  • A fun video showing a few ways to chop the break. There are many ways to do that, really, but these are the most common ones.
    Some rave video footage courtesy of Jungle Syndicate Recordings.
    Intro track was made on Reason 10. I might do a video, on how to make jungle with a computer.
    I use:
    akai s1000
    soundcraft spirit fx8 with lexicon effects
    alesis quadraverb
    korgmicro
    Cubase VST32 for sequencing

    i think chopping them into 1/2 pieces with the “play to end” option enabled gives you a lot of freedom. you can use phrases, but also chop in more intricate slices.

    I'm wondering HOW you are actually chopping the breaks IJO?
    Inside the Akai? On the computer first, then recording the chops into the akai?
    If so, what program do you prefer?
    I've been doing alot of research and there seems to be several different ways. All I know is that I want to preserve that "swing" in the break that we love.

    • @IJOSoundVideo
      @IJOSoundVideo  3 года назад +7

      I use SoundForge for all my sample editing and browsing / saving. I usually match my bpm on soundforge, and i sample the full break in to the akai, where i do the chopping. I have tried in the past chopping breaks in soundforge and then sampling separate chops in to the akai, but it takes longer, and, the chops end up being slightly shorter and it kind of looses the groove, so i prefer doing the chopping in the sampler, it's pretty fast.

      @@IJOSoundVideo thx so much man this is a huge help. I'm using adobe audition to do the browsing/saving b/c I've had experience with cool edit pro back in the day!

      @@IJOSoundVideo If you wanna use little slices without hear that choppy sound especially at high pitches there's a little trick:
      In SoundForge add a reverse copy of your slice right after the first and resample the entire sound, now your slices have that extra tail that fill the gaps when you go at high pitches.
      Also, if you want to keep the original groove you just have to extract the midi transcription of your break and drop it in your daw and move the single elements at your taste.

    you know, if you ever get around to it, i’d love to see how you sample and chop breaks on the s1000 and whatever tips and tricks you have for working with the s1000. the tricky part i guess would be filming the screen and using it at the same time. 😬
    just a thought anyway.

    • @IJOSoundVideo
      @IJOSoundVideo  3 года назад +1

      Hey, i was actually thinking on doing a video like that, the problem i have right now is - my screen is very dim, and while i am ok working with it, it won't show much filming it on camera, too dark for that, and am not planning on replacing the screen any time soon. And to be honest, the manual is pretty informative :D When i had to chop breaks the first time 11 years ago, i wanted to see a tutorial about that, and there were non, so i just went through a manual, and after doing it several times, it became pretty easy and intuitively fast. This isn't a drag and drop situation (like with many computer soft sampler players) so it does take a bit of time, but it's worth it :) There are other ways, like using scsi cable to dump your files using recycle, but i haven't used it as i feel i'd rather sample my sounds via analog input and then do the chopping inside the sampler.

I've tried time and time again to get that sound with no success. Like they are super heavy but clean at the same time. Thanks in advance.

    • @IJOSoundVideo
      @IJOSoundVideo  Год назад +1

      Well, if you want these sounds - take it straight from these tunes, if you can find clean breaks on them.. It is very difficult to get that sound from first generation breaks and process them you self with plugins, it won't sound good.. I have lots of breaks , good and bad, mostly bad, but what i pick up is based on my taste, and most of these breaks i own are taken from other jungle tunes.. Or i go through stuff my self and look for clean breaks, like in early Photek stuff, and take it from there, it's just sampling stuff u like :)

      Hey, what kind of sampler are you using ? While i find the S1000 sounds perfect for what i need, i had s3000xl for a while as well, and it behaved differently always sounding choppy, i figured it sort of cuts milliseconds from the start of the chops which might create the choppy effect which i am not keen on at all.
