I had a funny thought that it was because Sara kept targeting his normal self thinking he was weak. So much that she literally killed him first EVERY time so she could use his death to manipulate others. So he had to get his crap together and completely re-arrange himself into a more cunning person so he wouldn't get targeted. Which is hilarious and depressing at the same time. In short: Poor Shin
