    I really appreciate GTE because the analysis is more directly relevant to the kinds of games I play than the analysis of, like, Carlsen-Nepo. It's fun to watch analysis of high-level chess, but the tactics there are so far beyond what I can follow that it barely helps my game. Seeing shit like this, though, where Gotham is like, "Okay, you win by this forced simplification, it's not the best, but it makes things easier if you're 900" - yeah, that's what I need.

    Not gonna lie, Levy's content was what helped give me the confidence to go and try chess a while back; seeing the goofy moves and knowing that screwing up is part of the game made it easier to start wading into the murky waters of chess. I'm still a trash tier player, but I love the content.

    That second game... I respect anyone willing to make a defeat this bad public.
    The only thing that would make this game any better would be if black underpromoted to a Rook.

    • @Sarah-oj7bh
      @Sarah-oj7bh 2 года назад +39

      This makes me feel bad. I sometimes promote to a rook when I'm scared of stalemate (yeah, I'm that trashy), I hope my opponent doesn't take it as a sign of disrespect.

      @kamaririvera676 2 года назад +26

      @@Sarah-oj7bh if you're scared of a stalemate when promoting, just take a couple of seconds before promoting to look at the squares the king can go to when you do promote, and if it would be in check or not. If it has no free squares and it wouldn't in check, either underpromote or wait a bit.

    • @Sarah-oj7bh
      @Sarah-oj7bh 2 года назад +9

      @@kamaririvera676 Thank you, but I know theoretically how to avoid a stalemate. It's more that mating with rook and king is very straightforward, no thinking required, with a queen you have to pay attention a bit. It's still trashy to rather avoid that situation than think a moment about something that's not so complicated after all, but yah, that's how I roll I guess.

    • @shawnkoh5422
      @shawnkoh5422 2 года назад +6

      @@Sarah-oj7bh You can mate with queen and king using the exact same method as rook and king mate, and you will most likely never stalemate your opponent that way, even better - you likely won't lose your queen because your opponent's king can't move near it. I always use the same checkmate method regardless of whether I have a rook and king or queen and king vs king.

    29:08 To be fair, it looks like Ng5+ from white creates a real mating threat, and certainly wins a rook at the very least. Other than the material loss it's probably an empty threat, but I don't think naturefreak simply blundered his queen, rather he made a conscious decision to sacrifice it rather than (he thought) possibly get mated.

      But he can just move his queen to f6 and prevent the queen loss, the mate and the fork

    • @reldridge86
      @reldridge86 2 года назад +1

      @Paul Harrison You're right that I felt like there was a huge mating threat from Ng5+ ... but I didn't see the queen at all. I was laser-focused for like 25 seconds on the bottom left quadrant of the board, trying to figure out if I let the fork happen, what would I do. Move away from the Rook, and Qxe6 and all hell breaks loose ... Kf6 hangs the h7 pawn and gets me forked AGAIN ... I chose not losing it! And completely missed my Queen. Oops.

    8:10 - like my proudest game of chess. I had a king and a rook, my opponent had just made 2 queens and was marching to make a third. I moved my rook to the top of the board. To him it looked like I was preparing to hopelessly gobble pawns in a game I should've already resigned. He ignored me and gave me several free moves. and I mated him while he was up probably 30 points of material.
    we were ~700 elo at the time.
