I’m really glad you brought up the property tax issue. I was flabbergasted to learn that in LA the property tax rate is .78% vs. 2.21% for Austin! Now while CA has personal income tax and Texas doesn’t, 1% of your income (say $100,000) is a heck of a lot less than 1% of $400,000. What’s interesting is people look at Texas as a “lower tax” state, it’s not actually true. The difference is in how each state taxes it’s residents. Definitely something to consider.

Jeremy you have one of the most honest and real videos regarding Austin I have seen since 2018. Buda is just as expensive as Austin. You just ruined peoples lives by signaling Pflugerville, which used to be a nice quiet place, thanks a lot Jeremy. Just messing with ya. Really, I appreciate your honesty about Austin and as a former resident I can confirm everything you said is true. I actually got a throat infection when I first ate at Whataburger when I first moved to Austin. It was the last time I ate there as well. Now, here is the most important thing you must know before moving to Austin. Austin is in financial crisis, Austin’s financial problems stem mostly from unfunded retirement obligations that have accumulated over the years. Of the $9.4 billion in retirement benefits promised, the city has not funded $2.9 billion in pension and $2.4 billion in retiree health care benefits. Furthermore, Austin did not have enough money set aside to weather the current pandemic and fluctuations in the market. The city is expected to lose some revenue as a result of the pandemic and its impossible to determine how much they will need to maintain services and benefits. Austin had $4.3 billion available to pay $6.4 billion worth of bills. Austin's financial position worsened by more than 100 percent or $1.1 billion mostly because the city's pension plans experienced investment losses and reduced the discount rate used to estimate plan liabilities. And yet there are still people moving there in droves. Shows you how irrational the wisdom of crowds really is and also nobody reads their city's financials. Remember, what a city owes, will be taken out of your hide, and as of this writing Jeremy, the city of Austin needs to divest you of $7,600 to pay its bills. Good luck brother.

I lived there in 1998 & learned: It's impossible to park downtown. Housing is expensive. I-35 is slower than a glacier during rush hour. I know 2 people who have lived there 40+ years & they said it's gotten worse. I don't know, I drive around Austin now when I go to the Hill Country. The toll road saves me 2 hours at least.

@@JeremyAKnight that is still so much cheaper than my neighborhood in LA. I have friends that just bought a home for 1 mil and I don't think it's even worth that. It's getting crazy out here in CA.

YES PEOPLE MOVE TO AUSTIN !!! Way better than LA which is 20 min to MALIBU, 1 hr to SB. AUSTIN so nice next to BUDAH, better than LA 1 hr 15 min to BIG BEAR. AUSTIN better 30 min to BASTROP, not LA 2 hrs to San Diego. AUSTIN BETTER 1 hr to Fiesta Taco Texas in San Tonio, NOT LA that has Hollywood , Universal Studios and Disneyland. Fiesta TACOS is better. Austin has way better ski resorts, not us. We only have TAHOE and MAMMOTH......not good. TEXAS has great beaches with brown water. Not us, we only have Monterey/Carmel and San Simeon, Ventura, Big Sur all not that great like TEXAS BROWN WATER.

I have no comments at this time. Check with me later, and maybe I would have visited Austin, but probably would never step foot in there. For all I know Texas could be a shithole, and especially Austin...lol...just kidding.

PROPERTY TAXES.... Texas = 1.83% of assessed value. California = 1.0% of assessed value. *****PROP 13 ADVANTAGE**** Prop 13 says your purchase price REMAINS your ASSESSED VALUE for as long as you own your home. That 'assessment' can only be increased 2% per year MAX... Example, I bought my home 15 years ago for $425,000 today it is worth $880,000.. I pay property taxes on that original $425,000 x 1.% = $4,250 in Texas, I would be paying 1.83% on $880,000 = $16,104. In the next 8 to 10 years my house will go over $1.2 million dollars in value.
Texas taxes = $1,200,000 x 1.83% = $21,960 per year ( = $1830 PER MONTH IN PROPERTY TAXES ALONE...?? REALLY???))... In California my "BASIS" remains $425,000 (plus a MAXIMUM increase of 2% per year) I might be paying $5,800 (about $483 per month) in taxes on a $1.2 million dollar home.
The reason taxpayers in California passed Prop 13, is that long time home owners.. like senior citizens were being TAXED OUT of their own homes...

Most of Austin is 2.21%. And most cities are higher. So your math is off. But the point is still the same. Yet, you are paying much higher income tax.

Yes property taxes go up a lot every single year for no reason! its ridiculous! They say your home is worth a lot more every year even though it's not!
