I saw color purple in New York with Fantasia. I can tell you there was not a dry eye in the theater when she sang this. It hit deep. I love the movie and the Broadway play was so wonderful. Fantasia is an angel!
Fantasia's success here isn't that she has necessarily the biggest voice, nor is she known as an actor, but her commitment to this role and the emotion she portrays. One could try to pass this off as stunt casting, but when she is on that stage, she is Celie 100%. Fantasia does something I don't know if Cynthia Erivo pulls off. Fantasia allows herself to be ugly. I am by no means saying Fantasia herself is ugly, in fact, she is stunning when she dresses up. Celie isn't the most physically attractive person and I would find it hard to believe that someone would call someone that looks like Cynthia Erivo ugly and beat her for it. But Fantasia brings it down and isn't worried about being the face on the poster to sell tickets.

I remember saving up my money in college to see this play. It was my first Broadway show and it didn't disappoint. I still get chills each time I watch this performance.
I was fortunate enough to see the Color Purple with Fantasia. The ONLY time I've cried at a show. Fantasia is INCREDIBLE! It's a disgrace that she didn't win a Tony for her performance.
honestly, Fanatsia is always going to be my Celie. Cynthia Erivo is amazingly talented and has a stunning voice. But there is something about the way Fantasia sings this that it just does something to your soul. She embodies the years of pain and heartbreak but still choosing life, that is this song, all in her raw real and unbelievably powerful vocals. So much respect for her as an artist.

However, for Cynthia, congratulations on her nabbing the role of Elphaba in the movie version of Wicked.
The difference between Fantasia and Cynthia is that Fantasia is black church bred. It is what makes her performance hit harder for me. Her gospel style singing fits the character and setting way better. Cynthia has a clearer voice with obviously better technique, but it sounds too pretty for the character and it just doesn't emotionally stir me.
Now that they’re doing a live adaptation of this I’m predicting that Fantasia is going to make history and win an Oscar for best actress in a LEADING role.

Fantasia is only 32 years old, which is about the same age Whoopi was when she did the film. LaChanze originated the role on Broadway in her mid 40s. Cynthis Erivo is playing the role now at age 27. Celie ages from 14 years old to 50-something throughout the story.
I drove from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to New York City just to see Fantasia and hear her sing. I'm telling y'all I witness GREATEST! She was phenomenal and empowering, I just love this woman and I'm thankful God has blessed her life. Fantasia has come full circle and 2024 she gonna win EVERYTHING! I read her book "Life Isn't A Fairy Tale" twice and she stated ...to much is given is required! She is definitely a QUEEN!

It's amazing she made any of the shows to begin with and even more so how she still slayed every tough New York critic often while singing with blood in her mouth.

honestly, Fanatsia is always going to be my Celie. Cynthia Erivo is amazingly talented and has a stunning voice. But there is something about the way Fantasia sings this that it just does something to your soul. She embodies the years of pain and heartbreak but still choosing life, that is this song, all in her raw real and unbelievably powerful vocals. So much respect for her as an artist.

Our experience with colorism is unique…. and a lot of it parallels with fantasias real life. I can not wait to see her win her this Oscar!

I get it Fantasia is a monster! You honestly can’t compare any of them, but for me, Cynthia still has my favorite rendition! Her voice just kills me. Also, the opt up on “sing” makes me scream out loud because it feels so raw and emotional. They both bring their entire selves to the role! It’s apples and oranges really tho!

I don’t want to compare between Fantasia and Cynthia Erivo, because they both play and sing as Cely with their hearts and souls of Cely. The difference between Fantasia & Cynthia is the way they sing this song as far as runs, will they do low notes or high notes. Congratulations to Fantasia who will reprise her role as Cely in the film version of The Color Purple stage musical. However, for Cynthia, congratulations on her nabbing the role of Elphaba in the movie version of Wicked.

The difference between Fantasia and Cynthia is that Fantasia is black church bred. It is what makes her performance hit harder for me. Her gospel style singing fits the character and setting way better. Cynthia has a clearer voice with obviously better technique, but it sounds too pretty for the character and it just doesn't emotionally stir me.

BEST CELIE. Hands down!!!! The emotion she packed into the role brought an authenticity that no other actress has brought to the part. She MUST be Celie should they ever do a film version of the musical.

Fantasia is only 32 years old, which is about the same age Whoopi was when she did the film. LaChanze originated the role on Broadway in her mid 40s. Cynthis Erivo is playing the role now at age 27. Celie ages from 14 years old to 50-something throughout the story.

I drove from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to New York City just to see Fantasia and hear her sing. I'm telling y'all I witness GREATEST! She was phenomenal and empowering, I just love this woman and I'm thankful God has blessed her life. Fantasia has come full circle and 2024 she gonna win EVERYTHING! I read her book "Life Isn't A Fairy Tale" twice and she stated ...to much is given is required! She is definitely a QUEEN!
