I certainly wasn't expecting Pryce to be so heavily involved with the book but it turned out to be an excellent choice to show the different reasons two different people had for joining the Empire. Zahn likes to include hidden references to people he knows in real life, usually through anagrams of names and I'd love to know which ones were present in this book.
Great list, I just finished the book last night. Another fun fact I noticed was the owner of the dojo where Pryce trained was a togorian named H'sishi, who was part of Talon Karrde's crew during the Hand of Thrawn series.
4 years later, finally have the time to start reading this Thrawn trilogy. The line about Snoke being the great evil from the unknown region but a smile on my face. Recalling all the truly great Snoke fan theories.
You didn't mention H'sishi, one of the sparring instructors at the dojo where Pryce went to get trained in hand to hand combat. She's a Togarian who was a part of smuggler Talon Karrde's crew in Legends lore.
Just finished the audiobook, all i was hoping for the whole time is that Eli lives. Good book will have to reread it to decide where it is on my favorite canon books but great book definitely worth the read for any Star Wars fan
Wait, no mention of H'sishi in the video? She was in Zahn's Legends trilogy as a relatively new smuggler in Karrde's organization. This book still left open that occurrence as a future possibility. Come to think of it, a lot of points in this book seemed like Zahn saying, how dare Disney wipe out my characters and plot points, I'll bring them back! the whole time I was reading this novel I was waiting for Karrde's to make an appearance. I hope Zahn gets to do Star Wars and specifically Thrawn again soon!
Slim413rd my list is 1) Battlefront Twilight Company 2) Lost Stars 3) Catalyst 4) Thrawn 5) Dark Disciple 6) Lords of the Sith 7) Bloodline 8) Life Debt 9) Ahoska 10) Empires End 11) Tarkin 12) Aftermath 13) New Dawn
I'm really happy that they kept a lot of his Legends past in Canon, but the twist of him actually going into the Empire and faking his exile for the Chiss is a good twist. I hope to see them in the future, if Benicio Del Toro isn't Ezra then I want him to be Thrawn.
Great video, just one little mistake that I realized at 4:52 . He did not actually confirm the Pantoran reference... he just said so in that moment because he did not want the people around him to know he understood Sy Bisti. XD
You know, the book just came out yesterday. It makes me nervous to click on any of your videos for the sake of spoilers when you come out with them so fast, but I'm glad we've got you in the Star Wars community!
I think Plagieous book would function great as a TV live action series. It doesnt require big space battles which would need a Cinema film budget. We would get to see Palpatine rise through the ranks of the senate as well as see his training. I also think I they bring in Maul and Nightsisters (we know in canon Sidious took Maul to punish Talzin) then they could function as the antagonists (as we cant have Plaguies or Sidious fighting Jedi, as that would reveal them).
We could have Jedi fights. As long as no Jedi were left alive, and witnesses are negligible, or will not be believed, but could be like a once per series type thing. You could have arcs where they hunted down sith pretenders etc. Could be a really interesting show. SOMEONE SEND THIS TO LUCASFILM
I just finished this book. It was my first experience with Thrown & Zahn's writing... and I can now see why people liked the character and Zahn's writing. I want MOAR. One thing about the timeline, though... IIRC, our first mention of Tarkin in this book already places him as a Grand Moff. That means "Tarkin" & "Catalyst" have already happened ("Catalyst" goes before "Tarkin", and the promotion to Grand Moff doesn't happen until the end of "Tarkin"). Did I get that right, LOL?
One thing you missed was the owner of that Dojo on Coruscant is named H'sishi. The same name of a warrior of the same people in legends that eventually joined up with Talon Karrde in the Hand of Thrawn duology.
Finally finished Thrawn, after having already read Outbound Flight and other Thrawn-related-Zahn books. Thank you for this video Alex... I watched it when it first came out, but of course it makes more sense now having finished the Thrawn book. Very helpful in linking the book to the Rebels animated series, and setting up the final season of Rebels this coming fall. I will be starting Survivor's Quest next, as I can't get enough of the Chiss Grand Admiral apparently. Keep up the great work, and let's hope that Thrawn stays in the canon for as long as possible.
I think that the new Canon isn't too bad all things considered, bringing Thrawn into it was definitely a good decision. Anyone remember the Arc Hammer from forces of Corruption? That would be kind of cool to see in the TV show.
This was fantastic! I read it at a slower pace than typical so that I could get all the information I could and I missed some of them. I also don't retain much between releases so didn't remember names. Thank you!
I have read Thrawn. I learned much about the geand admiral and I had to laugh when I read that he occupied an entire cargo bay of the Blood Crow, where he served in his early days, to store 'scrap' from the clone wars that he bought
I loved the book and Thrawn is easily my favorite character in the Star Wars universe. I found it interesting that there was no mention of The Force throughout the whole book. I know Thrawn isn't Force sensitive but considering how vital it is to Star Wars lore I found it to be a curious omission. The other thing, the mention of Wookie slaves in this book and elsewhere made me wonder about the utility of slaves in a system where mechanization was so advanced especially considering that things like food, water and presumably oxygen would have to be brought in and then consumed. I wonder if the slavery of Wookies had more to do with liquidation of Jedi loyalists than with the actual labor value of the creatures.
Yo it takes me a long time to read books. I know you said spoilers, but seriously how did you read it so fast? I know if you preordered you got it a day earlier but still?!
It might also be possible that audible could have given him an early copy. Reviewers can get early products to make sure they can get reviews out on the day of release.
I do like the fact that the novel even in it's Epilogue does not explicitly state whether Thrawn is dead or alive at the time of Eli's travels to the Chiss. We all expect Thrawn to be dead by the end of Rebels but there is nothing that says he HAS to be dead. More than ever I am wondering if was off in the unknown regions setting up Palpatines contingency.
Got one more fact for you When thrawe was attacked at the Academy he suggests the charges not be pressed on them, rather they be transferred, Deen lark sarcastically suggests mustafar, which of coarse is the reference to vaders castle, seen in rogue one and referenced in rebels 😃
Csilla - the Planet where Thrawn was born - btw is a Hungarian female name, a shorter version of the word Csillag, which means Star in the Hungarian language.
Could Thrawn still be alive around the time of Episode 8? Now hear me out. We know he was not in episodes 4-7, obviously. But could that be because he was sent out into Unknown Space, just like in Legends, sometime before episode 4 and has been out there ever since? We know from Aftermath that the Empire had lots of interest in Unknown Space, and given that Thrawn came from that area, would he not be a great commander to lead an expedition? I am trying to build this theory a little off his Legends character too. Came to power in the Empire; sent into Unknown Space; returns after the fall of the Empire. I think this could make a really good story in the new Canon. We are running out of time between Rebels and episode 4 and I don’t want Thrawn to die a meaningless death just to get him out of the way. So instead of killing him, send him off into Unknown Space to find whatever the Empire was looking for out there. Think of all the great stories we could have of him exploring Unknown Space. Maybe he even finds whatever it is that Snoke is. And the big question would be if Thrawn joins Snoke or not! What if he was to return in episode 8 or 9 but as an enemy to Snoke and the First Order? That would allow Thrawn to really be a ‘good guy’. The more I think about this, the more I like it. Is it even remotely possible? P.S. Great Channel Alex!
Wendy Slaby after reading the book I'm not so sure that Thrawn will necessarily be alive by the time of the new trilogy. That said we can still potentially see the Chiss Ascendancy playing a major role against snoke. Maybe see the return of an older more tactical Eli Vanto?
There was a planned episode of The Clone Wars that was going to involve them and the Lucasfilm Storygroup considers the unfinished episodes Csnon. So it could be them, no guarantees

You pointed out at one point that it was not clear thrawn new of darth vaders identity he knew perfectly well he predicted it at the very beginning Besides that this video was spectacular
Another detail I noticed is that the headmaster of the Imperial Academy on Coruscant, Deenlark, was already mentionned in Lost Stars, where he played a similar role.

Thank you Timothy zahn this man is obviously still a fan of legends and the stories he originally wrote and was a part of. I wonder how long it will take for him to write in Talon Karde and Mara Jade
Great facts about Thrawn, Alex. Thrawn and the Chiss are greatly trim and elegant people. It is compelling!!😮👍🌠 I want to read Zahn's books, Canon and Legends. And interesting to see Anakin met Thrawn during the Clone Wars; Anakin Skywalker is QUITE the extraordinaire for specific characters. Nice video!! ✨👍😀
I just finished listening to the audio book, and I have to say, not only is the book fantastic, but the voice acting/narration as well! This is my first reading of a Thrawn novel, and I will definitely be picking up the legends trilogy. Thrawn is a fantastic character that is unfortunately somewhat muted in Rebels; hopefully he gains a string of victories following Hera's capture. Wouldn't it be great if Rian Johnson's trilogy revolved around the Chiss Ascendancy and the threat they perceive to be greater than the Empire?
Patman 87 it is, originally, it was a fantasy flight game original creation for the game, x-wing, because there's no imperial ship that is the same size as the corellian corvette. It's nice to see it canon.
I thought the one in the trailer was just a different itteration of the old sith interceptor that Maul used in episode 1.Anyways,regardless of what it actually is,its not really something to really make a fuss about
Oovoo iv's canon story is almost identical to legends. The main difference is that Slave 1 is not the last of its kind in canon, since Hondo recognizes it as a "classic model"
This was a great book Thrawn is a great character also Zahn is fantastic Writer I hope your going to do this with Star Wars Battlefront II :Inferno Squadron the next canon book
Where did you find this? I only remember her wearing the standard grey officer uniform and the "propaganda art" picture on Wookieepedia with her in a Grand Admiral's uniform.
It's fan art, not the actual book cover and yes you are right it's incaccurate. On the book cover he is indeed depicted as grand admiral but not showing the rank plaque.
Star Wars: Biggs - The Darklighter Pilot- A Star Wars Story. it starts on Tatooine, as Biggs talks to Luke, 2 weeks before ANH. then we see him at the Rebel Starship, being taken on a secret mission to steal one of the last TIE defenders of the empire, after a long time sneaking around, and a short fight, he manages to take it. a huge Space Battle starts, with Biggs taking down TIEs with his Defender, eventually, a X-wing and Y-wing escor comes, with a rebel transport to take him to the base Biggs then is shown defending the U-wing with Jyn Erso from incoming imperial forces, until Red and blue Squadrons arrive. he takes down an imperial Star Destroyer's main cannons then we see him commanding the attack on Scarif from the rebel base during takeoff, then he goes to tatooine to tell Luke to join the rebellion. we then see him at the rebel base, preparing for an attack on the Death Star. would you like that, Alex/SW Explained?
Its alright but if you're *That* interested at the rogue one story then go ahead as it contains some story aspects that rogue one didnt explain correctly
It was a good read, not an amazing book though. I read it before Rogue One was released, so when I did see the movie, it just made the experience so much better.
I want to know how to get other book covers cuz I can't buy 3 books. I had preorder from Amazon hope u can help. Got to be available eventially out there, thanks?
I want to know more about the togruta female aboard the ship hauling tibana gas. She seemed like she was important but she was quickly forgotten. I know i sound like an idiot but was that meant to be ashoka?
Kind of a moot question since by the time I see the answer to this question I'll already have my own copy of the book and have found out already but, is his cannon full name still Mitth'raw'nuruodo? And Thrawn is his core name?
Did you notice the discrepancy in the Imperial Navy ranking system? This was the only part of the book that really confused me. Thrawn goes from Lieutenant, to Captain, to Commander, to Commodore, and then Admiral. This contradicts the Imperial rank structure that places Captain above Commander. In fact, in Ep. 5, Captain Piett is promoted to Admiral on the spot by Darth Vader. A promotion of that scale, when using the rank system in Thrawn, would be preposterous. Did I miss something while reading or did you notice this too?
I certainly wasn't expecting Pryce to be so heavily involved with the book but it turned out to be an excellent choice to show the different reasons two different people had for joining the Empire. Zahn likes to include hidden references to people he knows in real life, usually through anagrams of names and I'd love to know which ones were present in this book.
After reading this I don't want Thrawn to die on rebels, more Thrawn books!!!
Harry Jackson yes! yes! yes!!
Well he didn’t really die.
he might be in ep 9...
And in 2020, it’s confirmed by the Mandalorian that Thrawn is alive even after ROTJ!!!
I really liked how Thrawn expanded on Gov Pryce character. So many really good characters developed in the book.
Great list, I just finished the book last night. Another fun fact I noticed was the owner of the dojo where Pryce trained was a togorian named H'sishi, who was part of Talon Karrde's crew during the Hand of Thrawn series.
Joe Skuza I knew that name was familiar!
dang, good catch !

4 years later, finally have the time to start reading this Thrawn trilogy. The line about Snoke being the great evil from the unknown region but a smile on my face. Recalling all the truly great Snoke fan theories.
none made any since
You didn't mention H'sishi, one of the sparring instructors at the dojo where Pryce went to get trained in hand to hand combat. She's a Togarian who was a part of smuggler Talon Karrde's crew in Legends lore.
Socorro is Spanish for 'help'. The socorro system is thus the help system XD
Just finished the audiobook, all i was hoping for the whole time is that Eli lives. Good book will have to reread it to decide where it is on my favorite canon books but great book definitely worth the read for any Star Wars fan

Best Star Wars book. Ever.
Toad 1000 needs a movie

I have read Thrawn. I learned much about the geand admiral and I had to laugh when I read that he occupied an entire cargo bay of the Blood Crow, where he served in his early days, to store 'scrap' from the clone wars that he bought
Just finished this book and I absolutely loved it
In Thrawn me meet a character called Nightswan, we are also reminded of Vulture droids. Why are there so many Earth animal names in Star Wars?
translation from basic to english
Thomas Fiddimore dont forget at the end with the mention of belly up turtles
Plus Cortland he had the ships the Blood CROW and the Thunder WASP, come on Star Wars name stuff after your own animals. Blood Mynock, Thunder Shaak!
Well we know ducks are native to naboo
@@MetaphoricDragon and chickens are native to Endor
Just ordered this online. I eagerly await its arrival in my mail. Soon it will be mine. *Mine!*
Just finished this book, I love it!
I hope he helped create the First order. I really don't want him to die.
Nope. The first order is way too barbaric and Thrawn would not be involved in it.
No the first order came after thrawn tried overthrowing the new republic
I loved the book and Thrawn is easily my favorite character in the Star Wars universe. I found it interesting that there was no mention of The Force throughout the whole book. homerunproduction if book is good, anything is possible
Yeah I finished it yesterday lol it was really great. I literally couldn't stop reading!
lol I'm starting sense that what I lack is discipline in reading
It might also be possible that audible could have given him an early copy. Reviewers can get early products to make sure they can get reviews out on the day of release.
Yeah, if I have a good book, I could literally read it non-stop until I'm finished
I do like the fact that the novel even in it's Epilogue does not explicitly state whether Thrawn is dead or alive at the time of Eli's travels to the Chiss. Ryfir2203 and it was
i hope they aren't going to leave us hanging with Eli and the "threat". Screw snoak. bring the Vong on.
There was a planned episode of The Clone Wars that was going to involve them and the Lucasfilm Storygroup considers the unfinished episodes Csnon. So it could be them, no guarantees
Peter R I think Snoke is the threat their talking about.
Peter R a group of bandits could raip the first order... We need or the Hong or something new
Or the bong.
Your always first at starwars news 👍
This begs the question for Thrawn's fate: is he actually going to live this time (maybe even ditch the Empire since he's still loyal to the Chiss) or is Rukh still going to kill him?
Adrian Africa hopefully the former
It seems very logical to me that Thrawn will survive the entire affair. However the mere fact that Rukh got revealed could be an intentional sign of basicaly saying he'll get axed off.
Really glad they made the raider canon! Here's hoping the gladiator class is made canon next, love that design 😆
I'm looking forward to the future Thrawn videos
My favorite ester egg is when he comments on the commlinks being on the belt as inefficient, in the rank insignia would be a much better placement. Then Eli comments that the encryption hardware wouldn't fit ant the range would be small...I feel this is a jab at Star Trek and it makes me giggle.
I just finished it today, it is now my favorite book, if you have not read it, read it!
Wait so Thrawn was a double agent for the Chiss? So considering the description the Chiss were strong enough to challange the Empire then? Please do a video on them soon.
Where does Thrawn confirm Chiss and Pantorans may be related? I just finished the book and didn't see that anywhere
The owner of the Dojo that Pryce trained at was Talon Karrde's bodyguard in the "Hand of Thrawn Duology" by Zahn.
Given how much Zahn references his old works, I cannot wait to see how his new book ties to legends when it hits later this month
You pointed out at one point that it was not clear thrawn new of darth vaders identity he knew perfectly well he predicted it at the very beginning
Besides that this video was spectacular
verry good video! love tarkin. Can't wait to read the novel
H'sishi was the Togorian at the dojo. She worked for Karrde in Legends.
Actually one of the passages confirmed Thrawn knew Vader was Anakin.
I just finished the book and I didn't pick up on this. Any chance you could elaborate?
I believed he called Vader a "pet" one time and referenced Skywalker to the Emperor.
Another detail I noticed is that the headmaster of the Imperial Academy on Coruscant, Deenlark, was already mentionned in Lost Stars, where he played a similar role.
Do you know anything about the drawings on the bottom of Thrawn's flagship
Dynamite 60 it's the chimera
And for those who don't know, a chimera is: a mythological, fire-breathing monster, commonly represented with a lion's head, a goat's body, and a serpent's tail.
Vesuvi Timeaux Its a chimaera and not a chimera and a chimaera is a three-headed creature represented with spider legs, multiple stalked eyes, and two serpentine heads perched stop long barber necks. A chimaera is a Star Wars creature and a chimera is a Greek mythologie creature
Well, one learns something every day, huh?! Thank you for the info!!!
This book sounds even more better. Now i'm just waiting for my local bookstore to get shipments
What about the Togorian who runs the dojo? H'sishi, wasn't she one of Karrde's crew?
im so dumb i didnt realize that ahrinda was the same person as the rebels character until tarkin said"Governor Pryce"
No vid on battlefront 2??
They're getting ready for SW celebration apparently.
Mark 146 the trailer is leaked so hell do it when it's legit
joe pretty sure he's waiting for the full length trailer on the 15th
He's to busy making vids on legends.... still... 🙄
what about Hasseeshi? she was a smuggler with talon kardde in the thrawn trilogy and in the new book she was a martial arts instructor of sorts
Finally finished and can watch this :p
Thank you Timothy zahn this man is obviously still a fan of legends and the stories he originally wrote and was a part of. I wonder how long it will take for him to write in Talon Karde and Mara Jade
Great facts about Thrawn, Alex. Thrawn and the Chiss are greatly trim and elegant people. It is compelling!!😮👍🌠
I want to read Zahn's books, Canon and Legends. And interesting to see Anakin met Thrawn during the Clone Wars; Anakin Skywalker is QUITE the extraordinaire for specific characters.

Hey are victory star destroyers cannoned?
Kannan Nicholas yes, heavily
where does it say it in cannon?
Kannan Nicholas: I just looked it up and yes, they appeared in the Canon novel Tarkin and in Darth Vader comic issue 9. :)
Okay haha thanks you guys
Kannan Nicholas they are not canon. But there are many cannons on them, that's for sure
8:10 smiley face
Also, I want a Thrawn book series by Zahn so much!
Krayt Spit is meant after the tatooine beast: Krayt Dragon and not after the planet (Crait)
I'll have to watch Eli, I think he's turning into Rukh...
This is such a good book!
I think that the raider class corvette is the new star destroyer in Star Wars battle front 2 trailer!!! Like if agree
Patman 87 no.
Patman 87 it is, originally, it was a fantasy flight game original creation for the game, x-wing, because there's no imperial ship that is the same size as the corellian corvette. It's nice to see it canon.
Jacky I know but it looks a lot like the one in the trailer
I thought the one in the trailer was just a different itteration of the old sith interceptor that Maul used in episode 1.Anyways,regardless of what it actually is,its not really something to really make a fuss about
it is. go on wookieepedia to the raider-class corvette, canon page, and look at the sources.
Oovoo iv's canon story is almost identical to legends. The main difference is that Slave 1 is not the last of its kind in canon, since Hondo recognizes it as a "classic model"
Finally i finish the book about twenty hour of reading and it was so good i love Eli character
Fitty facts from Thrawn
This was a great book Thrawn is a great character also Zahn is fantastic Writer I hope your going to do this with Star Wars Battlefront II :Inferno Squadron the next canon book
Damn it I was about to do this for my RUclips yet you beaten me to it and I was reading the novel as you upload it but great video
ive just realized on the cover he has the wrong rank plaque
Then he shouldn't wear the white uniform of a Grand Admiral ...
Where did you find this? I only remember her wearing the standard grey officer uniform and the "propaganda art" picture on Wookieepedia with her in a Grand Admiral's uniform.
+Renewal AsP But he shouldn't have a Grand Admiral's uniform then
It's fan art, not the actual book cover and yes you are right it's incaccurate. On the book cover he is indeed depicted as grand admiral but not showing the rank plaque.
Question for everyone, who is your favorite Imperial Officer in Canon or Legends?
Thrawn or Tarkin
Grand Admiral Thrawn and Captain Pallaeon
Ron Kelley Tarkin!!
Does anyone like the Officers on the Death Star, like Colonel Yularen or General Tagge or Admiral Motti, there's alot to choose from?
Ron Kelley I liked Yularen in TCW and that one Rebels Episode, and I really enjoyed Tagge in Vader. But I've always hated Motti.
At 3:39 there is an image of thrawn in Boba Fett’s armor. Where is that from? Thank you.
If I'm not mistaken, the Raider class Corvette also appears in the new Battlefront II trailer?
Star Wars: Biggs - The Darklighter Pilot- A Star Wars Story.
it starts on Tatooine, as Biggs talks to Luke, 2 weeks before ANH.
then we see him at the Rebel Starship, being taken on a secret mission to steal one of the last TIE defenders of the empire, after a long time sneaking around, and a short fight, he manages to take it.
a huge Space Battle starts, with Biggs taking down TIEs with his Defender, eventually, a X-wing and Y-wing escor comes, with a rebel transport to take him to the base
Biggs then is shown defending the U-wing with Jyn Erso from incoming imperial forces, until Red and blue Squadrons arrive. he takes down an imperial Star Destroyer's main cannons
then we see him commanding the attack on Scarif from the rebel base during takeoff, then he goes to tatooine to tell Luke to join the rebellion.
we then see him at the rebel base, preparing for an attack on the Death Star.
would you like that, Alex/SW Explained?
Thanks for this really useful video (not sarcasm)
How good is the rogue one novel Catalyst by James Luceno? I am just starting to read it.
Carson Amstutz a lot of people loved it... I thought it was good, but not great
Its alright but if you're *That* interested at the rogue one story then go ahead as it contains some story aspects that rogue one didnt explain correctly
It was a good read, not an amazing book though. I read it before Rogue One was released, so when I did see the movie, it just made the experience so much better.
Carson Amstutz I'm reading it right now. It's great so far.
Wasn't the raider class corvette in the new battlefront 2 trailer?
Pellaeon is mentioned in the Rebels Finale.
I don't want to spoil myself, but the book isn't even sceduled for translation yet, so I'll just watch your vids to get my fix
I know i sound like an idiot but was that meant to be ashoka?
this is a really good book
Grand Admiral Thrawn for Presidency 2020!!!
B)
Anyone Remember the Star Destroyer Admonitor?
he had that before he had the chimera in legends, if i recall
Can you do a video listing all cannon books releases to date?
From the New Battlefront 2 trailer it looks like the Raider Corvette will be used by the Character in the New Story mode
3:41 why is he wearing that armor?!
that imperial raider ship is in the leaked battlefront 2 trailer
I'm having trouble finding the book on Audible, I searched "Thrawn" but I got seven Legends books and no mention of the new one :(
Does the book adress thrawn and commander sato's relationship. We had a hint of it in iron squadron
Scott Serrato He skips some of the ranks. It isn't necessary to going through all the ranks, i suppose
jeez .. even Star Wars characters think that the Death Star is dumb :D Why they keep building them!?
Martin Zyka
two names:
Palpatine & Tarkin
Did the raider class corvette appear in the recently leaked battlefront 2 trailer?
I can't find the book on Audible
I wish there was a galaxy wide threat that forced the rebels and the empire to work together to stop that new cannon threat
