Homemade Fire Starters with a 10+ Minute Burn Time!
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 14 авг 2024
- Make a homemade firestarter by following along with this DIY project! All you need are three simple ingredients that you'll find in your house and in the woods. When made with good quality ingredients these firestarters resist wind, light rain, and have over a 10-minute burn time!
Firestarter supplies:
- 1 used up candle with leftover wax or paraffin wax chips from any craft store
- 1 empty egg carton
- A few handfuls of dry wood shavings. You can make these with a knife, chainsaw, or even purchase animal bedding chips if you don't have any wood handy
How to make the homemade fire starters:
1. Melt wax
2. Make or gather wood shavings
3. Arrange into egg carton in small balls
4. Pour melted wax on top ( I use only about 1/4" of wax per egg cup)
5. Let cool on a hard surface
6. Cut and store for your adventures!
To keep these fire starters good for as long as possible store them in a plastic bag so that the egg carton doesn't absorb moisture from the environment.

People who burn a lot of candles always wondering what to do with all those remnants could use this idea instead of throwing them away.
Even better is dryer lint
We Don’t throw them away. We melt them down and make about 12 new candles. Lint being reused is great!
If you don't feel like shaving wood use hamster bedding. It's made out of wood shavings and chips.
You can also use a candle warmer to melt the wax.
Even better is sawdust because it’s free if you know someone who is a woodworker
or mix sawdust/ chips and dryer lint
More fun to melt the wax by the camp fire! The pine bedding is a good idea though!
Shredded paper, shreds of tinder, shred of fat wood, lint and wax
Great video. I do the same thing with chain saw chips. Works better than any commercial fire starter.
I make mine from Scentsy wax , cotton balls , wood shavings and petroleum jelly . Smear petroleum jelly on newspaper, roll cotton balls n wax n wood shavings up like 4 inch burrito...store in small zip baggie ...burns for 10 plus minutes . Premodern store in pack . Crayons work too
Inspirational. People like you are the reason I've just started.
Do you know any forest ownersin UK that would allow me to live there I would be respectful of their land it's just so once I have my equipment I know where to go
ok
Learned something similar with sawdust and wax, paper egg cartons in the early 70's in Boy Scouts and it's obviously much older than that. They work GREAT! You can research how to add material so that a fire steel will ignite them. I just use a match, but I've made some that will burn an easy 20 minutes, will guarantee a fire no matter how wet the wood. Fun video!
I just dip jumbo cotton balls into melted wax and form them into cubes. Cut them open or use your fingernails to open it and a firesteel will work great. You can also just put a flame to it and it'll eventually go up.
better by the dozen. Really like seeing a pretty young woman enjoying the outdoors and having skills and knowledge about non gadget things. In summer try citronella candle wax
Good idea. My wife has just got some Yankee Candles for her birthday. I'm going to pinch one of them to make some
I get my emergency candles from the dollar store and use the melted stubs with dryer lint in an old egg carton then cut them out and light them and they work good
Excellent video!!! Thanks for sharing!!! Cheers from Newfoundland Canada 🇨🇦
I make fire starter mosquito repellent candles. Might as well have a somewhat multiple purpose candle
... great idea .... citronella infused ...
I have always used dryer lint in place of the shavings, sawdust also works.
Pencil sharper shavings make a much more compact version
I tear up the top of the egg carton and fill the spaces with that. No need to go looking for other material.
True dat.
Dryer lint is plastic, flame retardants, dyes, etc that would not be good to be burning
I like this girl. I’m subbed!
Also, that’s a super-cute hat.
.... Great informative video ....... Nothing better than spending time in the woods with your dog .... Stay Safe ..
Good video thanks for ur fire starters in woods . I use jute twine as my fire starters always w little wax on it but nice film thank u so much.
God bless u.
Hello my outdoors friend thank you for sharing those informative fire starting tips. The very best to you stay healthy out there. 🤗
When candles no longer burn at my house I cut them out of the jars cut into small pieces and use in the oil burners or bag and use as fire starter then wash and clean the jar and use for storage, or painting , they also work great for plant starter covers. . Use your imagination everything has another use . Even bread ties. Burnt out light bulbs makes beautiful Christmas bulbs . Glue glitter ribbon, the grandchildren and I made their Mom a whole set of light bulb tree bulbs , we even got my paints out and what a mess but the kids had a blast . They came up with beautiful pictures that they drew and painted on the bulbs . Mom well she loved them and still has , you would have thought they cost a million dollars, they did hand prints on canvas, it is time to do those again their hands are much bigger now .
Another easy fire stater toilet paper rolls, flatten cut into approx 1 inch strips place , take old candles melt , take your toilet pâté rings place in candle wax. Once covered and soaked in remove let cool place in plastic zip lock bag, fold to fix your backpack , works great . I have them everywhere for you never know when you may need one to keep warm also in the vehicles.
Best video yet. Nice
Instead of cutting wood shavings I just take the top of the carboard egg carton you tear off and tear it into strips. Then fill the individual spaces with that. I use crisco instead of wax. I wrap one in aluminum foil (so it doesn't make a mess) and leave it in my vehicle in case of emergency.
Pretty cool....and gosh, you're adorable.
I don't know why but I found it incredibly enjoyable to see a young lady jazzed about fire starters, but I did. Informative as all-get-out too! Honestly, those are the best homemade fire starters I've ever seen. Hands down the best DIY RUclips video! Or should I say, "The rest can't hold a candle to you?" I was trying to get some inspiration for some fire starters I'm going to make for my youngest daughter who has really been getting into backpacking recently. Great job, my dear. Merry Christmas, peace.
Why wouldn't you get excited about a fire starter? ruclips.net/video/wmin5WkOuPw/видео.html
@@DaveTex2375 You're only right!
Why can't all videos be like this? You're really awesome! Enjoyed your video immensely 👍
Hello 👋 my outdoors friend, thank you for sharing this brilliant outdoors tip. Stay safe and healthy out there. 😊
Oh yeah, that was very cool how you made Dusty disappear halfway through the video! Right on.
The crackling fire in the background as you prepared the "recipe" was great to hear. And the music and Dusty were a great addition. Greetings from the Northeast , New Hampshire.
If you're a bit Lazy- I found that Waxed Cardboard Cartons from the Greengrocer Work Awesome, just Chop into Convenient sizes & your set!! They happen to be Very Water Resistant & usually sourced for Free!!
Not as Good as your Recipe but pretty good non the less!! - Cheers 👍😁🍻🇦🇺
Awesome lesson!
Napalm also works pretty good 😁
My older brother uses something like that for his wood stoves at his farm. Very nice...
Indiana is good for that lol cool n fun to go in the woods
Brilliant!
Excellent tip and idea thanks or sharing, and greetings from this small rural town somewhere in Mexico!
Interesting concept. And if you need fire starters for your homestead this seems a practical approach. But people need small and manageable firestarters that are portable, easy to carry, and won't get crushed in a backpack or other storage bag you take with you in the woods.
I went with a different approach. You need three ingredients. Cotton rounds (the bigger the better), petroleum jelly, and candle wax. First, melt the petroleum jelly. I just dump it in any metal food can as long as it is wider than the rounds you are using and heat it up. Next dip the cotton round in the liquefied jelly. Set them aside so it cools and they turn back into a jell. Wax paper and needle nose pliers help with this. Next, melt the candle wax. I use tea candles that you can pick up at the local dollar store. They are already in manageable sizes and enough come in a pack to make several fire starters. Generally speaking, it is easy to remove them from their tin holders. Just pull them out using the wick. Then remove the wick. Takes no effort at all. Once the wax is melted, dip the jellied cotton rounds into the wax. Pull out and let it cool. What you end up with is a cake. The wax water proofs the fire starter, and the jelly on the cotton round is your fuel.
To use them there is two approaches. You can score the edges with a knife to expose the jelly. Or you put those wicks from the tea candles to good use. Drill a very small hole in the center and push the wick through. Light the wick and as soon as the wax melts, boom, you have your fire starter. (Though you can help it by scoring around the center wick.)
As a rule of thumb, always keep some dry tender with you. But if you don't have any and it has rained, you will need to make some tender. And everybody in the woods should have a "bush" knife on them similar to what this lady is using to make these fire starters.
As for storage of these fire starters, I have a round tin can I put them in. It is about three inches in diameter. Wide enough to fit any "cake" and it will hold several. It is also light and small enough to be practical in your backpack.
Post edit.
I would not recommend making these in the summer months if you are making them outside. The heat from the summer sun will keep the petroleum jelly from going back to a jelled state. So the production time will be longer. Make them when the temperature is cooler. Seriously, the melting point of petroleum jelly is so low, you could liquify it just by leave a jar of it sitting on your car dash for 15 minutes.
I make my own when i need to burn brush piles. I like burning when its wet or snow covered as i have woods near me. I do wax, cotton swabs separated into fibers, then birch bark and shavings, hemp cord, and then shavings from a ferro rod. I use jar lids or snuff cans, pour a little wax to coat the bottom, then put the filler in, then pour the wax. I use a lot of wax cause i am trying to keep a flame going while its wet or wet conditions. Remember to leave a couple wicks of hemp cord sticking up. Mine have burnt upwards of 30 minutes or more.
Thanks for your video. All the best and Happy Holidays.
Way to go Callie great tip. I'm going to try that. Thanks!! Hello Dusty!!
Thanks Richard! I’ll tell Dusty you said Hi!
You are such an amazing person. Keep surviving friend
great idea will try this in my area of WA
A long time ago I once made the mistake of trying to melt the remains of a jar candle directly over a flame. You can probably guess what happened lol
Also the dog at 4:35 is hilarious and then later you can see him creeping back in wondering about getting at whatever is in that fireplace.
Thanks for the idea.
Try quality paper towel half sheet rolled up an dipped in wax but leave an inch at the top to ignite. Most burn times are 15 minutes. Dip a few times.
You are awesome and good looking! Thank you.
Love your channel
All of these expert on here are hilarious. Don’t you like it when everyone wants to tell you how to do it better without telling you how to do it better? 😂😂😂😂😂. The best fire starter is one that works for you, period. Thanks for the time and effort in producing videos. 🙏
Dusty: *You gonna eat that?* 😂 Good to see ya out and filming, Cal. Stay well.
Great video, just need to make sure you use a cardboard egg carton
I use to get wood shavings from a carpenter / woodworker workshop near my home. I live in an urban so that was the easiest thing to get. They anyway throw all that dust away. Then I put the whole thing on a baking sheet and I melt candles plus a little bit of lighter fluid and saturate it all in a large flat cake form. The wax acts as a binding agent. Once it all cools down and the wax changes colour to white / opaque, just cut the whole thing into small cubes or strips if you want. It's much quicker and less messy. Try it.
Greetings from Norway. Good idea, also nice to be able to do it while outside:-).
The crackling of the fire is nice 😊.
Here's a more petroleum free alternative (unless it's beezwax its petroleum. ) Get some pine fatwood, make shavings and sawdust from that. Get some pine pitch , melt that down. mash all that into some frazzled jute twine, (dollar store) which will also take a spark if you fray it up around the edges. Ignite, then take the small fatwood slivers and put on top. Total jet. What sucks about parrafin is breathing it in. You could also melt it all into your paper egg carton thingies.
Or use crisco.
I appreciate you sharinG your vital information especially durinG these turbulent times for Humanity's Wellbeing!👍With oVer 2 Million Floridians without Power today...your firestarter idea would truly help out many!👍I lovVe your enthusiasm in thiS video...it's absolutely Contagious!😍I also lovVed seeinG Dusty...the Other RUclips Star in this video!😂🌹🐶🌹AnnnnD...because I haVe been cookinG for at least 50 years now...I totally lovVeD youR camp oVen!👍Shine on YounG One and enjoy Life wherever you go!✌🙏😇🌹🌞🌹🔥🔥🔥🌹☕🍵☕
That's a pretty awesome knife. Proper bush craft knife. Very nice.
Awesome, i liked and subbed, Its great to see a woman who knows how to survive in the woods, You go girl
Works well. We use sawdust and candlewax, but wax on dryer lint works as well. Just get the wax hot enough, and use enough.👍
Great video! Will be making them today.😀
Seeing this I do wonder if another version might work as well or better. That would be instead of putting the shavings in an egg carton, instead grouping them up into a small bundle and tying them with a natural fiber string and dipping them into the wax. It might be a little less messy as they could be set on foil, and the ends would be more spread out, but the center would be more concentrated for when the fire got going more, in theory. Very neat idea though!
Oh, the expert.
i like how that brown and white wolf snuck up on you smelled the candle fire starters n left
Very cool 🤠 great info!
Great video!!
Awesome vid! I love it
this is why i have 2 different wood chisels in my bag at all times. as someone who also lives in the pnw, it's hard to find dry wood that will start a fire easily. hence why you chisel a bunch of shavings off and put them to the side, continue shaving until you get a nice pile, these shavings won't be as wet as the exposed wood that you first shaved off. use the "dry" shavings as your first starter and use the first shaving as your buffering wood. then add small twigs and branches as it grows.
I recently saw someone who suggested carrying a plastic pencil sharpener. Almost no weight and you end up with shaving from small pencil sized dry twigs.
We have great Fire starter videos too!!! Great job on the homemade fire starters 🙌🏽
Love it❤
We did this with the cub scouts. When the boys got older and were cold camping I saw the zip lock bags come out of the back packs. We used dryer lint as well as cedar shavings I had for my chickens. if you don't put them in bags, your get home bag will get messy in the summer when they melt. I also live in the pacific northwet.
good idea. i just bought two of those knives off amazon. for the price they are very good.i like mine anyway.
Nice! I’m no knife expert but they seem to do the job well enough!
Our homestead Channel started following you as well 😊🔥 #teamPNW lol
First time viewer & making some soon!
Condor Bushlore, the same knife I use for my outdoor adventures.
This looks like a fun weekend project!
This is my favorite fire starter recipe, Wax impregnated wood.
Personally I would have preferred to use wood powder, or sawdust, and shape them into bricks.
Good Job.
Great video! When I first saw the egg carton fire starter concept, the guy was using dryer lint but I found that cotton balls worked fine. 2 cotton balls kind of torn apart and separated and then combined together and stuffed into one egg compartment works very well. But I guess I've been wasting wax because completely saturating each compartment gives me the same burn time. So I like your method.. I'm okay with scented wax for using at home, but I try to use unscented wax for the fire starters I have in my backpack because I don't want to attract animals or bugs. Can't wait to try your method!
Best to use a non scented candle if you are backpacking so your firestarters don't attract bears. Also, I have found that you can use lint from the dryer and it will last just as long.
Good video. Pine cones work good too. But they can be a little hard to handle. I just had a great idea. You live in the Pacific NW use a giant pine cone from a redwood. 👍
Haven't back-packed in years since my friend died but damn. This is the sort of stuff he and I would have bent over backwards to enjoy.
Positives from the video - good info, pretty woman doing Bushcraft.
Negatives - Amazon plug (knife)
Miyagi would be pleased: "Wax on, wax off."
An old fashion wood planer would make those shavings easier to cut
The fur pup 😍
Very nice, I have lots of wood chips and shavings from my spoon making. I will make a bunch up. Thanks and take care.
The whole time I thought she was gonna light herself on fire. Great vid! Don't sit too close to that fire.
Very cool 😎🤗💞
Looks like a cool place to live.
Indeed these are some of my favorite home made wet weather fire starters we’ll worth having in a fire kit
Feed that dog , he's hungry !
🤣🤣
Cool
I love how you use a fire starter (lighter) to start your fire starter.
Same thing works using dryer lint. Lint takes a ferro-rod spark better than large wood shavings, but doesn't burn as long. Maybe a combination of both would make a better version.
Try a cotton ball soaked in vaseline. Light right up using a ferro rod and burns for several minutes. Plenty long enough to get a fire started.
Making my own fire starters used to be a hassle - so messy and time-consuming. Now, I rely on Black Beard Fire instead!
AWESOME Ideas!!!
thanks.
Pretty interesting idea .. however, I still prefer good ol' birch bark and properly dried kindling .. also pine cones, when available .. not much mess and waste of time with them :))
Thanks for the great idea.
Nice video, great fire starter idea !!
Alternately? leave the egg carton at home and bring a dozen cotton bore patches/makeup pads and a sheet of parchment paper. Much less room in your pack, save the knife, no splinters, and can be lit by just a spark from a striker. Just dip the pad in the wax and remove promptly after it saturates and let dry on the paper. Dries hard with no mess. Simply break in the middle and tear it in half and strike one. That's 24 per dozen pads, long burning and twice the bang for your buck while being an easier to pack item.
Just stumbled across your channel and really enjoyed this video. I teach forest school in UK and am always looking for new projects. What knife are you using in the video please?
Great video. And my dogs name is Dusty too... 👍🐕
Five O' Clock in the morning... Can't sleep and I see your vid... But... But... How can this be???? You're a G... Gir... Girlll... Girlie Girl doing a "How to make fire starter" vid! Am I really still asleep and this is just a dream??? A woman... A girl... with an instructional fire starting video???? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The moment she pulls out that knife, the dog INSTANTLY disappeared! LOL
Smart dog too!
I bet she can blow up balloons really FAST too!
I made those but used oak heating pellets.
Dusty got a scent of food and was not giving up the hunt.
You put lots of cotton balls and Vaseline in a glass and stand it in the sun until all the cotton is soaked up with Vaseline. Burns great.
