That specific road is a must for anyone interested in seeing America. At times is it a white knuckle experience but I think that most drivers are pretty generous and forgiving with a person in front of them taking it slow. It is one of my favorite drives . Granted I travel and live in a Dodge Ram Promaster which is only about 17 ft long. Monterey is just lovely ,so is Carmel and the rest of it. Hearst Castle/ San Simeon...fantastic!Last year I drove all the way up the western coast to the Canadian Border ,made a right turn and came back on the eastern side of Washington State,Oregon and CA. What an experience. I was pleasantly surprised by the Oregon coast ,which I find even more striking that the CA coast. And my favorite of course ,the Puget Sound WA! I feel like a lucky man. Aside from the outrageous gas prices is that a really nice part of the country.
That would be quite the adventure in your rig, can’t wait to see the video 😉😆 Safe travels and look forward to sharing chips and salsa again one day soon.
Kirk creek - our favorite spot . You camped in our spot too. We have a 21’ trailer If you want a risky drive, go in to kings canyon the back way with a trailer.😳
Wait till you get north of San Francisco and see if you still say "it's not too bad". Lol I love the PCH and have driven it several times. Great job on the videos! If you are ever boondocking in BLM or National Forest and hear a trumpet, come say hi. Dan
We’ve heard that section of PCH is tough! It’s a beautiful road, so glad we ‘risked’ towing the section we did 👍 We’ll keep in ear out for the trumpet 🎺😊
Several years ago a young woman in Texas decided she wanted to follow the full time lifestyle. So she bought an old Class C fixed it up & burned a path to California. She drove almost non stop west on I-10 & hooked a hard right at California's famous Pacific Coast Highway. Again, she drove hard, impatient to get to San Francisco. As it turned out, she drove the Big Sur coast AT NIGHT towing her VW. Can you believe it? I couldn't. One of the most magnificent drives in all the world & she did it at night. Unbelievable. What a wasted opportunity. She found SF to be crowded, congested and VERY motorhome UNFRIENDLY. !
Beautiful drive! We did the Oregon Coast one summer and finding an RV spot was a nightmare!! Plus, we paid $60 or more per night in a gravel pit with no views! Coming from Canada, this was pricey with the conversion. You sure got lucky with your ocean view campsite!! Were you not worried that your dogs would poke their noses somewhere they shouldn't and get bit by a rattler? Safe travels you guys!!
Thank you, Nikki! We agree, summertime anywhere is a nightmare. We are fortunate to have family near Seattle and we spend a month or so with them over the summer to avoid the busy, out-of-school, family vacation season. Sorry you had such a bad experience, hope you give Oregon another chance as it really is lovely... one of our favorites. We were extremely fortunate to score that ocean view campsite, but California is not cheap!! We paid $35/night to dry camp there 😯 No complaints though, it was worth it for a couple of nights. It’s a constant internal battle for me between worrying about keeping the dogs safe and wanting to let them be dogs, exploring and being happy. I give them as much freedom as I can, but do so comfortably knowing we have a reliable recall, they’re good with people and other animals, and have had snake avoidance training. Thanks for the kind wishes, and for watching and commenting 👍
Embracing Detours Thanks for your reply! We really did enjoy the Oregon Coast...we hugged a few giant redwoods & those magical views kept us Twitterpated😉 We also ventured off the main highways finding so many cool geocaches. Lotsa neat hikes and secret spots!! We spent a month and made it as far as Trinidad, California which was a really neat spot. Best seafood omelette I've ever eaten!! You are lucky to have family in Seattle to buffer your travels! Have you ever been to Vancouver Island?
We have found that the 50 -50 rule seems to show up in a lot of drives when u query trip reviews. I have started to become very skeptical of the negative reviews, especially after our Alaska trip and last years Oregon trip. When we went to Alaska reviews were making the roads sound real rough. Some said we needed to bring spare tires, extra fuel etc etc. We found the highways little different than what we encounter at home in northern Saskatchewan Canada. I found out that much info was outdated.
I have missed watching you for a couple months, sorry about that, but it looks like your channel has grown as much as TJs facial hair, lol. Such great videos. I was a fourth grader when I saw the Pacific Coast Highway, and wish I could see it one more time, but I really appreciate you sharing your drive there. I also hope to have time to catch up on your videos that I missed. You do such a fine job, and I really love your channel. Take care, and keep it between the lines!
Beautiful campsite! We have stayed a few places along that stretch and yes, some really tight curves between Kirk & Plaskett Creek. I think the craziest part of PCH is way up North - Mendocino area or some place way up there. A bit frightening at times while towing!
Yes, we got lucky scoring a campsite at Kirk Creek! We were prepared for the worst and pleasantly surprised it wasn’t as bad as we were expecting. We’ve heard that about the northern portion of PCH, you’ve towed it? How large of a trailer?
Embracing Detours we towed our 16’ Scamp & our 19’ Rpod. Husband was driving and I was cliffside. Towing a 30’ on the upper section would probably be a bit much for me...
Embracing Detours it’s probably doable - maybe follow it along on google earth? Our whole thing is staying small with our RV but we aren’t full time and our catamaran (where we live) is not so small... 49’ - small on land & bigger on the ocean! Safe travels 😬
So does TJ think a 5th wheel dually with 40ft trailer will make it on PCH? BTW We have made layer on our Google map with your stops so we can check them out!
🤔 We’re told tractor trailers and logging trucks do it, so it is possible... anything’s possible if you have enough nerve, right?! It will take every bit of concentration from the driver, you’ll want to take it nice and slow and use the pull-outs to let faster traffic pass. Going north to south is the preferable way, in our opinion, because you’ll be in the outside lane and not be up against the cliff side. This is also beneficial because most of the pull-outs are on the west side, so you won’t have to cross through traffic to enter/exit the pull-outs. So glad we can help inspire future stops for you guys, safe travels and we look forward to running into you on the road one day 👍
We took 101 from Washington almost to San Francisco with our 3500 Chevrolet Dually and our 36 foot travel trailer. It was such a beautiful drive. There are some pretty tight winding curves. We just took it slow and safe. We are looking forward to finishing the drive south in the future.
Hot tip for the next time you drive Big Sur... The Big Sur Inn for the best breakfast you'll ever have. Nice video. BTW, if you go north, 3 hours north of San Francisco, stop and stay at Anchor Bay... one of the most serene and beautiful places I've discovered. You'll love it. Happy travels.
Thank you for the hot tip, Tim - we love breakfast out! We look forward to exploring California north of San Fransisco one of these days, we’ll be sure to check out Anchor Bay when we go 👍 Thank you for watching and commenting!
Great video guys, TJ you are the "master of B roll!" We love the PCH. Fun story, when I was working for Kodak, I went on a business trip to California . It was my first time in the state and not know when I would be able to return, I wanted to see as much as I could. We were going to visit suppliers in SoCal and Silicon Valley. I convinced the person I was traveling with to drive the Pacific Coast Hwy from LA to San Francisco and even stoping at Hearst Castle. We have since been back and done the reverse trip taking more time to see more of the sites.👍
Wow! I have done that road more times than I can count. No one ever told me I shouldn’t pull a trailer on it. Glad I didn’t ask. I really see no issues at all as long as you take your time. Should be on everyone’s bucket list.
We honestly wish we hadn't asked, almost talked ourselves out of doing it. We were definitely prepared for the worst and pleasantly surprised it wasn't nearly as bad as we were expecting. We agree with you, no reason to avoid it, at least in our size rig, and it's a must do drive 👍
that is one of the must do drives in the states. ive done it 3 times. 2 times in a vehicle and once on my bicycle. the bike ride was my favorite why to do it.
Oh wow, I bet that was an amazing experience! We noticed Kirk Creek Campground had a separate area for bicycle campers, so that must be a fairly common thing. Thank you for watching and commenting 😊
@@EmbracingDetours bicycle touring is very popular. i've cycled all around the country but hwy 1 and 101 is by far the best and most biker friendly in my opinion
Drove from Newport Coast to San Francisco on the PCH yrs ago. Still my favorite drive ever! It’s so beautiful! Glad you guys decided to drive it! Gorgeous campground! Great video! Enjoy!
I have done the same drive in a 20’ converted skoolie and created videos as well. Clearly a trailer of 30’ is not too bad but it’s those 40’ era that would scare me. In reality the width of your vehicle is often as much an issue as the length. Nice video
Hey Gus in a bus, thanks for watching and commenting! We felt comfortable towing our 30’ trailer but agree, anything longer is more than we’d want to take on.
PCH is a beautiful drive for sure. I used to live in Ventura, and we often drove PCH all the way to San Francisco. California is a beautiful state, but the politics is one reason I moved to Oregon. Too bad. Those fur babies seemed to enjoy your walks as much as you do. Thanks for the great videos and super good narration.
California is a beautiful state, but so is Oregon so it sounds like you did well in your move 👍 The pups are always up for exploring new places, they’re great little travelers. So glad you enjoyed the video, thank you!!
Thank you for sharing. We drove our 29ft fifth wheel in September 2019 and it was a beautiful drive. Yes anyone who drives down the coast just be careful and enjoy the drive. There are lots of pullouts. Of course we didn't have reservations at Kirk campground so we stayed at Hearst Campground.
Yes, it was a beautiful drive... for others considering it, I would say don’t let it intimidate you, just take it slow and enjoy - well worth it! We get into the Hearst San Simeon area in next week’s episode, did you visit Hearst Castle?
did you drive from the coast north of fort Bragg to leggett? we're driving from Washington state to s. d. in Sept pulling our 26' t. t. . any reason I can't pull my tt thru there?
Great Vid! I Love PCH! As an avid motorcyclist living in So. Calif., I've done it numerous times on my Harley's over the past 40 yrs. PCH is one of the BEST bike trips in America!!!
Looks like you had beautiful weather. The last time we drove on highway 1 in that area it was quite foggy. Breathtaking views!!! Thanks for sharing! Would love to camp in that campground. Winter time on the coast is almost always sunny. Great time to go to the Pacific Ocean! We are headed to Florida in a while - the first time driving beyond Jacksonville. So hoping for good weather.
We were told by Californians that October is the best time to visit the California coast, but our transmission delayed us until November. We were fortunate to have such nice weather! I'm excited for you to visit Florida this winter, best time of year to go! Where all are you planning to explore?
Embracing Detours We are going to stay at Manatee Springs State Park, Rainbow Springs, Moss Park and Lake Okeechobee. Looking forward to spending a few weeks in some warmer weather!!
Rainbow Springs State Park is my old stomping grounds, I went to Dunnellon schools from 1st grade until graduation! If there's any way at all for you to get on the Rainbow River, do it! Kayak, tube, boat - whatever vessel you prefer, it's a gorgeous river! Wishing you perfect weather for you time in Florida ☀️
Embracing Detours Oh that’s awesome! We will certainly try to get on the river if we can. I think we are only staying one night so it might have to be when we first arrive or the next morning. 😁
Can't believe your luck in getting that camping site. Looked perfectly safe for a vehicle with a 30' trailer. That highway is on my bucket list and wouldn't miss it for the world if I was in CA.
Neither could we, getting a spot in Kirk Creek was a major score for us! We felt very comfortable towing our 30’ through that section of the PCH and were surprised how many people advised us against it. Hope you’re able to get out there soon 👍 😊
fyi...there's no "the" in front of PCH :) just PCH. But...it is "the 101" and "the 405" and "the 5" etc. ;) although I think a Nor Caler would argue that there's no "the" in front of any freeway name lol but we all agree that it's just PCH, no the PCH
When I lived in Northern California, I drove that section of the PCH many times, granted, not towing a trailer. I love that drive. If you get a chance to go north of San Francisco, it is Phenomenal. It may be tougher with a trailer due to some hairpin turns, but you should be fine if you take it slow.
Thanks for the video. I live in So Cal and have always avoided that area while towing my trailer. I always take the inland routes. We ventured into Oregon and Washington last year. Towing on Hwy 14 on the Washington side of the river border was eye opening. I had to keep my eyes really wide open to keep from being over run by big rigs!
Beautiful video! Excellent variety, brilliant editing, changing scenes on the strong beats but not too often, & gorgeous shots. Wow! I've driven the PCH in my 17' campervan, pulling off frequently to catch my breath & relax my knuckles, before the huge mudslides several years ago. Spectacularly beautiful drive.
Boy you scored with that beautiful campsite! That’s such a great highway to drive...so gorgeous. We drove it about 10 years ago in our car from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Thanks for sharing your adventure. 👍
We definitely did a happy dance when we checked availability for Kirk Creek and saw a bluff front site available for a couple of nights! That sealed the deal for driving down Hwy 1, so glad it all worked out the way it did 😊 Thank you for watching and commenting 👍
Nice video, grew up In Northern California and have camped in many of the places you have been recently, its been fun to see those areas again. Loved your Idaho videos as I now live in the Boise area and am planning some great adventures in our new rig. BTW, your dogs are very cute (my wife always looks for them in your videos) we own two ESS pups who travel with us.
So you’re one of ‘those’ people all the native Boiseans love so much 😉😆 Boise was a great town, we truly enjoyed our time there, but we were really surprised by a lot of the comments we received on that video! We wish you all the best with your future adventures in your new rig. And the pups say thanks, they agree they’re very cute 😊 We found our Springer at the Humane Society and he is the best dog. His eyes just melt me. Thank you for watching and commenting!
We have kind of hop-skipped our way around the Pacific coast - we did the entire Oregon coast and the very northern bit of California our first year. Last year we did from Santa Cruz to Moro Bay. We look forward to filling in the gaps one of these days.
So glad you guys got to see Big Sur - it's really 'bucket list beautiful'! Didn't realize the CA State Parks aren't dog-friendly, otherwise would recommend Pt. Lobos State Park, just south of Carmel - maybe my favorite place in CA :-). Thanks for sharing - brings back good memories of our last trip this past October! Safe travels!!
Great Video.. I definitely found driving north of Big Sur much easier than south... Just wondered what kind of drone you use in your videos? Thanks Chad from Cleveland
Hey, Chad 👋 Thanks for watching and commenting! We were under the impression the PCH north of San Francisco was a more difficult drive, but we’ve never done it so no personal experience 🤷♀️ We use a DJI Magic Air 👍
Unfortunately not (boooooo California!). But don’t let it keep you from visiting, we still found plenty of dog friendly things to do along the California coast - hiking in the National Forests, city dog beaches, breweries and restaurants with patios, etc. If you don’t already, check out BringFido.com to find dog friendly accommodations/restaurants/activities in an area - there’s an app for your phone. Enjoy and give your corgis a pat from us!
Kirk Creek we checked availability online about a week or so before our visit and took what was available and scheduled everything else around that. Santa Cruz Harbor & Monterey Fairgrounds we called maybe a day or two before to check availability and reserve, and we grabbed a first-come first-serve spot at Hearst San Simeon State Park. We consider ourselves very fortunate to have gotten the campsites we did on such short notice!
Unfortunately, California State Parks are not very dog friendly. Thankfully, the National Forests and some city beaches are dog friendly, so we seek those places out 🐶 👍
That road is one of my favorite motorcycle roads. From Monterrey to the campsite in this Video is very doable with a trailer. However as you go north the road will get narrower and much more twisty. I likely would recommend against it but it is doable. TJ will not see much 😃
Guys the drone shots, WOW. No crashes this time TJ. Great job.
Take it slow is best advice, and yes if you are driving, you will miss some views. Great review!
Spectacular video!
No more than a 30 footer....challenge accepted? We'll let you know if and when we try it! Great video guys. See you down the road!
That would be quite the adventure in your rig, can’t wait to see the video 😉😆 Safe travels and look forward to sharing chips and salsa again one day soon.
I white knuckled HW1 from Oregon to San Francisco pulling a short trailer.
Awesome, thanks for putting this together.
I hope you stop in Pismo Beach. The RV parks are awesome, good winery visits. Worth a few days stay.
Also look on the seashore its elephant seal birthing season... and monarch butterflys
We did get to see elephant seals, that will be in next week’s episode!
Kirk creek - our favorite spot . You camped in our spot too. We have a 21’ trailer
If you want a risky drive, go in to kings canyon the back way with a trailer.😳
I love camping In pffifer state park
Beautiful State Park! We drove through but didn’t get out because we had our dogs with us.
Drone shots are awesome
love your videos!
Thank you so much!! We appreciate you watching and commenting 👍 😊
A little close to the drone at 6:57! Yikes! Another superb video with tons of beauty!

It’s such a pretty coastline, hard to take a bad shot. Thanks, Stephen 👍
There can be land slides too. This makes the road only one lane in places. It is a very beautiful drive- especially further north.

@@EmbracingDetours we drove San Francisco to LA last week with work, so all freeway. Dreaming of a lazy PCH RV drive.
How do you like our Calif. fuel prices?
Not a fan 😒
Thanks for the video guys! Do you think the drive would be a challenge in a 29’ class c motorhome?
Can't believe your luck in getting that camping site. Looked perfectly safe for a vehicle with a 30' trailer. That highway is on my bucket list and wouldn't miss it for the world if I was in CA.
Neither could we, getting a spot in Kirk Creek was a major score for us! We felt very comfortable towing our 30’ through that section of the PCH and were surprised how many people advised us against it. Hope you’re able to get out there soon 👍 😊
What great videos!!! Absolutely beautiful!!!
Which of your cameras did you take a picture of the surf.
Thanks for sharing
Thank you, Tom 🙏 We use a Canon M6 and a DJI Mavic Air for the drone shots 👍
@@EmbracingDetours Very nice thanks
fyi...there's no "the" in front of PCH :) just PCH. But...it is "the 101" and "the 405" and "the 5" etc. ;) although I think a Nor Caler would argue that there's no "the" in front of any freeway name lol but we all agree that it's just PCH, no the PCH
You Californians are cray cray 😜 Haha, I have noted the correct usage of PCH, thank you 👍 To be clear, did we drive PCH or did we drive the PCH? 🤔
@@EmbracingDetours lol. You drove PCH. You can take PCH to the 101 to the 405 to the 5, e.t.c. lol
🤯
Watched this video again. It is absolutely beautiful! Thanks for bringing us along.
Our travel trailer toy hauler is eight and a half feet wide, and I'm not sure I'd want to tow on that road.
Our Airstream is 8' 5.5" wide and 30' 11" long- the drive wasn't bad as long as you take it slow.
That was a beautiful sunset! Thanks for sharing! Safe travels!!
Our pleasure, Shirley 😊 Glad you enjoyed, thank you for the kind wishes!
Looks like you are enjoying the trip along PCH - and why wouldn’t you? Great footage. Be safe
We are, it is beautiful 😊 Thank you, Donna!
When I lived in Northern California, I drove that section of the PCH many times, granted, not towing a trailer. I love that drive. If you get a chance to go north of San Francisco, it is Phenomenal. It may be tougher with a trailer due to some hairpin turns, but you should be fine if you take it slow.
Thank you for the insight on the northern section of PCH, we hope to be able to travel that section one day.
Outstanding photography. Thanks for all the time and effort you invest in taking us along for the ride!
Thank you, Daryl - we really appreciate your kind words and love hearing you enjoyed the video!
One of my favorite campgrounds and you guys got a bluff site too! Very nice 👍
We were able to book that site just a week or so ahead of our stay, considered ourselves very lucky 🍀 Thanks for watching and commenting, John!
Love the photography on your videos! Absolutely beautiful!
Thank you, Sharlotte! The Big Sur coastline made our job easy 😍
YOU NEED TO TAKE IT ALL THE WAY TO WASHINGTON. BEAUTIFUL DRIVE.
Embracing Detours awesome...thanks... keep up the good work and safe travels
Very good video. Just the right amount of discussion and loved the scenery. I really enjoy your channel being a fellow AS owner.
Thanks, Doug! We love our Airstream, it's been the perfect home on wheels for us 😊 We're happy to have you along for the adventure 👍
Ohhhhhhh you guys are sooooo darn good at making beautiful videos! I really look forward to each one! Outstanding narration too! Thanks! 🥰👍👌😊🎉🎉🎉
🥰 You are too good to us! Thank you for all your support and kind words week after week, Loran!
Embracing Detours Awwwww thank you!!!🥰
Awesomeness Thank You !!!
Glad you enjoyed, THANK YOU for watching and commenting!! 😊
Awesome cinematography really captured the beauty of the Pacific coast 😊
Thank you so much, very kind of you to say 🙏
So California State Parks aren’t dog friendly. Good to know. My three corgi kids wouldn’t like that at all.
That area is so beautiful! Hope you guys are doing well. :)
Did you have to get reservations at all your CA campgrounds? And how far in advance?
Kirk Creek we checked availability online about a week or so before our visit and took what was available and scheduled everything else around that. Santa Cruz Harbor & Monterey Fairgrounds we called maybe a day or two before to check availability and reserve, and we grabbed a first-come first-serve spot at Hearst San Simeon State Park. We consider ourselves very fortunate to have gotten the campsites we did on such short notice!
Oregon has some of the most beautiful coast ever. That drive is a must and they are dog friendly.
cool stuff. I lived in Cape Town for a bit and they have a very similar coast line
It also reminded me a bit of the Amalfi Coast from my trip to Italy last summer. Gotta love it when the mountains meet the ocean 👍
Love the video! Could you please let us hear the waves crashing to the shore for us land locked viewers. 😁 Thanks!
We've made a note for next time.... waves crashing sound 🌊✅ Thank you for watching and commenting!
@@EmbracingDetours Thank you! Safe travels!
Damn! Y'all are getting good with those videos!
We appreciate that, Rick! 🙏 😊
NOT DOG FRIENDLY----- HEAD NORTH
Unfortunately, California State Parks are not very dog friendly. Thankfully, the National Forests and some city beaches are dog friendly, so we seek those places out 🐶 👍
Watch for whales plenty there
We checked the whale migration charts and were a little early (or late?) in the year for them to be in that area.

That road is one of my favorite motorcycle roads. From Monterrey to the campsite in this Video is very doable with a trailer. However as you go north the road will get narrower and much more twisty. I likely would recommend against it but it is doable. TJ will not see much 😃
