Isayama planned Eren out for so long. The amount of patience he had to turn Eren from a young 13 year old hyped kid wanting to fight titans to turn him into a broken character who has to face many decisions and each one of those decisions sacrifices something to let it happen. I truly love Isayama with his amazing work of literature and effort put into Attack On Titan.

    • @YamiKisara
      @YamiKisara 4 года назад +46

Isayama literally said he himself didn't understand Eren until he heared him through Kaji Yuki's (Eren's voice actor) work. He also said that initially he turned a blind eye to it, but he now accepts the uncomfortable truths about Eren that he knows exist within himself as well.

    • @faisalal-qassem3758
      @faisalal-qassem3758 3 года назад +12

I just started re-watching the anime after catching on the manga. It's honestly incredible how Isayama brought Eren to his character's logical conclusion. From the first four episodes outlining exactly what he would become, the cultivating of his spirit throughout the battle of trost arc, and step by step increments from that point onward building upon his weltanschauung, his realization and ultimate willing enslavement to fate is phenomenal. Moreso when you see the author start talking directly to us through Marco, to Erwin outright stating there can be no future where humanity (well Eldians actually) without Eren, versus Armin's more concillitory views, and hell even Reko (or whatever the gray haired woman's name was who was tasked with assisting Eren block the hole in Trost being disgusted by having to use a "defective" titan (in this case method) to save themselves. You see this concept come up time and time again where people are forced to use to a less than palatable means to achieve their survival and eventually be forced to use them to survive, which eventually culminates in Eren's "choice" to destroy the rest of humanity to save his home while at the same time giving Armin the freedom to challenge his decision as he always had.

Yea, Eren has always had that passion, and funnily enough Armin is the person who always helped him come to the realization. Showing him the book of the outside world, telling him what his parents tried to do, and the example you listed. Armin has always been by his side as their goals have always been the same, but now Armin cannot agree with Eren's method and that has caused the rift. There are lots of reasons for rooting for Eren
    1. Eren's one of, if not, the best character post-time skip
    2. It was repeatedly reinforced that in order to achieve freedom something horrific would be necessary
    3. In every previous arc Paradis (except final arc) was threatened by Marley without any prior provokation and hundreds of thousands of its people were killed
    4. We've been with Paradis from the start and care that it's safe
    Reasons why the Rumbling happened
    1. Eren couldn't rely on negotiation with enemies that didn't see them as human and sought to end them all
    2. Negotiation with possible allies yielded nothing
    3. The clock was running out - Eren and Zeke were nearing death, Marley was finishing war with other countries and would turn to Paradis again, this time with convential armies
    4. Paradis can't defend itself from Marley with their vastly inferior military
    5. Or from any other country's military
    6. Reliance on the Power of the Founder meant Historia would be sacrificed, but it wouldn't ensure that the Founder or royal blood remained in their hands indefinitely
    7. The world was closing in on tech that could give them a fighting chance or even surpass the Rumbling, while neither Paradis tech nor Titan powers had the same potential for growth
    8. Zeke's secret solution was again genocide of Paradis
    9. Since Eren only got his Titan powers by convincing Grisha through the Attack Titan's power, a Power he could only use with Zeke in P A T H S after commiting to the Rumbling, not commiting to it would mean he never got Titan powers and Paradis is destroyed by the Warriors
    10. Now that Eren freed Ymir, he can only use the Founder for a short amount of time before Ymir leaves to be reborn
    11. No Ymir in P A T H S = No more Titans = No more aces up Paradis' sleeve = Paradis will be destroyed in the future
Of course you could hope that things don't necessarily have to be this way, but this sort of optimism may be misplaced.
Far as I've seen, pro-Eren people argue that the full Rumbling was necessary based on all the evidence in the manga and pro-Alliance people argue the opposite by pointing out the few people (often Eldians themselves) who've come to view Paradis sympathetically and that killing potentially billions doesn't make up for saving a tiny Island, as well as insist the "cycle of violence" couldn't be broken by Eren this way.
I mean neither is wrong, they've just got different priorities or believe just because we've never seen a country (Hizuru's government never formally agreed to side with Eldia) advocate peace for Paradis, that it's still possible if the Rumbling is stopped or if Paradis did something(?) different.
You can't really use arguments the Alliance themselves make, because its Marleyans literally only joined this to save their people and argue Eren's (morally?) wrong because they cannot and should not accept an end like this on any level whatsoever. The Paradisians either want to be heroes or do the most objectively good thing (prominently Connie, Jean, Hange), want to save Eren's soul (Mikasa, Armin), or don't know as much as we or Eren do to make a well-informed and clear-headed decision. Armin for instance still thought if Eren had agreed to a non-aggression pact he could have saved Paradis and countless innocents, but he was unaware of Ymir's existance and still doesn't know the significance of her allegiance to Eren.
Eren's committed to this horrific apocalyptic holocaust for about 1 year to 10 months, after he and his friends had wrecked their brains prior to find promising alternatives, his friends on the other hand have to make that choice in literal hours after it was decided for them. Their gut reaction is to reject it on the basis of morality and optimism.

When it comes to most of the main characters of the show, even side characters, it seems like the thing Attack on Titan wants you to know is that everyone's point of view has merits and shame. No one is wholly good, and though some folk strive to be as morally upstanding as can be, the only times where outstanding progress has been made are the times when people dirtied their hands.
Erwin is a huge example, performing missions that would have guaranteed deaths, even ensuring some of those deaths, because he saw beyond the hell. Armin is another, as he tricked Reiner and Berthold into thinking Annie was being tortured in order to free Eren. Then, becoming the Colossal Titan and killing not only scores of soldiers, but also civilians in the process. He may try his best to be the best person he can, but he knew in order to get what he wanted (saving Eren), he couldn't avoid staining his soul. Upon realising that her world as she knew it would be stifled, and that people would be prisoners and forced servants to Fritz' ideals, Historia chose to defy the wills of her family and Eren (when he desired to be eaten), forcing the bloody path ahead. Ymir cared only for Historia, and thus she would do anything she felt was for her benefit. Her joining with Reiner and Berthold meant there was further disarray in the field. The titans would have likely decimated many scouts still, but with Ymir on side, some of the dead may have instead lived on. But none of those scouts mattered. Not even the rest of the 104th mattered. Only Historia's safety mattered, and she would throw all away for that.
When the warriors began learning of how human the Paradis inhabitants were, they still kept moving because they had a purpose they could not shirk from. Reiner may have pushed them forward, but they all were there because they felt they had to be. They let Marco die for what they had to do. Eld, Gunter, Petra and Oruo were killed because they were in Annie's way from capturing Eren. Berthold would have the guilt of killing countless innocents on his shoulders up to his death, but resolved to push on for Annie, his family and himself. Reiner literally split his soul in two so he could endure, and so he was blessing and bane to his friends, a huge pillar of support on one hand, and the reason they're all suffering on the other. But he continued on regardless, for what he believed was the right thing. Willy Tybur may have still hated the Paradis Eldians, but he loved the many and wanted for the many to survive. He knew he would almost certainly die but he was determined to unite people and declare war. Whatever it took, he would still continue. But even if he wanted the world to be safe, his willingness for genocide cannot be overlooked. He still has bloody hands, even if he has a mostly warm heart.
No one moves forward like Eren though. The world was stacked against him from the start, and for many that would mean they would follow their dream as morally as they could, or abandon it and embrace whatever they could to survive. Eren keeps his dream, but his mind is not clouded. The enemies in his path are literally 99.9% of the planet, of humanity. Even so, for what he loves he will spawn oceans of blood and fields of fire. He knows that morally it's wrong, and he doesn't see people as evil anymore. But he knows that those people would threaten those he cares about, and his freedom. And so he doesn't deviate from the path. This world decided that Eren would have a losing hand, but in order to win Eren decided to sever the hands of the other players and burn the deck. Eren's genocide is unfathomably vast, but none of us could dare say that, in his exact situation, we wouldn't do similar. We can easily claim it as outside viewers with a morality born of us in safety, but most of us would be Eren, or even Gabi, were we in that cruel world. We would kill to protect our loved ones if we had the power to, and especially if the world wanted them dead. We cannot claim to be above that until we see the same hell.
Eren is judged to be wrong by enemies and former allies alike because they hold their morals so firmly that the scope of death in Eren's wake is incomprehensible to them. The ends don't justify the means in their hearts. But this world doesn't care if its justified or not, or if people live or die. The world allows such cruelty and everyone outside Paradis allowed it to continue. They threw blades tipped with poison and hoped that their problems would end. But they created something with harder skin that could consume that poison and make it venom. The world made Eren, Marley made Eren, and so they should not be surprised that Eren aims only to unmake them. So many protags in other shows slay so much evil and kill all sorts of monsters that threaten what they love and we cheer for it. But in Attack on Titan, that is robbed from us. The monsters were masks, and behind them were humans we could understand, empathise with, and want peace with. But those humans happen to want us dead. They are not monsters, but they ARE enemies. And we as viewers struggle with that because we can't just decide they're evil and deserve death. Eren is slaying anyone in his path that threatens what he loves, but because they're not one-dimensionally evil anymore, it's wrong. Because it's the world, it's wrong. If we decided that 1000 years from now, all Germans deserved death for World War 2, could we say we were any different than Marleyans wanting to kill any and all Eldians? Would a human rise up and decide the rest of the world wasn't worth saving?
The monsters and evils we see in other shows, they're easy to paint as bad because they're against humanity. When the monsters ARE humanity, we pause. We doubt. Eren doesn't. He knows that everyone's lives are valid, but they WILL kill what he loves and for that they must be eliminated. I want to believe I am a pacifist, and that I would never kill. But if I walked a life like Eren, could I really uphold that? And if I did, would all I have to show for it be the corpses of all I love, piled up by people I understand?

You put a lot of realistic objectivity when it comes to the human condition and applied it to the world of AOT. It's hard to say we would truly walk the path of Eren since we were born in a world where freedom is high nigh but if we did.. it is feasible to think that would be the case, and even if we wouldn't be able to walk that exact path. We would most certainly in a collective feel the same drive and burning passion. Thank you for writing this articulate summarization, it opened my eyes even more than I thought was already established. I think this scene indicates that Eren did not see everything that will happen in his future memories, as shown through the memory shards, I suppose he only saw glimpses but not everything. He now knew that he cannot change the future so he's been going with the flow, that's why Sasha's death was a shock to him, because he never saw this future.

    • @shubhamvyas3192
      @shubhamvyas3192 2 года назад

      Yes, accurate.
Many people don't realize erens complexity doesn't come in because he saw the future completely.
But because he saw some parts of it.
When he realized sasha died he started showing emotions which he never did in s4.
The fact is that eren is depressed.
And most of his actions are actually selfish and not selfless.
For example chapter 131 clearly showed that protect paradis was one of his goals and more bigger goal was protecting his friends but even a bigger goal was to realize his own selfish vision of freedom which he saw in the future memories and that was the freedom panel in chapter 131.
His vision of freedom was a childish one. He was not aiming for physical freedom but a mental one.
He felt that outside world would be what was in armins book but it wasn't and thus he wished to wipe it all away.
He did wait to see if outside world doesn't attack em, but inside of his mind he was convinced because of the future memories he saw.
But even after chapter 131 panel, he couldn't be free because his definition of freedom is twisted. He thought that if he gets to visit outside world then he would be free but now outside world isn't what he dreamt of then wiping it away and making it a blank canvas would destroy the hate and shit and thus he will have freedom and visit with armin the outside world of their dreams. Which they did in chapter 131 and 139.
But as eren was getting bigger in the paths from child to adult, he was getting from normal to more sad and more sad and more depressed.
His adult version couldn't cope with what he was doing and thus he lost the will to live in chapter 131 last panel.
In chapter 139 he first lies to armin saying that he wanted them to be heroes but the reality is that he just wanted wanted to create a blank canvas of land and he will move forward for that selfish goal but they all can stop him.
He knew he was going to be stopped but he still moved forward because if he didn't then the future wouldn't happen.
But he did move forward which led to hange dying, and many of his friends turning into titans.
Thus indicating that he was unfree and free at the same time. He was fulfilling his desire but also it was set in stone for him.
It's confusing but interesting for erens character.
At the end, mikasa was able to cut her emotional dependency on eren and finally express her true love for him which she never could express earlier and that ymir also was able to cut her emotional dependency or rather separate her identity from her captor.
Both cases are different because mikasa case is of trauma bonding and love while for ymir it was Stockholm syndrome and her identity being a part of captors identity.
But both have similar emotions and feelings.
Ymir seeked that romantic connection which we saw in her backstory where 2 people were kissing and then we saw eren and mikasa kiss but right when eren is dying and thus dies.
Mikasa freed herself from her trauma but also found her love for eren which was a mental freedom for mikasa because she was able to make a choice to protect the lives of innocent people that she wanted to since she was a soldier.
She represented true embodiment of freedom in the sense that she freed herself from her mental trauma and also made a choice which was the hardest for anyone.
Erens mental psyche was disturbed, he couldn't even have the will to live and he just wanted to die but he still kept moving forward.
It's like how a drunk person regrets drinking but still drinks.
This is why eren is tragic.
Also why he is different from floch because eren showed empathy and knew that he was a piece of shit for doing all this just for his selfishness while he also wanted to protect his friends and the island in general.
It's like erwin who also had a selfish dream except erwin was able to remove his selfishness all the time while fulfilling his role as a commander who dreamt of bringing freedom to humanity.

At last, someone who understands the ideas behind Eren's character. A rights-based morality that is limited to the idea of freedom, life, and perhaps the right to self-defense as well. Many of the other analyses don't properly understand this.
The character assassination done against him in Season 4 is quite sad but I fully expected it to happen. That Isayama would cave to the majority of his fans, who've always hated Eren Jaeger, was apparent at the time. Eren, having a rights-based morality, would never assent to committing the Rumbling or even think of it as an option. Here's my theory. Isayama purposefully and subtly changed Eren's character over the timeskip from being an individualistic freedom-fighter, to being fully collectivistic and literally trampling the rights of others, in order to make it appear that people with rights-based moralities are secretly monsters who want to destroy the world. Supposedly Eren is one of those people, and supposedly living for individual rights leads to genocide, even though it's clear to me that his character was changed before he even thought to go there.
    Guys, we've been conned.

His entire goal was to realize a selfish vision of freedom in chapter 131.
He did want to protect the island and didn't want his friends be sacrficed but it was his own selfish goal to see a blank canvas of outside land because it didn't match the outside world he dreamt of in armins book.
This is why he turned into a kid in chapter 131

The problem with utilitarianism is it's central premise can easily be shifted in this context. Utilitarianism relies on the premise that all human life has value and thus helping the most human life is always the best choice. The problem is that humanity doesn't even consider Eldians as human they could arguably call them another species. If Eren accepts this claim then he could technically just apply Utilitarianism to Eldians as in what helps the most Eldians is the best choice.

I somewhat understand why people are against him, after all seeing millions of innocent people being slaughtered is never easy. However even if you hate or love him, people gotta admit that he is one of the best maincharacters out there... from his character development to his complexity, I seriously cannot think of anyone off the top of my head who comes even near eren.

But free will is literally complete bull shit anyway.Human is Human so war is inevitable no matter what, authority will still brainwash people sooner or later. There is no right solution to this whole thing:
If he succeeded in Rumble the whole planet which probably include almost all live on the surface of the Earth. And the Eldian repopulate the planet then so what now peace is temporarily but the cost for that is the destruction of everything and the cycle of suffering continued.Free will is total anarchy where anything is allow because that is true free will.

Hard choices are made in war. He's tired of being defensive and waiting for a genocide, and wants to instead fight. Eren is still very much a victim of his circumstances. I always love a good anti-hero.
