- The one and only Ewa Podleś singing Arsace's second act aria In Sì Barbara Sciagura from Gioachino Rossini's final Italian opera Semiramide written in 1823. This video is from a November 1992 performance in Venice with La Fenice Opera Orchestra and Chorus conduced by Henry Lewis and Mariella Devia singing the title role. If you check the documentary about Marilyn Horne on my channel and also Lucia Valentini Terrani performance in this opera, you might notice that all three singers appear to be wearing the exact same costume. :) Anyhow, Arsace is known as one of the most dificult roles in the operatic repertoire as it requires a truely dramatic contralto / mezzo-sorpano voice of great agility which is a rear feat indeed. IMHO, Podleś fits the bill perfectly and outshines pretty much everyone who has ever sung this role... Except for maybe General Horne. :)

RIP, grandissima Ewa!
Splendida! Mi fa amare ancora di più Rossini!
adoro! sempre e comunque!
Elle est absolument sublime!!!!
Superb!
@Sshelly34213 She's a contralto with an unusually vast vocal range, going from baritonal depths right to the soprano high C. She has sung roles belonging both to the mezzo and the contralto fach, yet her middle range, the part of the voice she is most comfortable in, sits in the contralto range.
Are you sure? Her best notes are always the highest ones.
One of the last great mezzos
The one time I'm happy to see this phrase lol. Brava Podles~!
Yes, I understand your point, although I must add, Podles does sound dark enough to me. What is putting you off track, I think, might be the fact that she has these ridiculously piercing higher register that sort of diminishes the impression of a contralto in the traditional sense of the word. Also, a few suggestions. Check out Marijana Mijanovic, Nathalie Stutzmann and Aafje Heynis. Some less dark then the others, but all very fine singers that shouldn't be missed.
Franco Fagioli's performance is very interesting.
