I saw an article online where jason momoa was asking tourists to stay away so the locals could deal with the aftermath as tourists would be a drain on resources at this time. In the same article some tourists were swimming at the beach while search and recovery is still going on.

That's just wrong t,o leave her stranded. Lydia should have just moved out of the house, could have paid the bills for 3 months in advance and warned her mom that she was gonna have to get a job.

I agree. Her daughter knew that she was going to ditch her mom but to do it in another country was a far cry from taking the high road. It was spiteful .
People who are self-absorbed are blind to everything they are doing wrong. Anything they do wrong is the fault of the person they mistreat. They are incapable of accepting the blame for anything.
The MIL was just such a self-absorbed person, thinking she was more important than anyone else. While the offspring had every reason to cut ties with her, causing mom to live on the streets made them almost no better than mom had been. Lydia could have signed the house over to Camila and set up a trust that made house payments and all the utilities. Plus give Camila a reasonable monthly allowance. On the condition Camila never, ever, contact Alice, Lydia, or Brandon ever again. Failure to comply with the conditions would result in the trust fund being revoked, and Camila left to fend for herself.
One question, though. When Camila was kicked out of the house, why didn't she try to find a job, any job, to support herself?
It's sad where Camila ended up living. But she only has her own self-absorbed self to blame. Had she been a kinder person to Alice, Lydia, and Brandon, and not have been so self-absorbed, she might still be living in the house in some sort of comfort.
The timing of choosing Maui for this one was perhaps not the best.
