Man, I love Cold Steel, they make great knives. Also, their sheaths are amazing, I mount my Recon Tanto upside down on my left packstrap so that I reach across and draw it with my right hand, works great for me. I have never had it even come close to falling out, and I have been known to jump off of rather high rocks and things like that, so I would have to say that it isn't coming out! Oh yeah, and my Recon Tanto is a Carbon V that they had some extra's of a few years ago.
I have this knife as well as the KaBar. It a little heavy in the handle because it has a more robust tang. Different grind than a KaBar. It's probably a better choice if you're going into a very wet environment. Thicker blade near the tip, it also doesn't have the tip clip point.
just got mine this weekend when I went to the Cold Steel challenge 2011. It was on sale for 60, the guy was cool enough to give it to me for 55. thanks for the review sir
Great review! I came very close to buying one this week. Grabbed a Gladius Machete instead. Oh well, I will get one with my next order. Cold Steel has come out with some great products for 2011.
I have a few Ka-Bars and I have both leathernecks (and like 4 of the special limited green one). I prefer the cold steel any day… just wish we could get a leather handle on the leatherneck.
Excellent first look LBS! leatherneck im not sure on but it cld derive from 'bootneck' the slang term for a Royal Marine which comes from RM's cutting up leather boots and wearing it like a neckbrace to stop sailors (who where going to mutiny) cutting their throat while they guarded officers on board sailing ships as well as sword cuts from enemy boarders. I love the look of that blade and thats a sweet price! thank you LBS for the first look, i want one! have a top weekend, best wishes bro
Does anyone know where i can find a SK-5 version? Been looking everywhere for it and cannot find it. Yes i know they're discontinued but there has to be at least one out there.
Every 0311 loves the Kabar but if you've ever bent the guard or the skinny little rat tail tang on one of them, you realize they aren't perfect. The reason the Leatherneck SF balances more rearward is because there is more mass in the thicker and stronger tang and guard. The Cold Steel is a vast improvement over the classic Kabar in that respect, and in the factory sheath.
I usually prefer un-coated blades, but for this price range it's hard to complain--they're pretty much all coated from the factory, which I suppose makes sense for a military knife. The knife may work even better for camp use with the upper guard ground off. I always wanted the kraton handled Ka-Bar with molded sheath (I've got the leather handle/sheath version) for outdoors use, but I have a hard time getting my Ka-Bars as shard as I would like them to be--the steel is great, the grind is just
Awsome review. Good video, great looking blade. I have had my eye on this one too. You just made up for selling out to bulkammo. Hope u enjoy the knife. May b post a chapter 2 after you put some use into it?
Leatherneck is derived from the leather collar on there old uniform jackets. The leather was to protect there neck from sabre and other edged weapon attacks.
I own a kabar and this knife I actually like the leatherneck sf more. absolute great knife and I'm not scared to use it cause it cost $150 less compared to my kabar 1221
I have the leatherneck and I love it. Its a k bar on steroids. Stays on my side along with my ruger sp101 357 mag. It comes razor sharp and it sharpens Pritty good. 🙏 ✝ 👪 🔫 🔪 🇺🇸 ☺👍
KA-BAR the company was not the first to produce the Marine fighting knife. Camillius produced the design originally but Marines in WW2 commonly called them KA-BAR, because like most things during the time alot more than one company produced one product. Thats why you have Jeeps that were made by Ford. Union Cutlery put their trademark"KA-BAR" on the sides of the knives. Union Cutlery changed their name to KA-BAR officially ten years later. Camillius also produced Cold Steel knives
Hey mate can u please answer this? im gonna buy this knife my self, im from Denmark, and on the site im looking on it says: "German 4116 Stainless" and not "SK-5 High Carbon" :S is it the same or is the "German 4116 Stainless" some cheap shit ? :O
@TheLateBoyScout i dont mind it eather it does look cool. But sk5 is a high carbon tool steel and not to rust resitent. Not that i mind puting a little oil on it evry now and then but id rather not have to.
@wcropp1 rather obtuse, and hard to get a truly sharp edge on, at least with my skills (don't have that problem with more acutely ground blades). I like that the swedge is unsharpened (for both legal and utility reasons--easy enough to sharpen if you want a fighter). The metal buttcap on the Ka-Bars was always a plus--if this knife has a tougher one, all the better, and the tang definitely looks wider. The Ka-Bar is hard to beat and this knife seems to improve on an already great design. Thanks.
Kabar guard digs into your hand and handle needs it side sanding flat, or it turns in the hand. The difference is alot , its flmatground for one. The grip is ok but i don't get paid for advertising cold steel. Why do we need their name in handle, spoils the look for one. Makes the knife look cheap.
If you baton with this knife the Finish Will come off Just so you know. I have a video of it coming its prepossessing right now Of me batoning with it And the finish coming off
when is saw this review i was like jaaay i am gonna buy this knife and when i saw the fail vid i was like aahw crap because in my country this knife iss 110 dollars

that's what I told people to do with the K-bar's - sand down the leather grip on both sides for a better grip! Cold Steel got it right again
Damn I want this knife! I don't own any knifes but this might be my first. Great video cuzin
just got mine this weekend when I went to the Cold Steel challenge 2011. It was on sale for 60, the guy was cool enough to give it to me for 55.
thanks for the review sir
В България цената е много висока 120 $. Но си поръчах един. Харесва ми.
I've been wanting this knife when I saw it on Special Projects page! Want all the more now. LOL! Great review my friend.
Great review! I came very close to buying one this week. Grabbed a Gladius Machete instead. Oh well, I will get one with my next order. Cold Steel has come out with some great products for 2011.
Great all around knife , nice review .For camp knife we use to grind the top hilt off so we could more easily choke up on the blade.
That makes sense. Also good for when you skin animals..
Won't slice up the meat when you are skinning.
mine was back ordered for 2 months. it is a fine unit from the tip of he blade to the secure-ex sheath!!
Please explain the "dismal update", I just ordered one.....damn it!
@TheLateBoyScout do u have any knife sharping videos?
I would think the extra weight on the kabar could be a good thing for impact.
I would like to see it with a high saber grind not a full flat grind. I do like the improved tang
I got mine today!!!i love the feal of it. Nice sturdy feel.
which is the name of the 4th knife at min 11:57 ?
+Nils M. kabar bk7
I have a few Ka-Bars and I have both leathernecks (and like 4 of the special limited green one). I prefer the cold steel any day… just wish we could get a leather handle on the leatherneck.
I just bought the D2 version with a hollow grind. Love it
great looking knife, can anyone tell me the height (top to bottom) of the sheath is???

Thanks for sharing! I'd love to see this knife field tested ...
Can you do a food prep vid with this knife. How is the flat grind version at cutting vegetables?
Does anyone know where i can find a SK-5 version? Been looking everywhere for it and cannot find it. Yes i know they're discontinued but there has to be at least one out there.
whats the angle of the blade plz ?

I also love how they flatend the handle so you could tie it to a big stick to have for a spear on your walking stick. ☺
This guy sounds to much like Nutnfancy!
LMMFAO
nailed itLOL!!!!
Including going so far as to use the catalog as part of his intro.
this reminds me of nutnfancy
Even sounds like him. Just needs to replace “guys” with “dudes”
is the best fighting knife

Black coated knives got their coat scratched and removed after some use.
when is saw this review i was like jaaay i am gonna buy this knife and when i saw the fail vid i was like aahw crap because in my country this knife iss 110 dollars
hmmmm...well it's clear that this knife is not influence by the kabar at all
nice review i like how you act like nutnfancy to make fun of him lol
Great review, but I have to say, the way this guy talks/acts just irritates the hell out of me
BTW your review is fucking awesome :D
Remember u don't get a good knife 4 a few dollars... U get what u pay 4!!
You have soft hands. Not the hands of a warrior who uses this knife. And you were dismayed by dust on your blade. Sad.
It looks like a useable knife, but to me it looks cheap. Prove me other wise
made in taiwan))
dude that SRK looks fake
I would think the extra weight on the kabar could be a good thing for impact.
