This was wonderful, to hear about their struggles and their pushing thru to accomplishments. I have been married for 30 years and we worked together for many years. I believe that our relationship was made stronger because we both chose to never give up. You two are a beautiful couple, and your farm looks amazing. Never give up on your dreams and your partner.

It says how much you admire and love each other, and I know having been with my wife since high school and spent more than half my life with someone I’ve known for so long you only grow stronger... These two are amazing! Such an inspiration for any young couple looking to start their own business, not just market gardening. To see and hear how they work their relationship around the business is wonderful. Any self run business requires full commitment from both partners, otherwise it won't work. One person might try hard to run it all along for years, but the disdain towards the goals will become so burdensome that it's bound to fail, IMO. This is a huge lesson for homesteaders. If the whole family isn't engaged, it'll be a battle all the time.

My wife and I have been in business together for past 20 years she is the chef and I out front, maintenance plus roustabout, this little separation at work site helps greatly, but ultimately you both have to plan, agree on direction and who is responsible for what then execute with regular communication, may God bless you as he has us.

    • @davebox588

I could never understand thumbs downs for this kind of video either, until I accidently hit thumbs down instead of up. Like me, there are people with slightly defective vision who maybe don't notice that they've done it. I could be wrong of course, but it's a remarkable video about an amazing couple, so believing the down votes are mistakes helps balance my waning faith in humanity.

Thick plastic strips floor to ceiling in the cooler doorway allows you to keep it open till you are finished processing. Also you may consider a few woofers until you can employ someone. Juicing is so popular here in the US. That could be another sale for your produce. Kale, Ginger, Apples, Carrots, Chard, Celery... Good Nature juice presses are helping individuals start juicing business around the world. Just a few ideas! 🌱❤️

I was really touched about your story, especially "work - Home" balance and how you are handling your relationship. The biggest win you have is that both of you love what you are doing. hi Richard! Thanks for the great Interview.
You asked how the other family businesses are dealing with relationships - for me personally a very interesting question. Only thing I can say, that through years and years of not dealing with issues and the relationship between my parents, the whole farm business (40 years now, founded by my father) and the family is hopelessly destroyed.
So I would find it really great if you could maybe work to integrate that question in your RUclips-Videos or other ways - I think many many people would find that really interesting with a focus on farms :)
Keep up your great work and have a good time,Konrad

Again, I find I’m both amazed and touched in how timely these videos and among the many additional activities that have been available to observe through your efforts, Richard....ET AL!
As it happens I grew up in a family of businesses and start-ups, though not in farming or agriculture, the considerations, challenges and conflicts, if you will, are very much the same. I.e., we lived, work and developed together in business, family and in our individual skill-sets right along with the developments and transitions necessary as things rolled out, so to speak.
Once again, I find the people and the endeavors to be both fascinating and inspiring to “feed” an evolving scope of activity and in stepping up to the demands of the contexts they face and are “digging” in to it all in driving these developments. Kudos....... as this is most valuable to have access to and on so many levels. I find I’m deeply heartened to see that people are ready and stepping up to the capacities in complexity in the development of the projects let alone the systems and operations that evolve through these processes. Too, the value in coming to understand that as these projects are coming together that its often Not identified perfection, especially before hand, but one of tenacity, focus and the incredible power and effect of Actions that drives so much in all you and these people are engaging in Life. I’m seeing, farming, food, community and so much more are looking so promising against so much else that goes on in the world at this time.
Some thing I continue to hear mentioned again and again here is the value and potential of the connections, networks and resource that that becomes so much a part of how the projects can move forward at such low investment or overhead financially. Personally, I’m seeing even great potential in how these networks and resources can bring even more as the groups of people and farms are coming together. For example, where I am here in California, there are so many older farms, some no longer in production or in operations as farms..... the potential in connecting farmers and new farmers with these older facilities and their owners can prove of great value and move along with what has perhaps been stalled or left to wither as time progresses......... in addition the potential in keeping costs much lower in taking advantage of so much work that is still in place , just waiting for the next farmers to take up only to find that some of the results of work previously are already in place...... i.e. physical facilities, educated and motivated markets etc........
I look forward to that time when the opportunity to be face to face and expand on all these subjects can happen as I am more certain as each day passes that this is a path that I am already on and building into a future with beyond what I already do and have done.
Finally, for now, Please accept my humblest appreciation for all you are doing and driving with this much needed scope of activity.

Very much interested in the scope of planning, accounting, projections (target and budgeting) and costing/funding sheets that would also establish a scope of language and common experiences to develop further from.... so, yes, absolutely interested.
So exciting to see this meeting taking place, how so much comes together with good team and the planning and how it begins. BTW, been there on the end of day (bedtime) efforts to talk and connect (fighting) having some good tools on this really helps and keeps energy where it makes the most benefit. Home/work, relationships and the complexity therein while also stepping into the unknown and in taking on whats new can be very challenging. I’m speaking from growing up in family business and that of growing and managing my own businesses in years passed. One powerful tool in communications and how different perspectives become integrated is a model “ Touchstones”.
Thank you for all your efforts here as its so incredibly valuable at any level of development. Much appreciated!

Apologies for coming to this so late in the conversation. Have really enjoyed the whole tour Richard, thank you. Listening to this focused & generative young couple, two things occurred to me to perhaps add to ideas for winter cogitation.
First, Re: Hare/Rabbit Problem. Might be worthwhile to look into adding a Terrier to the team. Or better yet ...hire a trained one to visit. I've heard of Rat Terrier owners, for example, who come out with their dogs & clear your fields. Saw film footage of it once & boy was it impressive. A remarkably merciful kill, as the dogs quickly break the neck.
Second, Re: Buying a golf cart to speed in-row harvesting into crates as-you-go. Perhaps worth thinking about Carting or "Drafting" with a dog. A dog-pulled cart can be homemade to fit your row width & if the right dog is matched to that job, with some training (a great task to work on in winter), you might well discover a very dedicated 3rd member for your workforce.

Re: Using Dogs ~ Really not as silly or anachronistic as it may first sound. But it does mean matching the right dog to the job, for it to be more solution than a new set of problems. Would not try a Terrier for carting, for example. Or any herding breed either, at least not those known to need high activity. A high energy herder would likely be bored by a human's pace moving down the aisle. I'd look for a young trainable sturdy dog, known to have good heat tolerance (for summer working conditions, no sled dogs), from a breed known to be patient, mellow & attentive to Owner.
Lots of info online about making carts & harnesses, & how to train a dog for drafting... And really, it's just another of the farm jobs that dogs did for thousands of years & those dormant skills wait to be tapped. Given the chance, they joyfully jump off the couch to be by our side & join in our labors.

At about 35.00 you talk about online training in excel sheets for production planning - that sounds very interesting! I would really like to have some insight on production planning. Hope Anders will go forward with his courses!
