I'm glad I discovered this channel. I haven't seen any other people uploading non-gameplay Just Cause content in 2024. So, thanks for being a beacon for the Just Cause community!
I've experienced this glitch for a few seconds before reappearing the assets fine thanks to an infinite grappling hook mod I have, combined with using the fast reel in feature and also running the game on a slower storage drive, a MicroSD card on my Steam Deck. There's also a sort of "medium detail" mode too where everything still looks almost as bad, only slightly better, but still have collision.
As a game programmer myself, my bug fixing gut instinct on what this is, given the context it happens when loading objects going really fast, is that somewhere in the process an object is being unloaded while still in the process of being loaded, if that's at all possible. Say there's a more complex object, the engine would spend more time working toward processing the main file with all the assets prior to the much smaller epe file afterwards, if in this time the asset is then unloaded there may be a window where it then tries to load the epe to an asset not in memory, breaking the process. Ideally to fix (if this scenario is the case) would be to have a check prior to loading the second file to verify the first one still exists, if not, skip that object. That's my guess at least.🤷
Just Cause 2 can get this as well, both naturally and intentionally by loading a location file packed with the wrong byte order (Little Endian file loaded on PS3 or Big Endian file loaded on PC) and it pretty much acts the same way as it does here. I guess someone has to find it in Just Cause 1 now.
This just happened to me on Series X and I've never seen anything like it. I spent 40 minutes flying with the wingsuit exploring. Seems like there's absolutely nothing you can interact with, I'm disappointed that I unloaded the world where the ground was at because it would've been nice to have a jet to get around with. I knew something was wrong when I couldn't start an air race and pausing then unpausing wouldn't load it. I'm not sure if me doing a boat race and then quickly getting the big head gun and going to Volo Dracon might have had something to do with it but that's how it happened to me, might've been windsuiting too fast or something. Fast traveling gave me a black screen so yeah there is no way to fix it.
Interessting that caves and tunnels seem to not apear with the big glicht. I played back then a bit around with the editor for Cryisis wich used an regular hightmap for the terrain in wich you could edit seamless voxel objects to create detailed cliffs and caves. Looks like Just cause had an similar approche.
I mean there's no reason for them to be visible in the super low poly versions that are so far away you can barely see anything on them. Also, JC3 and onwards use volumetric terrain. Not sure about the madmax game, since that seems to be closer to JC2 than JC3 when looking at its files

Lol, I had this happen in just cause 4 and that was my snap point with that thing. Might give it another shot now with the big mod
