Bro, let’s rubbish that fact that some white people came and discovered some places in our African continent. How were they first to discover it when our ancestors already live there? Even though the place might be unoccupied due to their small population at the time, our ancestors did know and owned the so called discovered places. It’s time for us to challenge some of the history(lies) we’re told!!!
Yeah that's a bit of a problem in the African educational system, which is still quite colonial even today.
Obviously there were Africans living on the Island already, as they were in Cape Verde and other nearby islands. Just like there were Africans living all around River Niger, Lake "Victoria", Mount Kilimanjaro and so on.. but the textbooks will tell you Mongo Park discovered this, Cecil Rhodes discovered that. That was because nothing was *discovered* until known to a European. That was the mentality. Not just in Africa - see, apparently Christopher Columbus "discovered" America (which is a clearly moronic claim)
There needs to be an overhaul of the *language* in the education system for sure.
Unbelievable man
If Africans discovered land in Europe, would Europeans allow Africans to maintain it???? HeLL NOOO!!! it's best Africans develop systems that will benefit us...just as the Europeans do. Just as the Asians do. Just as the Arabs do. Just as the Latinos/Hispanics do.....
If we need to reclaim it....reclaim it!!!
Agree with you all.

This video was Wonderful. So educational. Thanks Wode Maya. From Black America. Africa is so beautiful
Yes it is!
The girl hosting wode maya has limited if not no knowledge of senegalese history but you can't blame her, the educational system is.As a senegalese i was taught my own history briefly at a primary school level .After primary school, the history courses are mainly western civilization, the great wars, the french revolution, so on and on...everything but our own history. It will take time and great awakening in order to uproot the tree of colonization from african soil.
Dr. Cheihk Ants Diop talked about the mis education of native Africans about their own history in Barbarism or Civilization.
@@jpat989 indeed
So true, and also as the saying goes we in the West know more about African history than our brothers and sisters in Africa. And also most still thinks whites are to be worship also very sad but true.
@@shinebrightlikeadiamond6411 sad reality indeed.

West Africa I am coming home one way. And not empty handed. America's brain drain is Africa's brain gain.
The i sland is so beautiful. The Portuguese did alot of evil to our fellow Africans. So sad.

Went to Goree, and weather is cool like the West indies. And many Senegalese men in there have dreadlocks like in Jamaica. Nice , beautiful and noiseless Island.
Everyone wants to be Caribbean lol
Piman Mann Jaques
So dreadlocks started with Jamaican?
90% of hairstyles in Africa can be traced at least 1500 years back. how many Africans had braids, dreadlocks, twists... in those slaves ships? C’mon mi youth loool

Thank you so much for changing our narrative and empowering Africans.
May the footprints 👣 you're leaving on the internet educate everyone who thinks Africa is just an uninhabitable jungle and emancipate the souls of Africans who are lost to mental slavery.

Beautiful Senegalese baby girl... love you from Somalia....
The first settlers of this Island are my mother’s tribe, the Lebou tribe, they’re traditionally Fisher men and live anywhere there is water, like Dakar, Goree Island, the North in Saint Louis, etc...
They Settle In Cape Verde Too Them And Serer...

You are great job Mr Maya. I got to know lots about Africa after watching your videos
I am from India
She doesn't know what she's talking about goree is a Senegalese word it means "dignity" because the slave rather die than being a slave so some of them use to kill themself if they had the opportunity because their dignity wouldn't allow them to be controlled by the white man .
plus goree were discover by this ethnic group call THIEDO before they were any religion in Senegal.
THIEDO people is close to lébou ethnic they are all Senegalese and pure black
Thank you sr! i am very impressed by your clairvoyance i belive in your version than what i was allways told. firstble, in english, one would say: (red God) and not (God red). Gore is a wolof word which is our national laanguage meaning= to have dignty / to be of dignity. as matter of fact, the seconde island on the other side of the city is called (ngor) which means dignity. We need to learn how to think out of the box because they've been falsfying the truth.
@@diafarsouare3424
Exactly its sad that we don't know our history it's a shame.
Thank you for the correction. I didn't know, but my blood was boiling just listening to it.
May Allah bless the island and its inhabitants. In Holland we learn at school that the island is named after Goree, a former island in the south of Holland. They say the Dutch colonized the island in 1617. They bought it from a Lebu chief.
When was they ever a time when they had no religion?
Thanks for sharing with the beauty of Africa
Pls, your narrator cannot say that the Portuguese discovered Goree when there were original inhabitants living in that place before they invaded.
You don't "discover" and name a place already occupied by some living humans😡
Tayo made the same impression when he said some invaders discovered Gurara waterfalls in Nigeria. I don't get it.
Africans, rewrite your history oooooo, pls!!!
It's heartbreaking to hear that. Pls, Wode Maya take note.
Well said!
In with you on that one
That’s most likely part of her school’s curriculum!
@ Mosunmola Adeojo : That’s why Africans need to use their own language when it comes to narrative of our story. How often do you see Indians , Chinese and Germans using someone else language apart from theirs in a global stage ? It’s only Africans felling proud using someone else language. I’m not saying we shouldn’t be linguistic, we need languages to do business in the motherland (Africa) but , we have to have a unified religion, education, development etc etc as sub Sahara Africans.

Gorée was Senegalese before Portuguese get there and the name Gorée is a wolof word
Papisco G you’re definitely right Goree is a Senegalese world I think if we translate it into English it becomes “dignity”(it’s the closest definition I can get) but before we named it Goree the island had another name I forgot it.

Stop repeating that. It isn't true. The white man didn't create the bible. The bible is all about Africa. Our ancestors took God with them on the ship. They didn't learn of God from the white man. A bunch of fake deep hotep brothers spread these lies of ignorance, when u look at the facts, it's not true.
Ambassador Siyyon agreed. Like everything else, the whites stole the bible and misinterpreted it for their evil agenda with their fake religion. We have to whats ours, the true connection with God, and leave the devil’s lies behind.

Hello. Ow thank you so much
Oumy Seck it’s Diarra you did good sister but saying the Portuguese discovered Gorèe is confusing
Good to see you say hi to everyone
Portuguese perpetrated slavery in Africa for centuries. Today it is still a poor country if not for EU it would have been poorer than most African countries. The law of karma.
😁😁😂👍
Hen Top Many Portuguese are migrating to their former colonies in Africa eg Angola and begging for jobs, citizenship. ..Karma is really biting them. Haha...next will be the British, French etc.

Question:Why is not right to say that John Speke discovered the source of River Nile ?

My Senegal, I miss you.
No Europeans. Discovered any land or things in Afrika!!
I seriously doubt that the Portuguese were the first to discover the island
@Lumani LuLu exactly. They want people to believe that Africans were incapable of doing anything. Absolute fallacy.
@Lumani LuLu you're right I am Senegalese, Goree island is the natural area of the Lebou tribe who are fishermen..
Ulysse H Actually it’s falsified Western dogma enforced in the Prussian school system to enforce colonization which only deals with European history and accounts from the 16th century. Europeans were not even alive for as long as Africans so there is no way they could discover an island in Africa that was already there with the natives of the land.
You can google some of my dialect since it’s quite obvious your brain cannot compute or comprehend basic English and facts.
Have a mercy
on the girl. You need to have good education to know what u guys are talking about. Vive l'Afrique 🤘

Wow this island is gorgeous that why I am in love with Senegal ❤💋
Goree island was already occuped by the Lebu tribe ( fishermen ) long time before the portuguese arrived here.
////
The Island of Goree is an exceptional testimony to one of the greatest tragedies in the history of human societies: the slave trade. The various elements of this “memory island” fortresses, buildings, streets, squares, etc. recount, each in its own way, the history of Gorée which, from the 15th to the 19th century, was the largest slave-trading centre of the African coast.
The house of slaves was built by the dutch in 1776.
////
I think you should go there to have more information about it because its an important part of African history.
////
IM MAAAAYAAAA🆙️ African brother from Sweden.
I lived in Africa for 15 years 3 0f those in Dakar and your vid brought back many fond memories. I used to love taking the ferry to Goree and the lady who lives there is very lucky indeed. Thanks
That sister is beautiful and intelligent. Thats a historic and blessed island
The sister talking with Wode Maya was beautiful and the whole of Senegal is just breathtaking and beautiful..... now my only complaint is that since goree Island was named by our colonizers then why keep the name if we want to be totally free from oppression we must give up these European names that was given to us by the ones who enslaved us, tortured us and sold us and also many people do not know this but Senegal along with many African nations has to pay taxes to France because of slavery ending and they have to make money off of Africans by any means
so if we call ourselves free Africans then we must break ties with these evil Europeans 100% and not halfway.🤔
Thank you🌍 I know that right!
Beautiful motherland Beautiful Mama Africa!!!!
Thanks you i am Sénégalais and i see that you do a nice job big up

Let's just do some rectification about discovery...1st of all, please dont blame the lady in the video...she is right she just telling what she been taught at school...I'm Senegalese living in London and yeah when I was in school they taught us that the Portuguese were the 1st to discover Goree Island but here "Discover " simply means that the Portuguese are the 1st European among others ( French, german, English, Hollandese, spanish...) to step in this island so it doesn't necessarily means there were no black ppl living there. Indeed ppl were already living in that island! With that being said...I wanna thanks wode Maya for visiting Goree island and for doing such a beautiful job for "Africa to the world" ...looking forward to seeing part2 of Goree island cause there is still so much to show and tell about this Island...please go to the house of slavery there is a tourist guide who are gonna tell the history specially talk about the slavery both in French and English...its important to show that so that our brothers and sisters who live in the Caribbean and the afro-American can learn a lot about their origins.....thanks again and God bless you
