I have not had good luck with the new K-bar. I purchased this same knife after watching nutn's original video. I started to use it to split some firewood and the handle broke off. I was shocked this knife broke with such light use. The rat tail tang is very small and not super durable. K-bar did replace the knife however, I have no faith in it and would never trust it on an outdoor adventure.
Yes you should definitely check out the LateBoyScout video here on YT. Especially the answer ColdSteel sent him with the replacement after he broke it. Batoning is considered abuse by CS.
my trusty ka bar has been on every outdoor camping/hiking/hunting trip since 1995 and is still just as good if not better than when new..sports a razor sharp swedge for zipping open deer during field dressing and since 2000 has had a convex edge that has only required the slightest of maint. between trips.. given to me as a gift and while theres alot of cooler more whiz bang options its been a reliable companion and has even saved me alot of trouble and pain couple times.. on a hike in PA we were overland navigating up a very steep rocky but wooded hillside (50 deg angle) in about 18 inches of snow.. got really cold in the afternoon after being warm all day and the top of the snow crusted over on us about an inch of the top was ice and with packs weighing us down we wound up chopping our way up this steep hill with ka bars digging steps and fixing ropes ..totally sucked but we had to go up as down would have been too dangerous... ka bar for the win ! Ill take the weight and its little downsides for the stone reliability
The Cold Steel Recon Scout is the best overall outdoors knife ever created. I have an old one. It came with a nylon sheath but replaced it with a waterproof leather one. I also replaced the Kraton handle with a mylar handle I made myself. IMHO a great upgrade to an already great knife. I really like the idea of the Leatherneck. Can't wait to get my hands on one. Great review Nutn! Keep up the good work.
Thanks Nutnfancy for another great review, ever since ive found your channel i havent got any knife or outdoor product without watching your review on it. I cant wait to get this knife. Thanks again Nutn!!!!
Arrrrrrgh!!!! Just placed my order to KnifeWorks for the Leatherman while listening to you on a seperate sceen. Right as I hit the order button you go off onto how you would carry the other knive instead of the Leatherneck. Oh, well...I think I am going to love the Leatherneck. Add this to the many knives you have made me believe my life will not go on without adding to my collection. You have turned me into a true knife lover/collector.
after requesting this review last year, seeing it up on your channel made me so damn happy! Thank you Mr Nutnfancy, i absolutely love your videos, like... all of them!
For the money this looks like a good option. I'm very impressed to see such a good sheath supplied, if only Ontario would do this with their SP series knives.
I so want to still be a fan of cold steel. I currently own a complete collection of carbon v knives, 4 voyager, bushman large and small, cutlass, tomahawks and many many others. With that said I would not buy another cold steel knife. They have really let the consumer down over the past few years. I feel it is do largely to chasing larger profits. I am glad you like this knife! I have been requested to make a video of my collection, I might need to get around to it.
Not sure if my budget can withstand watching any more of your vids! Ordered a Leatherneck the first time I watched this vid. Got it and I love it. Have several other highly reviewed and rated knives, a Kahr PM9, various flashlights...oh, well...just keep up the great work. The Jeremiah Johnson series quickly became my all time favorites from you. Thanks.
I prefer the little bottles that are non aerosol. They sell them for about a dollar at walmart in the sporting goods section (at least at walmarts in Texas; usually near hunting stuff). The little bottle has a director spout that makes it easy to get into places like pivot screw! Hope it goes well!
I just ordered this knife (sk-5 version) from CutleryShoppe for $49, and got free shipping via nutnfancy discount code! So glad I scored one before it went away, and can't wait to add it to the collection! Thanks again for a grea review Nutn!
I hope the plastic in the handle keeps the tang from bending. My old kabar bent when I was digging a hole once. After that it just kept getting bent. Had to retire the thing... Thicker tang on the leatherneck! Awesome!!!
I had been on the fence about this knife but after watching your review, and the fact that they are not going to make this version anymore, I went ahead and ordered one, just got it today. love the way it feels in hand, cant wait to put to use next time I am up in the woods
@Davidbirtles1 Interesting, haven't seen it. I show heavy batoning here and it did great. Not sure what else to go on except my own experience. I broke a Recon Scout once upon a time, still like that knife. There's DEFINITELY different types of batoning. Going thru frozen or dense sappy, new wood might be a problem. Batoning they dead wood is normal use though.
I'm liking the looks of the wider tang as compared to the KA-BAR. The tang in my KA-BAR bent slightly while batonning recently. It was a very slight curve, but enough to place the blade at a noticeable angle to the grip and the butt cap came off (and I lost the retaining pin).
One time I got a live round jammed above the charging handle by the gas tube in my M4 and I tried every trick in the book even collapsing the stock and smacking it on the ground. And as I tried more and more the round just got pushed further into the rifle. As a last resort I drew my KA-BAR that I had on me and used it like a pry to get the round out and it worked like a charm. Sometimes that big heavy piece of steel comes in handy when it really counts. You will see that knife on my belt always
Great to see another classic TTKR again. The tang at the end of the handle appears to be so wide that it seems to be wider then the thinnest part of the handle.
i like that he says big knives don't suck. cause they don't. there is always a right tool for the job and sometimes they aren't right for all jobs, but they are very useful when you need one.
Nutnfancy in this review has the old FFG SK-5 steel version. New versions are hollow ground and made of 4116 Krupp steel, which makes them better all-terrain knives and allows them to take more abuse, but they won't hold an edge or wedge into things as well. Your call. I have the new Leatherneck in tanto point and I love mine.
I just pick up the Leatherneck it was about 50 bucks. For the price and quality you really can't beat it. I was surprise how balanced it feels in my hand I have not done any heavy testing on it yet - but so far so good.
I love your videos. Very honest, and mate due you punish your knives. Keep up the excellent work. Hope to come to America soon and check out those beautiful mountains. Absolutely fantastic. You are very lucky.
Thanks NutNFancy for the review. Bought this knife based on your review. I had seen, The late Boy Scouts, video and noticed he has broke both the Kabar LH Bowie and this Leatherneck, WoW! I have both and you have reviewed both. I think the FFG is a great cutter grind. Was able to snare the SK5 FFG if you havent figured that out and love the feel of this knife. I cant say enough about the sheath other than as good as my LMF. Great Knife, Great Review and Great price.
I was looking up the cold steel leatherman based on the desciption from the JJ video. STOP showing me awesome stuff! I can't afford to buy all this cool stuff.
It just seems like making the possibility of a serious injury higher , rather than lower. Because if your going to loose it, its most likely on a down stroke, and if you hit then let go the knife is snapping right back at you. then if you jerk your hand back as a reaction to dropping the knife or getting cut by it recoiling the knife will go the other way. Its like cramming a wolverine down your pants instead of letting it run around in the room your in.
I broke 2 Ka-Bar brand kabar's chopping and splitting some really sappy hard wood. From my use I will only trust my life to a survival knife that is completely full tang like the ESEE-6 or Buck Hoodlum. I do like to see that they widened the tang on the leatherneck!
They did it because of "overseas military contracts" (in their words) that required stainless steel. I personally like it, and I don't have to worry about it rusting. Holds an edge well, and one thing 4116 is great for is that you can get it extremely sharp.
actually in terms of collectibility, these FFG ones are because Cold Steel is about to dis continue it in favor of a saber grind (a la SRK) Leatherneck in 4116 Krupp steel. So these SK-5 versions could be considered colletible since they're gonna go away.
3in1 is a more general purpose, heavier oil. It's fine to use and will serve the same purpose, however, Remoil in my experience is a lighter oil, that won't be thick on your blade. It's also designed for firearms, which may or may not really mean anything, I can't really speak to that. All and all, 3in1 will work fine, but rem oil is just lighter and won't sludge up as much! Happy trails!
The official designation is the Navy MkII Utility/Fighter because, several fine American Knife manufacturers, during and sense WWII, produced the Navy MKII. Pal, Case, Ontario... I do think the new handle materials are better however, a great uncle of mine said he carried his RCC made MKII all over the Pacific. 3 amphibious assaults and crawling days on end through swamps. He still had his same RCC MKII when he passed away and it was still in great condition, for have done what it did for him.
Thanks for the info and thanks for the reply, i have noticed that i have to wipe grey sludge off my blades when doing heavy edge reforming, ill give the rem a try
Nutn, I think most of us either can't afford, or are just unwilling to spend several hundred dollars (or more) on a survival blade. There's always a kind of "give and take" between a given blade's features and cost, and the more you get, the more you spend. Having said that, if cost wasn't an issue, what is the one (no, Top Three) survival blades that you would take into the woods with you? I have many different survival blades, and I'm happy with them all, but what are your ULTIMATE blades?
I carried a Cold Steel SRK during my deployment to Iraq in 2005. It was destroyed when I was hit by a hand grenade. Luckily the pieces where returned to me with my other gear. I contacted Cold Steel to see about getting a replacement and was told twice I wouldn't be receiving a replacement or discount on another purchase because blast damage wasn't covered under their warranty. Won't buy another knife from them again. Another great video though.
@ghostie234 Seriously?! I did not know that. I will investigate and annotate the vid and sidebar if that's the case. Yeah, I would not rate this near as high if not FFG and in the 4116.
Glad you did this review. I wanted to get a Leatherneck anyhow, but I always feel better about making a purchase after I've seen that you've thoroughly thumped on the knife in question lol. Thanks a lot!
Going to pick up a CS Leatherneck in the near future. It seems to be a great knife, and the price is amazing. CS seems to be on point with their prices, and Cutlery Shoppe mark down at $50 is great.
Just so you know, Nutn, you basically got Ka-bar another sale. Snatched a Marine Combat off of Amazon for 40% off direct from Ka-Bar. Lovin' it so far!
You should have looked at the specs before buying. You got the 2012 version which has a sabre grind and is made of "4116 German Stainless" steel which is something like 440A. The version you are looking for is the Leatherneck-SF 2011 version in SK-5 high carbon steel.
Great Review! I have had the pleasure of chatting with Lynn Thompson, and have written reviews and endorsed many of his products. He is an awesome man, and always tries his best to bring the best to the consumers for a reasonable asking price (thus offshore manufacturing). Thanks for this review!
I saw a USMC-spec KaBar snap just past the finger guard back in the day. Granted it was being used as a throwing knife which is not what it was designed for, but the tang should have been thicker to handle such rough use/abuse. A rat-tail tang has no place on a combat blade... Semper Fi!
@KBar666 - continued - the idea was for them to provide some level of point fire for the troops storming the beach from ships and boats. However you can probally guess how effective that was....barely if at all.
I bought a leatherneck SF and when i got it, it was not full flat ground. I dont know if they changed the manufacture process or if its an manufacture error but just so you know, if you buy one of these it MIGHT NOT BE FULL FLAT GROUND. it looks more like a standard ka-bar.
I have one of the new 2012 4116 Krupp versions, the tanto. I really like it. CS changed it to Krupp because of military contracts that required stainless steel. I personally prefer saber or hollow grinds to FFG as well, so it suits me better than the original Leatherneck would.
wicked good review. got one right after watching the video and love it already. Cold Steel has been a great knife company to me and all thanks to your reviews. keep them and all your reviews coming. active duty navy and checking out what i missed while out to sea is a first when i get home. so thanks.
Havent watch the review yet but I already know that Im happy I bought this blade before Nutn's review came out on it. Good luck getting one now! lol. Keep the vids comin!
I was about to pick up a SOG seal team elite but didn't like the price and combo edge. This blade seems like a better option for my L.B.E. Thanks for the great info as always Nutn! You Rock!!!
I always wondered about the lanyards, I know they are to make it safer so that the knife wont go flying out of your hand and strike someone/something, but thats never been a concern for me... My point is if you loose grip on a knife while chopping It MIGHT hit someone, if you loose grip with a lanyard on it WILL come back at you at your wrist. it just seems like turning a possible injury into a probable one. And if your out in the woods, hell even your backyard a slice to the wrist is bad news
I was chatting with Cold Steel on Facebook after I saw that the 2012 Leatherneck will not be FFG. I told them that was the main feature that set their Ka-Bar style apart. Get the FFG while you can
Shouting at my computer? I threw it out the window and yelled it at my neighbor for christs sakes. lol. Leatherneck has been on my wishlist for a few months now. Nice review nutn.
@nutnfancy Looks like, at least at this snapshot of time, the ffg is still being advertised on Coldsteel's website for 89.99. Cant say I've heard anything to the affect of the ffg being discontinued though.
Just ordered this knife since it was 30-40 dollars cheaper (15 dollars cheaper for knife, 20 dollars cheaper for shipping) than the Ka-Bars I could find and is out of production. If I want a Ka-Bar I can always buy it later, but this one might be all gone.
Great review, Nutn. Any comments on Cold Steel's plan to change to saber ground 4116 later this year? Weight is supposed to go from 10.4 to 12.3 oz. too.
Were do all those nice cut logs, and one smaller nice cut log in the forest come from...all this batoning on all these videos. Every time I have been to the forest you end up burning really dry dead fall,no nice cut big logs, and one smaller nice cut log to be found. I think all the knife videos have batoning because it's fun!!
Hey nutn', perhaps the better cap was designed to go with, and be a supported by, the extra weight & size of the tang ? e.g. give it a better punch as a hammer....what say you ?
Hey love this video. I dont own any of those but i do have a frost cutlery replica of one and it has the classic wood look grip and is serrated on the top for about 2 inches from the hand guard. And it rocks the ground especially splitting wood.
great video and thanks for all the awesome reviews........ ever thought of trying the Ka-Bar mark 1. Its got the FFG that you like and it's made here in the states.
Please do an updated review on the D2 version!
Yes you should definitely check out the LateBoyScout video here on YT. Especially the answer ColdSteel sent him with the replacement after he broke it. Batoning is considered abuse by CS.

I picked one of these up a few weeks ago and was very impressed... Feels great in hand!
@wizzard84334 Correct. I will review a Tanto once in awhile.
I wish the kabar was a complete full tang instead of the tapered tang.
Thanks Nutnfancy for another great review, ever since ive found your channel i havent got any knife or outdoor product without watching your review on it. I cant wait to get this knife. Thanks again Nutn!!!!
@jpaho That is correct from my information as well, still SK-5
Think i might pick up the new D2 version that cold steel recently put out.
Arrrrrrgh!!!! Just placed my order to KnifeWorks for the Leatherman while listening to you on a seperate sceen. This is how a knofe review should be done!!!! Great work Nutn.

@beactivelife That's one of my favorite high value thumping knives, reviewed here in 2008.
@Pagansdad Yeah me too. The blade shape and FFG on this one rule.
I think all the knife companies make the knives exactly as Nutnfancy likes them so he will praise it and everyone will buy it.
Holy cow I was waiting for this review
Great job nutn

Just want to say great vid as always sir. Keep them coming! Always very in depth and informative.
I just pick up the Leatherneck it was about 50 bucks. For the price and quality you really can't beat it. I was surprise how balanced it feels in my hand I have not done any heavy testing on it yet - but so far so good.
@greenjibbles I don't have any opinions or experience with it sorry. Might be good and price seems right.
I love your videos. Very honest, and mate due you punish your knives. Keep up the excellent work. Hope to come to America soon and check out those beautiful mountains. Absolutely fantastic. You are very lucky.
Just got a new cold steel catalog today and these were on the front cover!
@Dan39991 Good comment
Was actually looking through your Cold Steel reviews and saw this new one. Awesome.
When you mentioned AAFES, I had a flash of nostalgia.
Just ordered a Ka-bar in black, had to have the original and still would like to see the cold steel proven in a military roll.
I was looking up the cold steel leatherman based on the desciption from the JJ video. STOP showing me awesome stuff! I can't afford to buy all this cool stuff.
couldn't agree more man! I truly love my SK-5 version too! I totally wish they weren't getting rid of it but glad I got it before it's gone!
My K-BAR is over 60 years old and the leather is fine and the knife is well used.
actually in terms of collectibility, these FFG ones are because Cold Steel is about to dis continue it in favor of a saber grind (a la SRK) Leatherneck in 4116 Krupp steel. So these SK-5 versions could be considered colletible since they're gonna go away.

Happy trails!
I've hacked small trees down with my Leatherneck Tanto. Didn't take more than 3 to 4 swings. I was impressed.
@ghostie234 the leather neck is 90 retail its only 50 on sale the buck will probobly be discounted to that at some point
The official designation is the Navy MkII Utility/Fighter because, several fine American Knife manufacturers, during and sense WWII, produced the Navy MKII. Pal, Case, Ontario...

I just checked the Cold Steel web site and they still make it in SK-5 high carbon steel and FFG.
Recon Tanto seems like the overall better option to me if you compare the two side by side. Unless your not a big fan of the Tanto style blade.
WOW!! Awesome Reviews, Awesome Knives, and Awesome Music!! You ROCK Bro, keep up the outstanding work!!!!!!
Good eye! Thanks for catching that...I fixed it. -- Veri
Thanks for this review!

the idea was for them to provide some level of point fire for the troops storming the beach from ships and boats. However you can probally guess how effective that was....barely if at all.
The blade shape on that Leatherneck is very similar to that of the Kabar Large Heavy Bowie.
Havent watch the review yet but I already know that Im happy I bought this blade before Nutn's review came out on it. Good luck getting one now! lol. Keep the vids comin!
Love the choil on the CS! Don't like the edge being ground right up to a flat part like the traditional K-BAR or most knives.
Nutnfancy kicks ass! another great knife review! Keep up the good work buddy!
Get the FFG while you can
Just got mine today. So glad I scored on the SK-5 FFG version. Big mistake by Cold Steel to take away the only FFG Ka-Bar on the market
Thats the new Leatherneck. Look for the Leatherneck SF in SK-5 steel, thats the FFG one. Amazon still has it so does knifecenter.
No drainage holes in those sheaths. Think I'd want to add one myself.
@Davidbirtles1 he did an update video, it was replaced by cold steel because they DID determine that it was a tempering issue.
Just ordered this knife since it was 30-40 dollars cheaper (15 dollars cheaper for knife, 20 dollars cheaper for shipping) than the Ka-Bars I could find and is out of production. If I want a Ka-Bar I can always buy it later, but this one might be all gone.
@ROADDAWGTACTICAL You can take off the belt attachment with a screwdriver and flip it to the other side so yes.
I served in the Balkans War too, Afghanistan, Iraq. I love my KA-BAR!! Along with my M9 Bayonet!
Great review, Nutn. Any comments on Cold Steel's plan to change to saber ground 4116 later this year? Weight is supposed to go from 10.4 to 12.3 oz. too.
On the CutleryShoppe site, it says that this knife is recommended by (drumroll) NUTNFANCY! And surprise, you sold them out. Well done.
another excellent knife from cs just watched a vid on these with damage rto blade after hard use though great video again
Please do a review of the cold steel survival edge
i just got one, the ffg version but its bent calling cold steel tomorrow
I dig the sheath on that knife , For the price its a must.
Its got the FFG that you like and it's made here in the states.
the music at the start gets me excited.
