Even worse about the heavy-weighted pressure plate, it takes 150 mobs or items to fill it up to the max. but entity cramming exists so that basically means that you can only ever put 25 mobs onto a heavy-weighted pressure plate for a max signal strength of 2 without toying with the game to make the entity cramming limit higher.
Maybe it could be used as a warning system for a mob collection chamber thing, once it hits 20 mobs it turns on a light or a note block that will let you know when it is getting close to entity cramming. other than that, I can't think of any other good uses with redstone.
@ivan-the-crafter That's the problem, the only way to get it to a signal strength of 15 is with 150 completely different items (because with the same item it would group it up).
They were added before entity cramming was added as a rule, so older mob farms were able make use of them. A good example is when enchantment XP levels went all the way up to 50* and you spent ALL of the required levels for the enchant you wanted, not just 1-3 like you do today. Using the iron pressure plate, you could make a spawner XP farm that accumulated mobs up to the point that it would give you exactly 50 levels worth of XP and then automatically shut off and/or notify you it's ready for the next harvest. *Edit: okay turns out they reduced the max enchant level to 30 in 1.3.1 and added weighted pressure plates in 1.5, but the rest of the point still stands as they didn't reduce the enchanting XP cost until 1.8
