    I remember in beauty school doing one of my practical exams on a Japanese woman for a PF, her hair took so long to lift. It was insane. I was on crunch time, I convinced her to lift to an orange and I gave her some nice chocolate copper lowlights lol but Japanese people have strong ass hair.

    • @Iflie
      @Iflie Год назад +79

      Yeah it's the strongest hair so obviously any straightener from there is probably too strong for many other people. I remember from highschool that the asian straight hair is very round, while curly hair is kind of flat with scutes sticking out. Mine will cling together like velcro without product, I can never use heat as my hair turns top straw even just from a blowdryer.

      @Flower7 Oh no, round is the most perfect state of the hair. Though straight hair can be weak from damage and from being thin. You can have thick curly hair too but nothing is as strong as thick asian straight hair. It's what most natural extensions are made from too.

      @@leratosss Once a chemical or high heat is applied to your strands, it breaks down keratin. Your hair is no longer healthy no matter how it looks visually. Yes, you have to take care of your hair for it to remain at its best state.. but dye, bleach, relaxers, too many unnatural products, and high manipulation will destroy your locks and prevent it from retaining its length. The majority of the time, the ends are sparse due to breakage.

  • @BurningheartofSILVER
    @BurningheartofSILVER Год назад +392

    I wish Crystal went into more detail about why the Japanese straightening treatment was worse for the client’s hair other than “its not made for us”.
    The damage on the first client looks no different than the typical damage you would see on anyone who is transitioning from a relaxer and trying to manage two completely different textures on one head. Honestly, I was impressed with how little damage there was given just how long her natural hair was. She was transitioning for a whole year, so the fact that all of that old straitened hair hasn’t all snapped off is way more impressive to me. Especially juxtaposed to the second client whose hair was fully relaxed and there were clearly chunks of uneven hair INCHES shorter than the rest. (This is in no way meant to shame client 2 in anyway! It’s not my place to judge any woman on the way she takes care of her hair. I don’t know her life and what she’s going through on a daily basis.)
    I’m only concerned from an educational perspective to learn why Crystal emphasized so much against the Japanese treatment, but had no problem doing a relaxer on hair that was so much more damaged. What is it specifically about the Japanese straightener versus any other straightener, and particularly why is a relaxer okay? I just don’t see how you can boil it down to “its not made for us” then go on to use a product that WAS made for us, but is clearly doing just as much (arguably even more) damage to that specific client’s hair.
    At the end of the day, all human hair on a molecular level is made out of the same keratin and disulfide bonds, the only difference is structural. All of these chemical straighteners and perms do the same thing. They break down the chemicals bonds of the hair shaft, the stylist then shapes the hair into whatever shape you desire, and then the chemicals reform the bonds again.
    There are many videos of black girls living in Japan getting these done, and making it work long term because that is all they have access to, so to attribute the issues the first client had to the fact that the treatment “wasn’t made for us” when there are a number of factors that could have contributed to damage she experienced feels irresponsible. It’s not just that “Japanese hair is more course than our hair”. I pray that you all know better than to generalize and entire population of people into one stereotype. These treatments were literally made for Japanese people with finer, curlier type 3 hair to get the straight look.
    It’s one thing to encourage the use of black-owned products and businesses to support the success of the community (we can all get behind that), but its a whole nother thing to say was can’t use certain products because “they weren’t made for us” with no explanation as to why that maybe the case. Its language like this that made me and the other little girls around me growing up think that we would never be able to have long healthy hair because we couldn’t afford the products that “were made for us”. Language like this limits our options as black women, and it doesn’t just stop at hair, but I’m not gonna get into that; this comment is already way too long. At the end of the day, whether you’re relaxed or natural, whether you’re using Suave, TGIN, or you’re buying products from the Asian market down the street because thats all you have access to, our hair is stronger than you think, and I guarantee, as long as you keep your hair moisturized, you are gentle with it, you manipulate it as little as possible, and you protect it while you sleep, you can make any product work.

      Japanese relaxers are better than a regular relaxer because of the chemical base. It's all about the after care. It's the same base as the Jerry curl back in the day that grew the hair like crazy.

      My lovely late bonus used to use Geri Curls well before getting into my late daddy's life. At some point, I'll say mid '10s, and my bonus sis-in-law did her hair, and not only got the Geri Curls out, but went from shoulder length to Bob length or touch shorter. Since then, just wore natural hair, straighten it but bumped the ends.
      Edit: Jeri and not Geri.

    I have a Japanese hair straightening system. My stylist is Japanese and learned how to do this system on black women’s hair. I’m black fyi… I love it. He doesn’t put a lot of heat in my hair. And my hair isn’t processed fully. He tested my hair before applying my first treatment and wrote down specific instructions on how to do my hair. My treatment is tailored to my hair. I love my stylist and my hair is now down my back. I put heat on my hair maybe three times a year at 160 degrees and one pass. during the treatment he straightens my hair at 130 degrees and one pass.

    I’m a stylist and I do Japanese thermal reconditioning every single day. That is all I do . If it is done properly it’s an amazing process and hair is often healthier if retouches are done in timely manner and client properly takes care of hair. I have clients that couldn’t get hair past their shoulders and now have waist length hair. BUT…. You are absolutely correct this hair type is not ideal for this process. I discourage all clients that come to me with this hair type from doing Japanese for this reason . It will break eventually, curl is strong , hair is weak and the two textures tangle . There are new options on the market that are also permanent but much more gentle .

      JHS treatment is an amazing process for everyone but only if you maintain it with proper home care and getting touch ups when needed.
      I have afro hair , and i’ve had this treatment done for the past 2 and half years. For the past 10 years i haven’t been able to grow my hair past my shoulders up until getting the japanese hair straightening. Now my hair is half way down my back !!
      The only time i experienced breakage was when i waited to long to get a touch up. The difference in textures with your new growth and previously treated hair causes to much friction and cause the hair to snap !

Not only that but some women be flat ironing every few months which can lead to breakage, split ends etc..

      Curly hair is *exactly* what Japanese straightening is for, though. It's not very common, but there are Japanese people with curly hair. Because it's not the norm, they may have difficulty figuring out how to care for their hair or honestly just prefer to make it straight bc they like it. Koreans do it too and I believe they use the same chemicals/process as the Japanese straightening.
