Julia Mossbridge - How Humans Differ from Other Animals

  • Physically, humans and animals seem similar. Mentally, humans seem so superior. What's so special about human nature? Language? Culture? Compare brain structures and functions of humans and animals. Human brains have advantages, in complexity and capacity of association for example, but are they sufficient to account for the vast superiority of human mentality?

    I had to watch this 4 times because it's so thought provoking I was reeling, and I kept missing what she was saying. The whole interview from start to finish was a revelation.
    So.. our cultural mileiu dominates our behaviour. The world _that we've created_ around our offspring is the driving force of our consciousness-driven intellect. As society developed, increasing in complexity, the human mind adapted to it, favouring conscious thought processes. And it takes so long to comprehend things like language that we evolved this extended period of neoplasticity. Whereas wild animals are able to operate almost entirely on an instinctive level because the world around them isn't constantly changing like human society does.

    Due to our uniquely long developmental time course, we can learn much more than other species about our culture, language and so on. This is certainly ONE important aspect in which we differ from other animals, but surely not THE distinctive characteristics, which is our capacity for abstraction, i.e. our conceptual faculty. I’m surprised that they didn’t even mention it. This fact is however crucial to this discussion. For example, in what way our uniquely long developmental time course influence our conceptual faculty, etc.

    • @commodoor6549
      @commodoor6549 2 года назад

      The long developmental time is baked into the conversation about abstraction. The rostrolateral prefrontal cortex (RLPFC), which develops from birth and through early childhood, is thought to play a critical role in abstraction.

    Why does human consciousness get more disconnected from free will than other animals and all physical reality? Is something else separating humanity from free will and consciousness trying to reconnect to free will, or is human consciousness both separating and attempting to connect with free will?

      Dogs are the product of eugenics. They have been selected to be beautiful to look at and to have a beautiful nature. That today's dogs are so cool is ultimately a credit to the judgement of people in the past who said, "I like *that* one", and also to most people treating their pet dogs more kindly than in the past.

    The difference between humans and the rest of the animal kingdom is very simple and direct. Animals are conscious because they are sentient; they are sentient because they react to sensations. Humans are also sentient, but we are also sapient and no other animal is sapient. Sapient means humans can think conceptually, with words. Animals can think perceptually, meaning without words. We humans are animals and can think perceptually, which means acting without thinking, like when playing basketball, gardening, playing a piano, recognizing a familiar face, etc., etc, etc.

    I’ve watched your videos for a while now, and they are always very thought provoking, but I just wonder whether you are simply gathering different opinions as opposed to getting “closer to truth”. I suppose there really is no way to tell whether these opinions are getting us closer to truth or not. It definitely doesn’t seem as though you feel any closer to truth by the end of any of your videos. Hopefully I don’t come across as being critical. I appreciate and enjoy your channel for sure.

    Humans differ mainly in that their efforts are directed to diverting energy and temporarily delaying the law of thermodynamics and increased entropy. Most other animals go with the natural flow of energy and follow instinctive but only temporary efforts such as nest building. Humans strive towards more permanent lasting monuments to their activity to survive by using their facility of symbolic thinking, imagination and systematic investigation and use of natural laws and application of that knowledge in controlling energy flow. Necessary because we are naked, have relatively few helpless young needing long nurturing and apprenticeship periods. Without the facility of our unique brains we could not survive as long as we have as a species. The need seems less for less long lived organisms. If we compare ourselves to similarly long lived animals such as elephants, some birds then it becomes clearer. Most other animals opt for shorter life rapid life cycle larger broods to maintain the species. The difference is less biological than how we can use what we have been equipped with to overcome our obvious weaknesses and vulnerabilities.
    That said are we as successful as say dragonflies- probably not since they have survived in much the same way since carboniferous times
    We survive in the short term by idea generation but there is no natural selection process for ideas- everything is experimental. One bad idea could shorten our life as a species and wipe us out overnight.

  • @dungteller367
    @dungteller367 3 года назад +1

    Another perspective. Since humans are claiming the top of the line of the species it seems even more perplexing that we've poisoned our habitat, killed over a billion in wars, starvation took millions more and we threaten our very survival in many ways. Perhaps we are totally wrong about our place in nature. Our view is that we are separate when in fact we are not separate the division arises in our minds not in the actual world. This is just an opinion I am not claiming to know.

    Humans have a long childhood. Maybe we should work on making it even longer. This might increase our abilities to remain optimistic, innovative, and, most of all, our abilities as universal explainers. Humans are problem solvers. We are the only animals capable of understanding the world, and thus, capable of transforming the world. Biological evolution is severely limited. There are no such limits in cultural evolution and we are capable of an infinity of progress.

      @@itheuserfirst3186 That's true, my biology teacher said once (upon a time) that it is false to see the tiger in the forest as free, he doesn't control it's environment. But imho it's more important now, to have a sens about what we have in common with animals, for example as Nietzsche said, humanity has a character, that was formed through the prehistoric times. We are bound to nature more than we think, despite all idealism, meaning we don't control our behavior, even if we control our environment. We are as animals, not products of mind but of evolution, blind animal instinct. We should not forget that or minimize it.... We cannot do everything we would like to, because of what we are.

Dolphins do not reproduce as successfully as human beings, and they cannot control their environment to the degree that humans can. Dolphins cannot leave the planet. Finally, dolphins are at the mercy of humans, not the other way around. Humans' unique intelligence is a real thing, but we are definitely not separate from the natural world, and thinking so will cost us dearly.
