Many years ago I met a Truck Driver from Alaska who told me that his Favorite Moose Rifle was his. 270 . I have one also with larger calibers but that 270 is amazing.
Yes it is, thanks for watching!
My name was drawn for moose this year, 26/09/2023, I bought a weatherby vanguard in 270win for the hunt.... dropped a small bull 537lb. The ammo I used was a 150gr round nose soft point S&B. The hunt began at 7:15am , the hunt was over at 7:20am... with a lung shot. 130yd... Through thick brush. Bear season is next..... Thanks for the video on the 270win it's an awesome round.
Thanks for sharing your story. Yes, it’s a great cartridge.
I have been hunting with a Winchester Model 70 featherweight chambered in the 270 Winchester since the mid eighties and have never had my quarry get away. Keep in mind that my quarry are Whitetail deer and Black bear.
Nice! Thanks for sharing that!
I've been slaying deer with a .270 for 40 years, never failed
Awesome!
I had forgotten that the 270Win case was based on the 30-03. Thanks for reminding me. Great video.
Your welcome! Thanks for watching!
I have a 270 Winchester and have a 270 WSM and the 270 Winchester cartridges is a great I kind of like the short magnum though because it will shoot a 150 grain bullets at the same speed as 130 grain out of 270 Winchester but I like and shoot both of them
I prefer the WSM also, but I respect the 270 Win. Can’t go wrong either way
My first deer rifle in 1964 was a Remington 700 in .270 Winchester. I was secretly disappointed because I wanted a Winchester 94 lever gun in 30-30. I was hunting mule deer (and later elk) in Western Colorado so I came to appreciate the .270 cartridge. It proved effective on elk but I was always careful with shot placement and was aware of my limitations as a shooter.
That’s cool. You had one of the first model 700’s.
Thanks for sharing. The 270 Winchester definitely meets my needs.
Thanks for watching!
FYI I got the 165 Nosler ABLR’s to shot sub moa at 2800 plus fps in my 270 win. Do the math and that is a great long range round. Don’t be afraid to try the heavy for caliber bullets. Sometimes that will still stabilize w the 1;10 twist barrels.
That’s very interesting! Good to know! That long neck would suit a heavy bullet pretty well
I've been using a 150gr Nosler Ballistic tip at 3000fps for decades, incredible downrange performance
Hey - the Hawk Bullet Company manufactures a 165 grain bullet that is designed for the 270 Winchester with a 1 in 10” twist. While it is not designed for long range hunting - at woods ranges it’s puts more “pow” in an already great American classic.
I have a model 54 in 3006 that I'm customizing..I may have said that previously lol ..still love my 270wsm keep em coming buddy...Merry Christmas 🎄
I know someone who will sell their 270 win in Winchester model 54 to me for $1000. I’m tempted but I love my 270 WSM a little too much. Merry Christmas!
Very honest post I do respect your opinion on this awesome cartridge. Keep the entertaining vids coming Sir!
I love my M70 in 270WCF, its perfect, ive not used this in my Moose hunts for a few years. Next year I'll put away my 06 and utilize the 150gr bullets ive got loaded.👍👍
Thank you! Hopefully you’ll have success on your next hunt.
Always enjoy your videos. Have a wonderful Christmas
Thank you! Merry Christmas!
270 win has been an epic Wisconsin deer rifle for me for 25 years . 30 to 300 yds its never really failed me . Had a trouble spot with some rem core lokt 130s so switched to Hornady and federal and back to hitting like thors hammer. Especially my go to when i sit in areas when i need blood trails or instant knock downs along terrible thick swamps.
That’s awesome
I use my 270's for everything
Deer , bear , elk and anything else
Awesome, thank!
270 says it all
It’s a good one. Has a lot of fans on RUclips
I've hunted with a 30-06 for 25 years and absolutely love it but just purchased my first 270 I hope it performs as well as my 06
@@randall4204 I think you’ll be happy with it.
270 is a great dear and antelope cartridge in open areas . It is even a greater long range predator/varmint cartridge. Even better than the 25-06 or 243 as a deer/varmint cartridge. I think the 270 is light for elk and moose size game.
Well said, thanks!
The bull Elk I've met with my 270 don't think it's light.
expensive??? DON'T KNOW HOW TO RELOAD??? LOOK, I FIND MORE BRASS OF 270 AND 06/30 THAN OF 223 AND 308, I NEVER HAD A POD IN MY LIFE. THE INTERLOK OF 140 COSTD 35 DOLLARS WITH BC .435, IT WAS MUCH CHEAPER THAN ANY 243 POINT, I GUESS I WAS CLEVER AND LUCKY TO BUY 1400 POINTS OF IT
Well...!!!???### I've used the .270 Win for sixty two years with about 98 percent one shot kills. Moose, caribou, grizzly(yep), white tail deer, hogs, ground hogs, 50lb African antelope up to 2,500lb African eland. The grizzly was killed with one shot...130gr Nosler Partition. My opinion from a lifetime of seeing .270 kills is stated in the following statements. No matter what cartridge used and bullet size, bullet PLACEMENT is 90 percent of killing power. The other 10 percent is the unknown. Finn Aagaard, a professional Kenya hunter had vast observations and experiences with a good many calibers in his native Kenya. He made the statement he had seen more one shot kills with a .270 than with any other caliber. He was very fond of a story where he shot a wildebeest squarely through the lungs. The animal appeared surprised and ran off as if nothing had happened, after being shot with a .375 H&H Magnum. This was not the only time he observed a larger caliber fail to quickly put the animal down. I suppose ALL of us have discovered that life is not perfect. My .270s have been easy to accurately place shots to the boiler room because of flat trajectory, good bullets and LOW RECOIL. I've shot the .375 H&H Mag!!!!! It hurt me so bad I had to pee and didn't make it to the john. Low recoil, flat trajectory and good bullets equals shot good placement. This is just my experience.
@@glennrcampbell4411 Never heard a better testimony for the 270. I think most hunters like myself get sucked into paper ballistics to much. Hype from ammo makers and gun writers feed the hunting public like used car salesmen.
I was a sucker for the 7mm Magnum to replace my 270. Could not tell the difference on game. Now lm with the 30-06.
Kinda the video I was looking for. Trying to learn more about this cartridge. I was gifted a bunch of 270 win ammo & I am intrigued enough to try a rifle, just to play. I already have a 243 win, 6.5 cm, 25-06 rem & 30-06. So I really don’t need a 270 but love trying new guns.
It’s a good one, definitely worth a try.
Got a sako 75 in 270 been just boringly reliable one shot kills on deer
That’s awesome!
Got a Sako 75 in 270wsm and same with one shot kills on deers and bears, using 130gr trophy copper.
5:51 best said about recoil…really good explanation/ opinion 👏👍
Thanks for watching!
Was just thinking about buying a new 270 and then I saw this video. Great job. Just curious, the drop chart you used has the 270 with less drop at 400 yards (18.5) than the 270 WSM (23.8)? Or I may have read the chart wrong.
I’ll have to go back and double check, but the 270 WSM should definitely have less drop with higher velocity
The mags increase recoil and they can be really rough on the meat. I shot a doe with my 270 wby mag at about 150 yards and the exit was a hole the size of a softball. Merry Christmas to you.
That’s a good call out Tom! Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas!
What ammo were you using?
@@realmetis8002 it was 130 grain weatherby ammo I don’t remember what bullet. It was probably over 20 years ago, I didn’t pay that much attention to bullets back then.
@@realmetis8002 by the way one of my 3006s I’m not real happy with the accuracy, I’m considering what you’re considering about a re-barrel to a different caliber. I can’t decide between a 280 AI or a 35 Whelen. What’s your opinion?
@@tomlarue654 35 whelen 😁
Love the 270 but I live in the northeast so cartridges like the 7mm-08, .308, 30-06, and .30-.30 are more appropriate for my needs.
Same here where I live
🤠 As we contemplate the "Miracle" of the Christmas season and reminisce about hunting seasons past, let us put things into "Historical Perspective"! Winchester dominated the last century of rifle cartridge development and, at the turn of the previous century, had the market for hunting with their 30-30 lever action rifle! Then along came the Spanish-American War and WWI and the use of the 30-06, in a bolt action rifle! Seeing the potential of both (for long range hunting out West), Winchester tweaked the use of both and came up with their own bolt action hunting rifle - chambered in the 270 Winchester! This set the standard for long range hunting out West and is still among the most viable and popular options almost a century later! It is Truely is a "Hunting Cartridge Miracle"! 👼My prayers 🙏 have already been answered! 😇
I like it! Thanks Ron
MERRY CHRISTMAS! 🥳
@@ronlowney4700 Merry Christmas!
😪 Just thinking about it makes me want to go out and buy a Model 70 Winchester in a Tigerwood Maple stock (like the old custom Weatherby's used to have)! 😯🤑
@@ronlowney4700 That sounds pretty nice!
When it comes to WT deer hunting… the “this versus that” that haunts me is 7mm-08REM vs 270WIN.
I recently chose to go with 270WIN despite the fact that the 708 competes closely with it in terms of downrange energy and terminal performance. So why the 270??
I chose it for the flat trajectory. With a 129gr LRX bullet at 3075fps MV I can achieve a 7”dia. kill zone maximum point blank range of 300m (330yd) in winter conditions. The 708 can achieve an MPBR of 275m (300yd). Yup… only 10% difference. The 270 requires 20% more propellant to yield a 10% increase in point blank range over the 708. I love them both… they are fantastic cartridges.
Either one is a good choice
Great cartridge no question about it. I like the .280 AI a little more though.
Alabama whitetails.
Hornady Interlock 140gr.
Sweet
Is this heaven? A video on God's cartridge?
I was hoping you would watch Doc!
DIGALE A BLAKE SHELTON QUE HAGA DE GOD CARTRIDGE
270 Win.....my first hunting rifle, my favorite. I have 4. I have a friend, a big game guide in AZ. About 20 years ago I asked him what he thought about the 270 Win being "minimal" for elk. Never heard him laugh so loud. He stated to me the 270 Win was the most common caliber his hunters brought for deer, elk, pronghorn. I also think EVERYONE needs a 30.06
Great comment! Thanks for sharing!
IF I COULD DRIVE THE 3006 JUST LIKE MY 270 I WOULD NOT NEED MY 270
@@sergiolazzaro7970 Nonsense. EVERYONE NEEDS A 270!!
Great Info
Thanks!
All you will ever need -- Wyoming guy
Definitely is!
The 280 is my sentimental favorite 30.06 based cartridge since I killed my first muley and pronghorn with one. However, the 270 shooting 130 bullets is certainly an ideal choice for open country mulies and, of course, pronghorn.
270 and 280 are so similar. 270 is definitely more popular, the 280 is more versatile
@@hopefulballistics Well put.
Shot a deer last year at 30 yards with a 270 win I was using 130 grain Norma whitetail, it died before it hit the ground.
Awesome
Not a 270win fan nor care about Jack O'Conner or Outdoor Life or anything like that. I got into the 270win around 2018 because I found a lefty bolt rifle for it and factory ammo and components were cheap and very available. Even thru the pandemic I could find 270win and component bullets locally so that was a big deal for me. It happened to be the most available in my area. That was reason enough so I ran with it. It can use 90 to 150gr bullets so it makes 25-06 basically not needed and with 150gr its enough for larger game and recoil isn't too much. I only pack my 338win and 45-70 when I'm in grizzly locations.
Thanks for watching! I appreciate your comment
I just replied to someone's opinion here that the .270 is not for larger game. Well.... I've hunted from the top of the world(Yukon), to Tennessee, to Southern Africa. From groundhogs to moose, caribou, grizzly(yep), to 50lb antelope, 600lb waterbuk and kudu to 2,500lb eland. One shot kills were the norm. I only messed up on the water buck. The shot was too low. The next shot finished it. Shot placement is 90 percent of killing power, as state by Finn Aagaard. Finn Aagaard was one of our most experienced (NRA) gun writers. He immigrated to the U.S. in the late 1970s from his native Kenya. He observed the .270 in action, and stated he saw more one shot .270 kills than with any other caliber. He used the 7 x 64 Brenneke (exact twin to .280 Rem). Again, he stated 90 percent of killing power is shot placement. The remaining 10 percent is the unknown. In Africa my .270 trumped other hunters with larger calibers in .375 and .416. The hunters were poorer shots due to heavy recoil. Shot placement, low recoil, and flat trajectory is what has made the .270 a international success.
Well said and great comment, thanks!
Yay a new video
Yes!! Thanks for watching!!
Just wondering but those woods look like Missouri lol 270 is one of my favorites I wish the 6.8 western was offered in more rifles
Missouri, indeed
@@hopefulballistics I recognize the woods
🧐 So, the Browning Hells Canyon Long Range (LR) now has a 1 in 7 1/2" twist for their 270 Winchester barrel (it is a 28" barrel in a tactical rifle though, just not what I am looking for)! When I was looking to rebarrel one of my 270 Winchesters - though that may no longer be necessary if my guns will shoot the 165 grain Nosler ABLR accurately - Lilja and Hart have a variety of twist rate barrels (1 in 9, 8 1/2, and 8 for the 270)! Since the 7mm Remington Magnum can shoot up to a 175 grain bullet with a 1 in 9 twist, according to most reloading manuals - I think that would suffice for the heavier bullet weights in the 270 Winchester? I had heard that other companies are beginning to put a 1 in 8 twist on their new 270 Winchester rifles too, from Shot Show reports (so, are more heavy 270 bullets going to soon be available?)! Meanwhile, Browning still doesn't seem to be supporting the 6.8 Western very well! So, could it just be that people don't want to part with their 270 Winchester, or is it because the performance of the 6.8 Western really isn't all that different, or is it because the 7mm prc is going to kill it's sales? Your thoughts??? 🕵️♂️
That’s cool to see! I would like that to happen in the 270 WSM as well.
🤠 For my hunting purposes, the 270 wsm and 280 AI are just to my liking (both have about the same recoil as the 30-06)! However, the 300 wsm and soon, the 7mm prc, will have more support! Both the 300 wsm and 7mm prc are fine cartridges, but just a little more recoil than I would prefer (and why I prefer the 270 wsm and 280 AI regarding "performance" vs. recoil)! Luckily, for me, the 270 Winchester has met my needs quite well and with new powders and bullets, has become better than ever! 😮
😁 I guess the good news is for you, when you finally replace your 284, you can neck it down to a 22-284 and get 6,500 ft/s of velocity out of it for "Varments"! 🔥🔥🔥
@@ronlowney4700 lol
I hunt with a 6.5 Grendel 123eldm out of a bolt gun at 2700 does all that but 32-33 grains of powder
Cool!
I like the 300 Win mag

My 9yo son shoots 1 moa at 700 yards about 270
