Jockstrap's sound reminds me of loving a song even after hearing it a million times. It feels like they record their music with the concession that it is fundamentally beautiful, which then allows them to handle production in a very playful and intimate way. Listening to a Jockstrap song feels a lot like you are in a room remembering a song you love with a bunch of people who also love the song as much as you do. It's kind of bizarre and funny and warm.

The first time he heard it, my dog did something similar at that part of "Concrete Over Water" - he got up, looked around, and responded by barking to perceived barks from the song. I think he only responded like that the first time, and I don't think he has reacted quite like that since.
Hey, had you as my French Professor, so I have to ask you to review the song Achilles, Come Down by Gang of Youths. It's got these sick French refrains that if I was a better student I might know what it's saying.
I don't like the term "socialised male/female" because it kinda assumes a causal model/idea/framework that we can't be sure actually applies. Like we can all agree that people conform to expectations to varying degrees, but implying it's just socialisation raises the question of why males would be socialised that way in the first place, and then we'd have to question whether that original cause is still in effect. I'd prefer the term "(stereo)typically masculine" or something that doesn't imply any shaky causal inferences. BTW I'm not mad or anything I just like thinking about these things sometimes, you're my favourite music critic.
Love you professor. But why do you think it's a bad name!? It kind of perfectly represents the dichotomy of their music. Between beautiful and ugly, crude and divine, organic and synthetic. If if I ever need to give someone a visual of what Jockstrap is I would say it's like some black and white, smoky, noire scene from a film. You escape the rain by walking into a jazz bar that's dimly lit and every man in a suit is smoking a cigarette. A pianist and singer duo are playing beautifully and look the part- a dapper tux and a scarlett, sequined dress. Suddenly she rips half her face off and is revealed to be an android. The piano man slumps over. You didn't notice he was a skeleton the whole time. This is Jockstrap. Thank you.
I am sitting here with some chocolate Hobnobs (from the freezer) and a cup of tea that could be described as builder's tea. You know your stuff. I am not a British artist, merely an Irish somebody. Very, very impressive, nonetheless.

Yes! I played the Jennifer Beals Maniac video this morning in my spin class. Jockstrap is one I'm so excited about these days. It's exactly true that multiple listenings reveal more and more from them. They bridge the cerebral and approachable. I was listening to I Want Another Affair driving home from a surprisingly amazing concert of Poppy, Jane's Addiction, and Smashing Pumpkins tonight, the tickets for which I purchased in a fit of pique fueled by discovering yesterday that Jockstrap's concert later this month in Chicago at Sleeping Village was sold out.
