- A Soviet-Cuban two-part feature film directed by Mikhail Kalatozov, released in 1964. The film was shot after the triumph of the Cuban revolution, the advent of the socialist regime in Cuba, and allied relations between Cuba and the USSR.
Plot-wise, it consists of four unrelated novellas that tell the story of the Cubans fighting against "American oppressors" to turn their country into the Island of Liberty. In the 1960s, due to the rise of socialist ideals, the theme of revolution became relevant both for Soviet and Western cinema.
The film is made on a high professional level, primarily due to the innovations of DP Sergey Urusevsky and his crew. This was the last time Urusevsky, and director Kalatozov worked together. The films’s production was challenging in regards to staging, camerawork, intraframe editing, hand-held shooting for creating dynamic scenes using a hand-held camera in motion and transferring it from hand to hand, using specially made engineering structures, etc.
The film was shot between 1963 and 1964 with a considerable support from the Soviet and Cuban authorities during one of the most strained episodes of the Cold War - the Cuban Missile Crisis, the US blockade of the island, and the difficult economic situation in Cuba.

Una maldita obra maestra. Sean socialistas o de izquierda o no, tienen que verla, es de las películas mejores filmadas de la historia del cine. Impresionante. Si la hubiera visto Orson Welles, el hubiera llorado.

Because by the mid-1990s, when Scorsese dug up this forgotten movie with a clearly propagandistic plot and ideological anti-American clichés, one was already well aware of the utter failure of Cuba after the 1959 coup.
Even if one claims that Scorsese was attracted primarily by the unique cinematography of the movie, this does not justify him ignoring the content. This was a moral failure.
What an amazing film. The camera work is so fluid throughout. The funeral scene is a real highlight.
Gran película¡¡¡ Desde las condiciones en que se fraguó la revolución cubana, el sufrimiento de la gente, la indignidad de Batista y sus sicarios, la prepotencia USA.... ¿Que salida tenía el pueblo si no tomar las armas?. Durante decenios ha soportado el bloqueo americano, puede que hoy las condiciones deberían cambiar, pero se lo ponen francamente difícil. Mia deseos para el pueblo cubano son que encuentre un futuro digno, democrático y en paz. Y todas las naciones del mundo colaboren en ese propósito. El film, técnicamente, y argumentalmente es una revelación. Obra imprescindible para cinéfilos, que fuerza y sentimiento expresa.
La culpa es completamente con la dictadura de mas de 60 años que tiene el pueblo cubano con hambre y desesperados por cambio. Millones de dólares entran a Cuba desde de EEUU todo los años. Lo mejor que puede pasar es acabar con el embargo para que la dictadura ya no tenga excusa por causar la miseria que causan mientras Canel y los Castro viven como reyes.

I love Soy Cuba (I Am Cuba)! It's an unpolished, faceted film with beautiful cinematography. There are noticeable flaws but that's part of the charm. Thank you, Mikhail Kalatozov and Martin Scorcese!
Que maravilha! _Eu sou Cuba_ foi escrito pelo Evtuschenko, o poeta russo que recitava nas universidades mundo afora nos anos 60/70 e que inspirou o poeta catarinense Lindolf Bell (da Catequese Poética) a fazer o mesmo e a levar toda uma geração estudantil a se apaixonar por poesia. A minha, inclusive. Pude conhecé-lo aqui na UnB, dando palestra e recitando os poemas dele, na tribuna do auditório da reitoria. Que grata surpresa saber da mão dele no roteiro desse filme, deslumbrante em todos os aspectos ("Cuba, que linda es Cuba"...). E Rússia soviética deixando esse registro precioso, uma obra-prima, pra louvar a Ilha da Revolução. Obrigada, mais uma vez, Igor e galera do CPC-UMES.

That's how dubbing was usually done in the past. You would typically have foreign movies (here in Spanish) with a voice over for domestic audiences (Russian, in this case).
