    Mike
    Just a couple comments. I designed the original Mauldulator with MMM. I have seen people talk about 300% modulation and 20 and 30 kHz frequencies and of course these are both ridiculous. Anytime we mentioned anything remotely close to that, it was to show it had the headroom to achieve those things so usage at 5 KHz and 130% peaks was no challenge. In the first version of this, we did put in a filter at the end to cause a roll off at about 6 KHz. On the second version, we have no filter and tell the user they should provide that in their processing gear. We have abandoned the LM324 because of it's low gain bandwidth product. It would be interesting, if you still have one of these units you reviewed to look at the cross over distortion at the higher audio frequencies and see what it looks like. Something that claims high fidelity needs to have minimal crossover distortion. As for this competitor, I will give him credit for his talent at good documentation and slick videos. The quality of installation looks pretty good too. As to his integrity and honor, his actions speak for themselves

      TinkTron Not sure if you will get this message, but in case you do, I must say I am disgusted that someone would make money from ripping you off. To be honest, I reverse engineered your original design for my own personal use and the schematics are locked away forever. I even informed John that I did it. Thank you so very much for bringing such fun to the CB world. I have a lot of respect for you. Respectfully, Ken (KP68)

Thanks again Richard.

    You can't "steal" a concept. And there is nothing wrong with improving upon a concept. MMM has a very unique sound and I would credit him with the knowledge and experience in pioneering that sound and with engineering the circuit to do so. That said you can't fault someone for taking basic well known electronic concepts and putting together a circuit that allows you to modify an audio signal. And potting a circuit board has been around since the 70's if not before - which is sort of the same thing as wiping off identifying chip numbers.
    Your video is informative and well done on the other hand

    • @TinkTron
      @TinkTron 7 лет назад +2

      There is no claim that the concept was stolen. It is the implementation that was stolen. Asymmetry on AM has been around for half a century, but the circuit to accomplish it in this instance was taken and no credit given. Actually, the guy flat out said that it was not a copy and MMM bought one and proved it was.

    I hate to see these radios hacked up. I realize his work is neat and well done. But yeah I said but. This radio is a monster right out of the box. I can see a SSB alignment or maybe a few minor tweaks. I have never owned a radio that matched this one from the first words spoken into the mic. This radio is loud on AM and a screamer on SSB. What more can you ask for.

    He said, she said, whatever...MMM is a good person, but failed to bring this idea to market. Jose in Miami took the bull by the horns and produced a highly professional circuit and developed a product that is superior to none. I run an RCI99v2 he added an outboard Standalone unit. I run twin Heil mics (two different models) at the same time thru a W2IHY 8-band EQ and EQ Plus to achieve the same audio you hear with MMM when he is on the air.

    Since the AM bandwidth for CB is 8khz, by widebanding it up to 10k, is just creating "splatter boxes." Thus a standard 8k receiver will not perceive the modulation as much better, and possibly worse, but will hear it on adjacent channels as splatter as the modulation saturates the 4k guard bands right into the next channel.
    Why not just make the allotted 8khz sound better rather than creating a "splatter box" at 10k?
    Good way to make enemies out of friends.

  • @ERICtheLATE

    It has a major impact during pileups.
    M³ will put it down with the antanna pointed elseware, coming in s5, when the channel is clear, but during a maul rampage, his fidelity and banter shines thru like he has lanes outside the fence the others are restricted to. I will try to record a lil water fence of it. Otherwise, when the channel is clear, he sounds like a high quality shortwave broadcast, not super bassy like WLS, but like a whale greeting frantic guppies.

    I don't know why UNIDEN don't use the Tayloe direct SSB generator/demodulator at signal frequency, you know generating the RF at say 1820000khz which get divided by 4 in the Johnson counter which drives the PI5V331 one for LSB/USB TX and one for LSB/USB RX and one of the pins on the Johnson counter will give the 455khz.

    So this makes it less efficient for two-way communications. How much is the sideband amplitude down at the end of the spectrum display? More positive side modulation without more bandwidth, eh still cheating a bit, but at least won't interfere with adjacent channels.

    Also these are in fact hi fidelity whether people agree or not. It absolutely is. Its not gonna work using the regular mic. Its designed for direct inject. So you can definitely definitely achieve hi fidelity audio.....as far as adjacent channel rejection...just so that its understood....that board....well....the original rather....its designed to be used with a program....and also direct injected. where you can control the injected audio bandwidth to your liking. For your voice. And you can control your receive bandwidth as well. Again my apologies on my first comment. I jumped the gun and got a little defensive.

    • @bigcbradio
      @bigcbradio 2 года назад

      it is NOT hi-fi, hi-fi would mean high fidelity, this asymod product distorts the original audio signal a lot! Try running a sine wave thru it on a dual trace scope, what comes out is massively distorted representation of the original signal. If you watch his own videos where he claims the signal is not pinched off, it is pinched off a lot and there are many other distortions to the signal.

    Yeah, they're Chinese LM2576 boost converters, couple of dollars (maximum) from eBay, so at a guess the power devices on the edge of the board are used as a push pull amplifier pair with a virtual ground to modulate the drain/collector voltage?
    Would be interesting to see the low frequency signal on the finals.
    Not impressed though, it's one thing to get better modulation depth but only those who have a radio modded in the same lame way get the benefit it's at best a waste of money, the wider ceramic filter will worsen the AM/FM receive performance as well.
    And won't it stomp on adjacent channel users too?

    I see that you are using Rigol DG4102 function generator as your two-tone generator for SSB testing. How do you combine those two outputs into one before feeding the signal to the mic input? Is the small black box you have on the left side of the DG4102 that works like mixer for your audio signals from the DG4102?

    • @mikesradiorepair
      @mikesradiorepair  6 лет назад +1

      Kultur Chefen
      I usually use a communications test set that has low distortion audio amplifiers. One of them will do up to a 20 tone composite signal. To use two separate signals from two channels or from two separate generators just use a simple resistive combiner.

    • @kulturchefen4935
      @kulturchefen4935 6 лет назад

      Cool! I think my next step is to get a HP 8920A radio comms test set.
      I have a HP 8904B function generator with 4 channels that "seems" to work ok and that one can also combine those 4 channels into one output.
      However, I have always wondered why my 2-tone SSB testing shows different levels for my two tones I use, for example 900Hz and 2400Hz or 850 Hz and 2200 Hz.
      I always thought that it was a consequence by the design of the audio circuits in CB radios but now when I recently got my Rigol DSA815-TG generator I hooked up my HP 8904B to the DSA815 and was surprised to see that the lower tone had lower amplitude than the higher tone. I had to set the 900Hz tone to 35mV and the 2400Hz tone to 11mV to get two signals on the spectrum analyzer with same amplitude...
      I guess I need to build a low THW tone generator with adjustable levels of each tone before going through a main level control. Like this one: sites.google.com/site/linuxdigitallab/rf-homebrew-instrument/audio-low-thd-two-tone-generator

      When we originally built the very first Mauldulator, we put in a 20 KHz signal and of course that resulted in what looked like a dead carrier 2 channel up and down from the channel the radio was on. We later applied FM to the 20 KHz signal and sure enough you could hear the FM audio on those two carriers. This was not done as some kind of marketing ploy, it was just done to test the idea. I am not sure we even mentioned it before this.

    After watching this clip a second time I think for people like myself who might want to get into the "hi-fi" CB thing, this might be the easiest way to do so. When I say people like myself I'm referring to those who enjoy the hoby but have little to no knowledge about how to install/inject/modify or wideband a tranciver. Although I did show some interest in "hi-fi" 11 meter operation, I've since lost that interest. The guy's who are into it and do it right sound awesome, but after listening to so many of them on air my initial interest has completely dissipated. I enjoy trying to keep my setups sounding as good as they can whilst doing it as close to stock as possible. I recently had a d104 moded for a lower response with use for my uniden madiison, and although I've yet to give it a run through I'm expecting good reports. I heard a cobra 148 gtl with the same mod that's been done to my mic and am hoping to get the same results. which by the way were very impressive to say the least. I want to be able to key my mic and sound as good as one could with a stock or as close to it without having to keep my eye on a scope while constantly having to adjust a eq/mixer and all the other adjustments like carrier etc etc. if the "hi-fi" thing is you interest more power to you. When done right the result cab but impressive to say the least. I might consider experimenting with my sonar fs 2340. My reason for possibly doing so is because I own two. If I only had one I'd be happy with the audio clipper board bypassed, and the only reason it bypassed is its the only way to incorporate the demco modulator. it's also necessary if I decided to use an amplified d104. I do have one wired for the fs 2340 but have yet to give it a try. This "hi-fi" isn't for everyone and at this point it's not for me. if it's something you're interested in go for it but no matter what floats your boat, the important thing is to enjoy the hoby and resect it. keep it as clean as one could while reaching you desired audio/output. God bless all my radio friend's and have a great 2017. Hope to catch you on the air. another three years for the new cycle until the enjoy the local rag chewing sessions and the occasional skip conditions.

      Problem is hi-fi CB is a stupid idea and those employing it are subjecting everyone else to it whether or not it's "their thing." SSB is popular on HF particularly because the more narrow bandwidth is better for long distance voice communications.

      The reason people broadband is for better audio fidelity. In a factory radio your limited to around 3kHz or less audio bandwidth. Broadbanding the audio bandwidth allows you to transmit more audio range. The problem is when you broadband the audio you start to cause adjacent channel splatter.

      They call it eSSB. It will kind of work is all I can say. The big limiting factor in SSB is the crystal filter. These are mainly designed for AM.

      MikesRadioRepair hmm not worth it with 3 locals to talk to here, lol.
      I already seen mauldulators and asked him the same question.
      I'd rather buy a Yaesu or driftwood that has 6khz wide built in with a submenu.
      Till I find a 6KC filter for my 101, I'll have to suffer with 2.4.
      Have a Happy New Year Mike

      The AM modulator section shown in this review is not used on SSB mode. I assume it uses the stock SSB signal generation

    The guy " mark sherman " is a genius actually, take ones money for a fine-tuned 955, the radio plus the fine-tuned service, cut the wire so it works on 11 meters, say it has been fine-tuned, close it up send it out, take the profits from the service he performed and buy another radio, rinse and repeat! all you dumb chit truckers fell for it, he charged you hundreds of bucks for peak and tweaked 955 when all he did was cut a wire, you paid full price for a radio and his wire-cutting service, overcharged you for a radio " profit" bought another one to do it to someone else offering the same shit, then he buys his dope, pays his tailor park rent, and slaps those same truckers all day long LMFAO!

    what i think is funny about this is .....this guy is a ticketed ham operator.....he is modifying a radio that may or not be legal to operate on 11 meters in the united states per fcc regulations ....has his call sign attached to this ....and is openly modifying and selling these in the us market .........

      I do not and never will own one of these. It was a customers radio so unless someone sent me two of them, one with and one without the module I can't do a comparison test.

      MikesRadioRepair Sorry, I didn't mean one of those splatter boxes, but rather a good standard radio.

      I still don't have one of them and have no plans on buying one. I also don't install these things. This one was already in the radio when the customer purchased the radio.

      MikesRadioRepair ok I guess I'm being stupid. I'm just interested in how a normal unmodified radio, like a cobra 29 or a Royce 609 for example, would output when tested in the same way. Sorry for the confusion.

      Oh, sweep a audio signal through a stock radio. I can tell you what you would see. About a 3kHz bandwidth for the audio bandpass.
