    Fantastic tips. I always cringed when tossing out failed paintings done on sanded papers... just a waste of money and resource. So happy for this video. Thanks!! Can't say it enough, but it's such a pleasure watching you paint.

    I have one of those boxes as well. Don't have the heart to throw them away. Thank you for showing me how to reuse them. I've searched everywhere for the fixative and everyone is out of stock. Does anyone know who has it or has it been discontinued? What do you recommend as a replacement?

  • @MrsTigerbalm
    @MrsTigerbalm 3 года назад

    Oh this gives me the heart to open the ‘abandoned’ paintings box and make some ‘painting with abandon’ experiments! Does the wetting need to be with alcohol or would water work too? Perhaps I should just try and see!

    • @MrsTigerbalm
      @MrsTigerbalm 3 года назад

      Also…does wetting ‘unfil’ the tooth of the paper, just as brushing off will?

    • @KarenMargulis
      @KarenMargulis  3 года назад +1

      You can use any liquid to do a wet underpainting. It depends on how thick the pastel or medium is. It will still fill the tooth especially if it is too thick.

    I am addicted to your demos Karen. They are so informative! I do have a question about using the workable fixative. The fact that the Blair is low odor kind of suggests that if you can’t smell it, it’s safe to use inside but I thought it was only safe to either have really good ventilation or wear a mask if spraying inside. Or else spray outside. What are your thoughts on this? Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful skills with us!

    • @KarenMargulis
      @KarenMargulis  10 месяцев назад

      Thanks for watching!! Blair is no longer available so I am now using rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle. I did use the Blair inside as I have great ventilation but I would never use any other fixative inside!

    How about canvas board? Or store stretched canvas? Recycling those types? Edit: Those old canvases were painted with Acrylic Paints. No Gesso involved. Thanks.

    • @KarenMargulis
      @KarenMargulis  3 года назад

      Sure you can paint pastel over them but the texture of the canvas is very different from pastel papers. Also if the acrylic paint is too thick pastel won't stick to it without some clear gesso or pastel primer of some kind.

    Question: When you reuse duds what happens with the sprayed area?

    • @KarenMargulis
      @KarenMargulis  3 года назад +1

      Nothing really. If the original pastel layer is on the thick side you might have a little less tooth to the paper but you can still paint over the sprayed /liquified areas once it has dried!

    How do you keep it from wrinkling, warping? Tried this with a painting I didn't like but it was on non sanded paper, and it wrinkled terribly.

  • @dawnarobertson9577
    @dawnarobertson9577 Год назад

    OH! If only . . . I did a pastel painting on pastel Matt; it turned out great . . . Until I sprayed archival fixative. One, thin coat. The top layers disappeared; the surface turned granular; the painting was ruined. I don’t even think I could rework this over the fixative, nor do I want to. Was it the brand of pastels? The paper? The fixative? All I know is: I feel pastels are too easily smudged and need to be “fixed,” and what looks fleetingly brilliant becomes a nasty mess at completion. I’m thinking of turning all these pastels into gouache . . .

    • @KarenMargulis
      @KarenMargulis  Год назад +1

      Thanks for watching!! It was probably the combination of the fixative and paper type. I never use a final fixative. Yes pastels can be smudged but I protect mine under glassine paper until they can be framed under glass and they do fine. They maintain the wonderful vibrancy and luminosity this way!

  • @bettychamberlain1446
    @bettychamberlain1446 2 года назад

    Do you have to cover with glass when framing pastels?

    • @KarenMargulis
      @KarenMargulis  2 года назад

      Yes but you can get tru vue museum glass which is practicality invisible. Pastel can smudge if not under glass.

    How do you keep your paper from curling up? Is there a trick I’ve missed along the way?

    • @KarenMargulis
      @KarenMargulis  3 года назад

      It depends on the type of paper and when and why it is curling. If it is sanded paper and is curled before you use it you can try heavy books of even iron it flat. If it curls due to a wet underpainting or wet media application, placing it under heavy books overnight will usually flatten it out.

    • @stephaniemccollum8220
      @stephaniemccollum8220 3 года назад

      @@KarenMargulis thank you. I use Uart paper and live in a semi-humid climate and continue to have that problem. I’ll get out my iron and some heavy books and use those to solve the problem. Thanks!

    I really enjoyed this demo. However can we only recycle sanded papers that will accept liquids? I’ve tried doing some wet under paintings and ended up with buckled paper even though I laid it flat with heavy books overnight. Are we needing brand specific papers?

    • @KarenMargulis
      @KarenMargulis  3 года назад

      Some sanded papers such as LaCarte can't get wet but I have been able to recycle most other sanded papers. I do find that Uart can buckle if I get it too saturated. LuxArchival is the best imo at the moment.

    • @dianaromig732
      @dianaromig732 3 года назад

      @@KarenMargulis So would using rubbing alcohol be a better liquid than water?

    • @KarenMargulis
      @KarenMargulis  3 года назад +1

      @@dianaromig732 Not really. Alcohol tends to dry a bit quicker than water and sometimes results in more interesting drips as it evaporates but really any liquid works.
