
Make it happen
This is a really interesting concept! Would love to see more optimized routes in the future
I'd love to see a GDQ event where they have a 100% playthrough, then run this hack as a "cleanup". XD
Bonus game? :3
You silly... of course this must be done first!
Samus puts all the items on Zebes, and that's why she doesn't have anything at the start of the game.
This bent my brain. trying to figure out when to place what..it's not just as simple as do it backwards, A lot of thought has to go into this. Kudos to the creator and thank you oats for the stellar game play. ^_^
Cool Hack. Would love to see more ways to clear it /faster ways. Keep it up Oats!
I like the name "Benjamin Button Challenge", super cool concept!
I would love to see an optimized route for this
Now we need randomizer unhundred%, put everything back but with rando placement of all items
Brilliantly evil.
Ladies and gentlemen, Satan himself.
That's the most evil thing I've read. 😱
Good hell
Vanilla boss order unhundred% 😏

I guess we know how Samus loses everything after every game.
she gets drunk in a shady bar
Putting it back for the next adventurers
neatly putting shit back after she takes it
The feeling when I just beat regular 100% with a 1:48:28, and Oats clears this hack well under that time.
Zebes blows up at the end, because Samus gave all those power bombs and super missiles to the Space Pirates, and they are not very responsible with heavy ordinance. :)
Oh I missed these What The Hacks
Damn Oats...I loved how you just stopped Draygon in her tracks with that last shine spark.
Very original breath of fresh air. Digging it.
I think it'd be cool if it did make you kill Mother Brain, then gave you a really long escape timer so you have time to place your remaining items and get back to the ship.
Or start at your ship with the timer and you need to get back to MB in that time lol
@@danielgibson3422oooo... Maybe a hack that starts at the ship as the planet is exploding (not sure how to do the raising acid) and you have to get to mother brain first and reverse the rest of the game ala 'unhundred' style.
this is awesome so simple of a idea but like u said the routing is crazy
1:05:30
"one of the best theme is dark ether and its just air conditioning noises"
thats pretty brutal
Would have been funny if the fanfare tone was reversed when you placed an item
This is the best idea and a huge missed opportunity.
Custom music for Super Metroid exists so yeah, 100% this.
im a simple person, i find an interesting vid, i save, go to bed, time to watch til fall
i'd love to see that on GDQ
Would be cool if they made a reverse tracker for this.
That would be super helpful to have a visual representation of everything you have and need to return, would definitely help with route planning I would think. Just have something to look at would be great.
I think the regular tracker would work, if it's the same as the SotN one.
Regular tracker would work, just click everything on first.. bosses not greyed out would still be the same though
So Samus does this to reset her suit after each mission?
Only until she reaches zero mission
@@veliusd8355 yeah. Stealing is wrong.
Dude i can't wait to see this applied in other games like ALTTP, this could be something
SotN will be a great candidate for this kind of mod.
This is actually a pretty cool concept
what Samus does every time she completes a mission:
This was super cool!
samus plants a complex bomb system on zebes to completely destroy the planet
A reverse metroidvania is just the best idea.
Lookit Samus, returning everything she borrowed to kill Mother Brain.
since Oas was talking about piano music, doesn't the title theme for Super Metroid have the forbidden E#
How do you get the rom hacks on official hardware?
Such a cool idea. I guess in an optimised route, Blue Brinstar becomes the new Tourian: place everything back right side, then place back PBs next to morph just before you place morph. Fuck knows about the rest though 😂 Maybe get Gauntlet out of the way first?
This is a really cool idea.
Is there a way to patch all SM ROMs so that the fanfare is shortened? That's all I want. Quick item pickups/drops.
That exists. I'm not sure why this patch doesn't use it.
This is a really cool idea for a mod. Good job to the devs. Wonder if this could work for something like Zelda
Definitely 👍 👍
I come from 1 year in the future and I can only imagine an unhundred% randomizer
Wouldn't reverse 100% be the best route?
"Pineapple belongs on Pizza"
and then stream ended
this is why samus loses her abilities, finally it makes sense now
This should definitely be in the next GDQ
this looks fun. i think hindsight you should have saved blue and green brinstar for last

You'd still have Gravity suit for heat protection
My most recent standard run was missing 2 missile expansions and it was like 3hour +. You just did a third of that time backwards first try lol

Or basically play the game backwards.
The boof
So you’re essentially restocking the dungeon
I wonder what GT code does to this
Imagining this being speedran

the guy that said
2 hours 33 minutes and 3 seconds makes me uncomfortable, that is way to fucking close to the actual time
Have you played Axiom Verge?
Kraid's theme from Metroid is a fuckin BOP tho
This hack would make for a cool gdq run Oas
Back to the future
Interesting idea.
This is a fantastic hack would love to see runners do this hack on a regular basis
Nice!
Atleast now you can hold a 100% WR.
the gravity suit ... err... Vwowwww... should be reversed since samus is powering down.
Now you can 100% to Un100% the game.
uhhh oas? an hour and thirty minutes into the run and you havent even gotten morph ball yet? hurr.

Beat Super Metroid with Power Glove.
i need closure on the laptop
maybe this is what actually happens between games
This simple hack turned SM into a puzzle game. Would love to see you run this at AGDQ if possible!
Has anyone ask oats to play ancient chozo?
I'm pretty sure oats just played the video AND talked backwards the whole time.
Huh, wonder how a randomizer in this setup would work
Gotta do the RAMBO route. Kill MB first
Hi oats I think the game would be easier if you kept all the items just a thought xx
