From a game design standpoint, I would agree, but then we wouldn't get hilarious anti-softlock minigames. Honestly, it's the softlocks themselves that are bad game design. If your level is well designed and not a troll level, then a player should never need an option to restart from the checkpoint. Troll levels are a bit different, and I'm honestly surprised there's no specific tag for them (or for kaizo levels), as they're definitely niche and not something everyone would want to play. Troll levels have their own set of rules for good design, which in itself is a good indication that they should probably have their own tag, as they're targeting a vastly different audience.

I was speed running a pretty easy level once and when I got WR it was gone. Sometimes I'll upload sections of a level I'm working on just to see if people take more deaths than I'd like in a particular section but I try to make a point to say I plan to delete the level
>Vertically moving Thwomp "How did he do that?" I think it's just an effect of Night-Plains. All enemies and Powerups behave in "odd" ways. Too many specific ways to condense in a RUclips post. I reccomend going into maker and just experimenting.
@New Super Mario Bah Most maps, you can make it so the Thwomp "attacks" either left, right or straight down. On Night-Plains, Thwomps will move as if "aiming" to get the player in their range. IE: A Thwomp set to attack right will drift up or down towards Mario. When Mario is level, they slam sideways as normal.
You can 300% fit them all in a comment: •Boos only chase you when you look at them •Stretches stop moving when you look at them •Boo Buddies chase you when you look away, and stop spinning when you look at them •Thwomps slide towards you when you look away, downward ones sliding sideways & sideways ones sliding vertically •Chomp's chains are longer, both chained and unchained •Goombas & Wigglers behave like they're underwater •Stiletto Goombas' sound effects are distorted •Pokeys behave like underwater Wigglers •Super Mushrooms & Big Mushrooms bounce away from you •Fire Flowers slide away from you, hoping over obstacles •Super Leaves fall upwards •Cape Feathers fall slower and make larger swoops •Propeller Mushrooms inch away diagonally and then fly away •1-Up Mushrooms become rotten
The reason Ryu couldn't find the course maker was almost definetly because Nintendo had deleted him. Probably because the Maker was using glitches in his level.
@@Minecxt I think the glitch is where you could stand on an invisible block in the door after you got the Tanuki Tail. Or it could have been in a behind the scenes piece making some of the mechanics work.
If you are wondering how he did this - he created a troll level, then used the MM2 API to run a check, the data of when you hit the final pole/block is recorded as a clear at that exact pixel, he created a bot (most likely in Node.js) to constantly run a check on whether the level has been cleared, and then once the data is sent that it's cleared, the bot deletes the account. Therefore being a 1 time play level. Pretty clever to do something like this.

I don't know why you make a soft lock maze, it's not fun to play/watch. In my opinion it's better to have an ultra super complicated anti soft lock than actual soft lock.
Yeah, better a forced death area that takes a good 10-15 seconds to kill yourself, than a forced restart area. Longer than 10-15 seconds gets tedious the 3-99th time.
I remember there was a guy here, on YT, that uploaded a video on how to make a "combination lock" on SMM2, in which you had to try random numbers until you got the 9 DIGIT CODE to pass the level. If you failed, you got soft locked. The level had no hints as to which were the numbers, or anything like that. I was livid.

Softlocks should be used very sparingly. To use more than 1 in a level is already too much. Especially a troll level, with many other trolls already in place. But let's be honest, a couple of the trolls used in this level were quite smart.. I don't think he needed the softlocks, honestly. Level was already pretty good for a troll level. The delete-if-beaten was just the cherry on top.
