Waking Up With The House On Fire is such a F!ERCE album full of so many styles, edge and it's so raw unlike the over polished Colour By Numbers. The got gritty again x

It's funny watching this clip now when in 1997's "VH1 Behind the Music," they admitted that their 3rd album was "hurried & halfhearted." When I saw them perform in 2000, they didn't touch any song on albums 3 and 4. However, in this interview, they come off as upbeat and not bitter. It's admirable, really. I don't recall them being blasted in the US for album 3. MTV, radio, and other outlets just began focusing on Lionel Richie, David Lee Roth, Cyndi Lauper, and other (mostly US) musicians more.

I think this CD was awesome. I loved it then and I love it now. I listen to all their CDs a lot, but this one the most. It might not have had as many "hits" but it holds up better as an album overall more so than KTBC and FLTH. Mistake No. 3 and The Medal Song are fabulous songs.

@@lessismore8533 I meant Waking Up as an album is better in it's entirety than Kissing and Luxury. Of course Colour is prob their best 80s album

Wasn't a fan of waking up as a whole although I LOVE The Medal Song but too many average songs like Crime Time, Hello Goodbye and Dangerous Man let the album down, also George is more nasal with his vocals on Waking up. From Luxury was a slightly better album in my opinion.

I think it just did not have enough of the instantly boppy pop songs for the masses so it did not sell as big AND the media was tired of them too so they start talking shit

You can't help but want to fast forward through after Georges drug addiction. Mikey Craig clearly insinuated things weren't going so well with the band. Jon wasn't to blame foe Georges addiction but it didn't help.

I for one think that "Waking Up With The House On Fire" was one of their best albums. I mean what do people want from such amazing talent?? "Mistake Number 3" is a ballad like none other. I think that they're too many people who wouldn't recognize true brilliance if it were to jump up and bite them on their bum. ;-) ;-) ;-)

It's quite stupid to simple say 'The Medal SOng' was a flop after a great ride of hits because 'White Boy' and 'I'm Afraid Of Me' weren't hits either and they were their first two singles so Culture CLub already had their first two singles not chart as they were more Underground. 'Do You Really' got them onto TOTP because Shakin Stevens backed out that week because he was ill and Culture CLub stirred a storm because of how George looked and them they had a run of hits. It happens with all bands and artists, not everything is supposed to be a huge seller. Many people just wanted catchy pop songs and Culture Club and George even solo are about making music and some things are hits and some are not. It happens to everyone, usually thing records that are not hits are always my FAVOURITES! ... Kissing To Be Clever is my favourite CUlture CLub album but Colour By Numbers is their most successful and to me Colour By Numbers isn't as great as Kissing, Waking Up and Luxury ... So it all boils down to taste really.

The British press has always been known for being extremely fickle & bitchy so it's not surprising when they turned on them.... they turned on just about every other band that has had that level of massive world wide success.... Having said that, I always did think the war song was their...if not worst song, definitely their worst single. Just my opinion... George is still a very talented singer/songwriter

Waking Up With the House on Fire was SO disappointing. The War Song was idiotic, like a 3 year old's view of "war." The video's were so over-the-top they looked more like Jim Henson creations. It was the end of Culture Club to most of us at that time. We knew it had run it's course.
