Freddie Mercury was a man of many talents and many different sides. The songs he wrote for and with Queen filled stadiums around the globe and have rightly gone down in history, but he also embarked on a solo career that took him from the clubs of Munich and New York to the great opera houses of the world.
He was the ultimate showman, but he kept his private life away from the prying eyes of the media; a larger than life rock star who loved disco, classical music and ballet. He was a restless spirit, a true chameleon who revelled in his own contradictions.
All the different sides of this iconic musician can be found on Freddie Mercury: Messenger Of The Gods - The Singles. All formats released September 2nd 2016.
This wonderful 1987 video, capturing Freddie Mercury's unforgettable collaboration with Spanish opera diva Montserrat Caballé, accompanied the very first single from the 'Barcelona' album (which was to follow a full year later). This unexpected and unlikely merging of talent took the world by storm, and this was the first of three singles released from the album. The Director was David Mallet and it was filmed at Pinewood Studios in London. The single was released in the UK on 26th October 1987.

Probably the BEST collaboration of all time. To stand next to a soprano like monserat and hold your own is truly amazing. I actually cried on the day he died. I watched him at the live aid in wembley stadium and I feel blessed to have been In the presence of greatness.

Except that he didn't... every half serious classical music critic laughed at his performance. And it's public knowledge that when Montserrat first met Freddie, she told the producer "but you told me he was going to be a lyric tenor..." In the end, money prevailed and she went along with it.

What makes this thrilling is Freddy's muscular vocals combined with Caballe's beautiful but equally powerful voice. She matches him in sheer firepower, moves like the wind, and can hold a note longer than a mortgage company.

@@katrinablackwell5174 Thank you. I'm not an opera specialist, nor much interested in rock music, but they were an inspired duo. It's the magic of the music that brought them together. Freddy said that Monstserrat "IS music", and I have no doubt that this is true for both of them. If only they had recorded more-- Freddy in opera and Caballe in pop music. For them, It's like turning on a faucet, and the music pours out.

@@BELINDA_LANE Which part of my comment was ambiguous? The part where I say it was "played"?
Assuming -by your lack of knowledge over this -you were either not born yet, or too young to know, I will elaborate...
When they announced that the 1992 Olympics would be held in Barcelona, they asked Caballé to produce a song for the games. She then asked Freddie to do a collaboration. He and Mike Moran (the conductor you see in the video who looks like Brian May) then co-wrote this song and produced the resultant music video we see here. The song was released in 1987 and the video in 1988 -and everyone was excited to see it.
Freddie died in 1991, and therefore could obviously not perform live.
So, when the 1992 Olympic games were opened, they played this video in the stadium and cities and broadcasted it to all TV stations worldwide. It was a bittersweet moment for everyone, and this will always be special to everyone who attended or saw the opening of the Olympic games.

@@BELINDA_LANE Here is a vid of the opening Ceremony. You will see for this specific broadcast, they played the song right in the beginning. On the ground -in the stadium and the city (and some TV stations) -they played the music video: ruclips.net/video/IzGCXdX6gig/видео.html
TV Stations had to buy the rights to the music video to show it, so while all of them played the song, not all of them showed the music video. It was however, shown to everyone in the city.

What's also worth noting is that, contrary to some other cities that organised the Olympics, everything built for the event is still in use. The Olympic stadium dated from 1929, and FC Barcelona currently play there. The swimming pool is still in use, and the Olympic Village is now an up-market residential area. There's very much a before and an after 1992 in Barcelona.
