  • Where do automobiles go when they reach the end of their useful lives? Why the junkyard, of course. So, where do military aircraft go? If they’re U.S. military aircraft they most likely go to the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group aboard Davis Monthan AFB in Tucson, Arizona. But don’t call it a “junkyard.”
On this episode, U.S. Air Force Colonel Jennifer “Re-Jen” Barnard, AMARG Commander, joins us to explain how and why aircraft arrive-and eventually depart-this extensive facility which covers four square miles, employs hundreds of specialized technicians, and saves the military and taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars annually. …sure, we’re calling this episode ‘the Boneyard,’ but don’t let the thousands of preserved aircraft fool you, there’s a lot going on at the AMARG.
Listener questions include how aircraft self-healing fuel tanks work, air-to-air combat between fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, scary carrier landings, and the realism of the movie Top Gun’s jet wash scene.
Episode artwork adapted from original photography by Capt. A. Bongers. Bumper music by Jaime Lopez / announcements by Clint Bell. This episode was produced by our friends at The Muscle Car Place Podcast Network.

The AH 64D apache also uses two self sealing fuel tanks one fwd of the magazine and one aft of it. Again the construction sounds the same with a layer of uncured rubber that swells when hit by ballistic damage. Also present are breakaway valves in the event of a high g impact (crash) that have a wasted portion and NRV (non rtn valves)

The H-60 airframes also use SSFTs in our two main fuel tanks both of which are located just at the start of the tail cone after the main cabin, the big external tanks you see sometimes are also self-sealing, as well as the internal auxiliary tanks we fly with and all have breakaway valves as standard.

Great episode! Getting closer to doing an episode for us mechanics huh?
Just a question for anyone, I recently had to take the spray lat off of a couple of airframes and it was a real...chore to put it lightly. Is there an easy way to get it off or does it always just suck?

Really enjoyed this episode, amazing how long some of those aircraft sit there and can still be reactivated. Not sure if we have something similar in the UK, but the Arizona climate must certainly be a huge advantage. Plus I thought it was so cool you found the first Hornet you flew! Almost like seeing an old pet you had to put up for adoption, quite touching in a way.

I am so jealous that you got to share some beers with a US Navy MIG-28 pilot!!!
Did you ask him about the problem the MIG has with its inverted fuel tanks? According the reading material provided to me by the Pentagon the MIG won’t do a negative G pushover but rumor has it some hot shot pilot maneuvered against a ‘28 in this way once so the data on the MIG may be inaccurate.....I heard he got a great Polaroid, at like 2, 3 meters. With help from his RIO of course. Maybe you know his fella since you both were in the Navy.....😜

Wow I really thought I misheard but one of the aircraft Colonel mentioned that came back from "The Boneyard" is C-145 Skytruck, here in Poland we use designation PZL M28 "Bryza" (Breeze). For me it's pretty heartwarming that the USA uses that kind of plane, but now it's even more when I heard that it was "junked" but restored and returned to the service! As I am now studying as avation engineer it's something motivational and I can only dream of building that kind of plane in an eauropean country, which later can be used by the USA (which has great aviation corporation but still can buy foreign technology aircraft).

The whole people getting upset in the Pacific Northwest over carrier landings really bothers be. Living directly across from a USMC 4th and 5th echelon maintenance center we encountered a similar situation. When the base test track for vehicles was in need of repair they built a dirt test track 100 yards from our homes along the fence line. Seemed like two years straight all we could hear 24/7 365 were M1’s and AAV’s running the track and constantly covering our home and vehicles in dust. They still use it to this day tho not as much nearly 10 years later. It was a joke around the family to not wash you car before coming over. Never once did we complain or question the need for it. That said our opinions may be biased as we are a family of USMC Veterans but they can suck it up in the NW for the freedoms they enjoy.

Say you had a buddy, and he wanted to lend his neighbor 20-30 jets. The neighbor is pretty hard in his stuff and the buddy might not get them back. How hard would it be to replace these initial jets with say, F16s from the boneyard. What time of time frame would we be looking at? Asking for a friend

Just found this channel. Listened to the F-117 episode because I was trying to figure out how what I always thought of as a bomber ended up with the F designation. I was an Army guy (Airborne Infantry) but have always been interested in aircraft since I was a kid and being former Airborne have my own...how should I say.... interesting relationship with the Air Force and aircraft. Thanks for producing such a great series and keep up the good work.

Loosely related to an episode question, here is a link to the arrival of a USN EA-6B Prowler for display at the Castle Air Museum. It flew in and was greeted by a team that would safe & demil the aircraft before placement on static display. Jell-O might notice a signal given just prior to engine shut down. Many thanks to Jell-O, his team, his supporters, and all that he interviews! "History makes you smart, heritage makes you proud!" ruclips.net/video/3MjoQPlsXZQ/видео.html

I was fortunate enough to visit Pima Air and Space Museum twice in one trip to Tucson. I was in town with my University of Oklahoma team for an intercollegiate R/C aircraft engineering competition called Design Build Fly (we placed 6th out of around 90 teams, just saying) and I was able to visit the museum two days in a row with two different groups of students and our aerospace engineering professor. That was an amazing experience because he was a wealth of knowledge about the design principles behind the various aircraft.
