- This is the "Save The Yuppie" San Francisco street concert from November 11th, 1987 known in parts from the "Rattle And Hum" movie. The footage quality is not very good and the video goes black from time to time for a few seconds... but this is such a great rarity that I just had to share.

I spent over $50.00 for the bootleg VHS tape of this concert back in 1988. Oh RUclips, this generation doesn’t know the struggle. They don’t know the struggle. Great show and totally worth the $50.00 bucks. Live long and U2!

Heh yeah me too. I still have loads of grainy U2 VHS tapes. We had to find people in fan magazines, write letters to people, send international money orders, be patient, trust people you'd never met in foreign countries. Finding a bootleg of the Rattle and Hum film outtakes was like finding the Holy Grail. In those days, the fact that they were a U2 fan was a bond of trust that they wouldn't just take your money. Sheesh, kids these days!?!?!
Bono's voice was so good in the 80's and 90's, the 80's were a great time to be alive!
Bono's voice stayed strong for over a decade. Not many rock singers can make that claim. Shit, Axl Rose couldn't even make it through the Appetite For Destruction tour with his original voice intact. This guy made it through full tours for Boy, October, War, Unforgetteble fire, Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum( Lovetown), and Zoo Tv before his voice finally faltered. It's still not bad to this day, just nowhere near the power of 1983-1989, his absolute peak. His son has a great voice, too. Sounds just like his dad circa 1980.
I fully agree! But over time the human being loses the strong and sharp timbre to sing !!!

I was there as well. In SF for an interview. I was 26 yrs. old. Didn't get the job, but I saw U2! Amazing day!

This does bring back memories. I was across the Bay in classes when this was happening, so I only heard the reports of it...and that Bono got in trouble for painting on a public sculpture: "Rock and Roll stops the traffic". I got to watch the actual concert in Oakland later. Bono brought the artist whose work he'd defaced and had him paint something on the stage backdrop. It was cool but a little awkward since the sculptor had a cast on his leg. Anyway, the show went off without a hitch; Bono had the whole stadium enthralled.
This is so great! Thanks for sharing this. I was at school at CSUH and was considering skipping classes for this but I heard about it a bit too late and was sure by the time I reached the City it would be over. Plus I had tix to the concert they performed in Oakland just two days later. They got in trouble with the city of SF for spray painting on that sculpture. So they invited the artist who created that sculpture to the concert a couple days later, and they let him spray paint on their art, which was the Joshua Tree backdrop as part of the stage. I loved it.
Yes! I was at the Oakland concert when the artist "graffiti-ed" the Joshua Tree backdrop. I hadn't seen the story in the news, so I didn't know exactly what was going on until later when I saw the footage of the sculpture incident in Rattle and Hum (the movie). I was in general admission right against the stage for the entire concert. My ears rang for a good day or two!
This was such an exciting time for me 6-7 grade. My brother took me to see the movie and I loved it. I remember going into the record store and being drawn almost instantly to the display that had either black and gold or orange and black trim.
I was there!! About 10 to 20 feet on the bass player Adams side! I just happened to bring some weed to work that day which I rarely did.
Congratulations on being there that day. No idea why you mention weed though - is it important in the context of this concert? If it is perhaps you can enlighten us..

I cut school for this when I was a sophomore. We got front and center. I got busted when my dad saw me on the 5 o'clock news when they interviewed a girl next to me. Still can't find that clip.
Christopher B I never even had a beer at a U2 concert. I wanted to always enjoy it with a clear head. In stadiums, you can smell a lot of people sparking up. U2 isn’t the kind of band that is best paired with any particular substance.

Bono was cited for vandalism for spray painting the stone sculpture during Pride and U2 was banned (since lifted) from performing in San Francisco by then-mayor Diane Feinstein. A few days later U2 returned to the Bay Area to perform at Oakland Stadium and Bono invited the sculptures artist onstage who then spray painted graffiti on the stage backdrop!

was at both embarcedero and stadium gigs. embarcadero was unannounced so only those working downtown knew about it and only because we saw them setting up and went to investigate. Think the Pretenders were with them at Stadium and some else unremembered.

It is so great to actually this concert in full after all these years: well worth the wait! No band does it quite like U2; they are the best live group ever. They truly are the voice of conscience: very few people are willing to put their head above the parapet these days! It certainly took great courage for Bono to speak out against the brutal slaying of so many innocent people at a remembrance parade: we need more courageous men & women to stand up for truth & decency.
Missed this concert becuase I was working, but made it to Oaklnd for th concert. Awesome...My wife's first concert and we where close to stage. Now I own Platinum Album with Jashua Tree sighend just for that day and my wife. God Bless
I was front and center for this free show. It was epic because I also went to the Oakland show...$80 for a nosebleed seat. lol
U2 will always rate as one of my favorite bands.

Quality is excellent. never heard of this. Saw them on unforgettable fire+joshua tree tours and longest day with REM at MK bowl. All excellent going to Experience+innocence at Manchester arena to see what they are like live now. Think last two albums are better than anything since AYCLB.

I saw them the next week after this, at the Oakland Coliseum with The Pretenders and the Bodeans. The artist who made that sculpture was there, he painted the U2 JT stage with red paint, to symbolize no hard feelings between he and Bono, for graffitiing his artwork.

I remember this quite well. I was living in Fremont at the time. I was listening to KOME, a radio station in San Jose, and heard them announce this on the radio. I called them up to see if what I was hearing was real. Sure enough, they told me it was real. I grabbed my camera, got to the BART station to take the train to SF. When I got off the train at the Embarcadero Station I heard the band playing from the train platform two stories underground. Once at street level I saw that there was a big crowd. The concert was awesome. I was not able to attain tickets to any of the Oakland, CA shows. This was the next best thing.
Remember seeing on the local SF news about Bono spray painting on the piece of art at 41:48. City of SF said they would clean it off and send the bill to U2.......lol.
Still think Songs of Innocence is totally underated. Miracle of Joey Ramone. Every breaking wave ( fabulous as a duet live with Edge on Keyboards and Bono) Raised by bwolvesand the Troubles are all better than anything on HTDAAB except vertigo. The eXPERIENCE+iNNOCENCDE live show was just stunning not expecting gto see a better arena show. Remember Bono getting fined for Spray painting rock n roll Stop the traffic. You could see the other band members thinking "what the F.... is He doing now.

Phil Joanou was here, filming for Rattle & Hum. There's footage in the movie of All Along the Watchtower (the audio fixed and heavily augmented in post) and intercut with Bono's graffiti run. No mention in the film of his stupidly mistaking San Francisco as Sinn Fein. But this was Bono at his most sanctimonious. 'Here's one of our regular interludes where Bono vamps and then we close out the song.' If it were important, you'd stop the song. You wouldn't make it _part_ of the song.

This was shortly after a terrorist bombing in Ireland that killed 11. Bono was still very upset and sensitive at this point and misunderstood what the sign meant. He apologized during an interview later in the tour.

It’s interesting hearing the bootleg versions of the shows used in R&H. I learned years later that some of the songs were overdubbed etc.

He’s played the intro to “Stay” on the Gibson ES-175 on The ZOOTV show from Sydney, Australia. He also played the acoustic guitar part on “Staring At The Sun” on the opening night of the POPMart Tour in Las Vegas (he actually threw the whole band off because he was playin too slowly and they had to restart the song...it’s on RUclips somewhere). The Edge also once said something about Bono being a better guitar player than many would think and that he came up with the first three notes in “Out Of Control”. It’s all moot now.

Alvaro Lozoya I get what you mean. It because The Edge uses a slide on both guitar solos and plays the strings arpeggio-style around the same area of the fretboard. It doesn’t sound like it’s the exact same key, but I hear what you mean.

Proving that Out Of Control was written for the Gibson Explorer. Sounds awful played on that Fender. Light and weedy as hell. Go watch footage of Edge playing that circa 80-81 to hear what I mean.
