    I swear, this is one of those songs that gets better and better every time you listen to it. There’s just so much going on in the subtext of the words and the structure of the music, and that’s not even touching on the phenomenal performances from the singers and other musicians. Easily one of my favorite Nightwish songs.

    Yes...Tuomas writes the best and most intelligent versatile music and lyrics there is.

  • @billmorrison8292
    @billmorrison8292 3 года назад +8

    This song is written from the perspective of Music as an entity. Starting with the music of the stars, followed by the first man made music, the drums. Then the Lyre the first known stringed instruments. The first song mentioned in the lyrics is the Hurrian Hymn discovered on a clay pot from about 3400 years ago. If you google it you can actually hear somebody playing it on a Lyre. If you like Floor's chest voice you should really listen to Song of Myself, the breakdown is my favourite part of all of Nightwish's songs.

      Any clue what the part that goes "There, I'll greet the greedy crowd
      / But will never / Never, ever sing to them" means?

    • @rudolfo963
      @rudolfo963 3 года назад +1

      Actually, the Hurrian Hymns or songs (36 of them) were all written on clay tablets, Hurrian hymn #6 being the only one intact enough when found to be completely deciphered. In this video at 7:55 or at 4:48 of the original lyric video, you can see a depiction of that clay tablet in the foreground, in front of the Sumerian "Bull" lyre. If you watch the video on a large enough monitor at full screen resolution, you can see the song, written in cuneiform on that tablet. It shows up a few more times before the end of the song.
      It should probably be mentioned as well that Tuomas embedded the Hurrian Hymn to Nikkal in the Anthropocene section of the second CD starting at about 24:40. There are at least a half a dozen interpretations of the song because of differing opinions on how to decipher the text. Versions of them can be found on the interwebs.
      Song of Myself is also one of my favorites.

      @@PaleHorseShabuShabu No idea, Greedy crowd makes me think of the great sales where people queued up all night and then stampeded into the shop determined to get the best bargains. Maybe the people who exploit the musicians and end up with most of the money. I think the only one who can decipher this is Tuomas himself.

    • @js0988
      @js0988 3 года назад

      Actually the first instrument was the sonorous rocks or lithophonic rocks, are rocks that resonate like a bell when struck.

    • @rudolfo963
      @rudolfo963 3 года назад

      @@js0988 Maybe. But I'm pretty sure no such stones existed in the area of Mesopotamia. And they would have been way too expensive to import from North America or Australia. 🌝 Joking.
      The first instrument might have been a series of hollowed out skulls of unfortunate enemies or two sticks like I remember from kindergarten or perhaps a hollow log that someone pounded on, but in his comment, Bill referred to the earliest STRING instrument.

  • @samuelengle3773
    @samuelengle3773 3 года назад +7

    So what is really interesting about this song is the story. The lyrics are being sung to us from the perspective of music...as if music itself took on a personification with a conscience and awareness. If you think about the lyrics about greeting the greedy croud but never singing to them... music doesn't sing...it is sung. Leave it Tuomas to create a song from this perspective.

    @Charis Sellick: Now you are hearing the musical genius of Tuomas! He is Nightwish's composer -- and it is no mystery why he is called the "Metal Mozart." Everything he does is so good, so subtle at times.
    If you want to hear Tuomas at his finest, react to the 8-movement piece that is the "Nature" side of Human :||: Nature. If you love musical dynamics, then you'll love "Nature." However, it is merely an instrumental piece, with no actual lyrics -- instead, there is the spoken word both at the beginning and end of the piece.
    And, I think you need to react to Shoemaker! Here, you'll hear Floor go what I call "full opera" at the end.

The orchestral parts were recorded by the Pale Blue Orchestra and arranged by Pip Williams, also included are the Metro Choir.
