Broadway 2007.....Watch Fantasia in another number from this "Color Purple" performance at • FANTASIA in THE COLOR ... and the finale at • FANTASIA The Color Pur...
Doesn't matter if you prefer Fantasia, Cynthia or any of the other incredible women that have sung this song... If they connected and gave with their entire heart every single lyric written in this piece, then they deserve all of the recognition they receive for being strong enough to go through that 8 times a week.
Just for the 8 times a week alone... that is a lot. Emotionally it takes something out of you to play that type of roll and deliver with emotion like that. They both have amazing voices, and sang it well.
Mark my words right now..Once the color purple movie releases, Fantasia is going to sweep all the acting awards. Fantasia deserves her resurgence into the industry and this will be the moment she needs to remind us why she’s a legend. Too many folks don’t put her in the conversation of greats, well this movie will do just that. Hold me to it…
omg I had no idea this was coming to theaters!!!!!!!! So glad they cast Fantasia! She’s amazing even if others have done this role well. She did it best!!!!
I will be shocked if there isn't bigtime cheering & applause after this song plays in the movie theaters. Sure it won't be like seeing it performed live but this song is just so great & Fantasia's performance of it in the movie is sure to be just as awesome as it is here!
No one can act real suffering. Only life can give you that. The way Fantasia sings this song, really makes me want to live. I can't watch this without crying my heart out. Thank you for this huge inspiration!
Andrea Miranda Fantasia's version brings more emotion, she focus more on the acting what makes her singing come out as real suffering. But I think her life experiences help too.
I actually went to see it on Broadway while she was still starring in it. Plus she's is from my home state and still resides in NC. Also, she dont live far from me. When I first heard this song live, I was in tears... I'm still like that now when she sings it
LaChanze is vocal perfection. I loved her as Celie and she created the character...but Fantasia LIVES this song. I have a very poor quality mp3 of Fantasia's final Broadway performance of 'I'm Here' and it makes me cry every time I hear it.
When Tasia sings "tawlest tree" and not "tallest tree" shows you that this song is meant to be sung from deepest of your soul!! Fave version of this song..
I love how Fantasia really embodied an older woman that’s worked her ass to bone for many years. She walks around as if her body is just exhausted and broken. She really nailed the acting of this character.
Seriously! I’ve seen seasoned actors in the best aging makeup you’ve ever seen and they don’t have the correct walk or anything , totally throws it off
This is a great comment. I saw somebody said they preferred Cynthia because Cynthia’s version sounds and looks like someone triumph. You can’t just erase what the body has gone through out life, by the end of this story she is exhausted and broken and comes to a realization and Fantasia nailed it.
Remember Fantasia said in this time of her life. She was in a sad era ..she was going through a tough time personally... She took that and embodied the role so well. Props to her resilence
Kevin E. Taylor , you speak of your Momma as if she's no longer with us. Lawd...I miss mine so very much! I lost her to cancer 11 years ago but it feels just like yesterday she was here. Glad your Momma enjoyed Fantasia, and that it got her out her seat.
I knew Fantasia when she was little. She came to a small town named Anniston, Alabama where she fell in love with my mother. Years after my mother passed, I found a tape that she did for my mother. Knowing that a Star, could cherish an old grandmother make me proud to say “ I knew her when she was a little girl running around outside of the church that her grandparents had came to perform. “ Fantasia , I bow to you to say thank you for the happiness you gave Mrs. Watts. She watched your career and talked proudly about you all the time. Fantasia is truly a child of God. We love you.
Let's Hope And Pray So! Because if she wins a Oscar for Best Actress she will be making History!! Of The Decade Because no black woman has Won for Best Leading Actress Since HALLE BERRY BACK IN 2002! So let's pray we can witness More Greatness to come! 🙏🙏
@@beenhim9229I’m not sure I’d say that. I think they both could’ve killed. I’d say I was expecting Cynthia based on more film experience and she recently did the show, but since she was already casted for wicked I assumed it would be Fantasia!
fantasia carries the sufferings of centuries in her voice, her willingness to bring forth those feelings for the rest of the world is truly remarkable. most of us choose to keep them deeply buried
Never forget when she won American Idol, after she was announced the winner and she sang, she broke down and SOBBED. They actually cut the mike after a while.
I had the priviledge and pleasure to see Fantasia perform this on Broadway. The raw emotion. The love. The pain. I cried my eyes out. Best performance I have ever seen. Hands down.
I can’t get over how beautiful her “take a deep breath is”! You can truly feel the overwhelming emotion and struggle to confront the trauma in that one line!
Fantasia is one of those singers/performers who sing from DEEP DEEP inside the soul. I cry about 75 percent of the time when I hear her sing. And have since American Idol, especially “Summertime”. Geez, what a gift. No wonder she was completely drained. After performing this over and over again.
Had to revisit this video after seeing the movie casting. God, she’s giving everything. I’m gonna weep in the theater when this movie comes out, I just know it.
Fantasia: From the very moment she sang "Summertime," I became a dyed-in-the-wool believer!!! She is simply a talent, whose time has FINALLY come. Go forth my sister and reap the fruit. You deserve it!!!
honestly, Fanatsia is always going to be my Celie. Cynthia Erivo is amazingly talented and has a stunning voice. But there is something about the way Fantasia sings this that it just does something to your soul. She embodies the years of pain and heartbreak but still choosing life, that is this song, all in her raw real and unbelievably powerful vocals. So much respect for her as an artist.
Cynthia's was incredibly impressive and more technically sound. Fantasias performance is literally gut-wrentching and makes you just want to break down and sob for hours.
I gotta be honest, I love Cynthia's version but her singing is a little too pretty for me. I prefer Fantasia's, there's a rawness there that is more true to the character and her struggles. I truly feel it. When Fantasia performs I don't just see her acting, I see Celie's pain, her pain, the pain of millions of black women that have struggled over the centuries.
Definitely have to agree i love Cynthias version and it's because it's pretty and poised but Fantasia delivers like no one else. It's not acting it's real.
I saw color purple in New York with Fantasia. I can tell you there was not a dry eye in the theater when she sang this. It hit deep. I love the movie and the Broadway play was so wonderful. Fantasia is an angel!
I alway felt Fantasia is an old soul. Someone who has lived many lives and all that DNA has brought her to interpret a song like this. This isn't singing; this a beautiful, gut-wrenching experience.
I get it Fantasia is a monster! You honestly can’t compare any of them, but for me, Cynthia still has my favorite rendition! Her voice just kills me. Also, the opt up on “sing” makes me scream out loud because it feels so raw and emotional. They both bring their entire selves to the role! It’s apples and oranges really tho!
I was fortunate enough to see the Color Purple with Fantasia. The ONLY time I've cried at a show. Fantasia is INCREDIBLE! It's a disgrace that she didn't win a Tony for her performance.
How many of us are here again (or for the first time) after hearing the news that Fantasia will be playing Celie in The Color Purple movie musical! So happy for her!
BEST CELIE. Hands down!!!! The emotion she packed into the role brought an authenticity that no other actress has brought to the part. She MUST be Celie should they ever do a film version of the musical.
Fantasia is only 32 years old, which is about the same age Whoopi was when she did the film. LaChanze originated the role on Broadway in her mid 40s. Cynthis Erivo is playing the role now at age 27. Celie ages from 14 years old to 50-something throughout the story.
BREAKING NEWS: Fantasia is going to reprise the role of "Celie" in the upcoming film version of THE COLOR PURPLE musical!!! WOW!!! I smell an Oscar coming.
Fantasia sang that song like she know what she was singing about. It was a lot of truth in that song for her. God bless you Fantasia God bless you to God be all the glory.❤🎉
Fantasia's success here isn't that she has necessarily the biggest voice, nor is she known as an actor, but her commitment to this role and the emotion she portrays. One could try to pass this off as stunt casting, but when she is on that stage, she is Celie 100%. Fantasia does something I don't know if Cynthia Erivo pulls off. Fantasia allows herself to be ugly. I am by no means saying Fantasia herself is ugly, in fact, she is stunning when she dresses up. Celie isn't the most physically attractive person and I would find it hard to believe that someone would call someone that looks like Cynthia Erivo ugly and beat her for it. But Fantasia brings it down and isn't worried about being the face on the poster to sell tickets.
+Zach T Except that she missed most of the shows she was supposed to do and never explained why and had to go on Oprah and apologize and explain her self... not very committed if you ask me. Lol.
Luigi Kwok EXACTLY !!! People were being so cruel and people don't realize... THEY PAID TO SEE THE SHOW ! There's no guarantee a certain performer will be there & she had tumor for Christ sakes !
kyle nicholson No need to lie on Fantasia to make a better case for why you prefer Cynthia. Fantasia was singing her heart out with tumors in her throat for who knows how long. It's amazing she made any of the shows to begin with and even more so how she still slayed every tough New York critic often while singing with blood in her mouth.
I remember saving up my money in college to see this play. It was my first Broadway show and it didn't disappoint. I still get chills each time I watch this performance.
Now that they’re doing a live adaptation of this I’m predicting that Fantasia is going to make history and win an Oscar for best actress in a LEADING role.
I love Cynthia, her voice is the truth… but fantasia , Fantasia … this is the difference in casting an African American over a Afro British person. Our experience here in America is unique. Our experience with colorism is unique…. and a lot of it parallels with fantasias real life. I can not wait to see her win her this Oscar!
I disagree Tasia is from the church she got that old soul in her voice I bet she can throw down in the kitchen too. but on the other hand Cyn might be British but SHE'S STILL BLACK we have no idea what she went through over there what folks go through over there
colorism? they have the most cases in Africa/Nigeria you don't see all those ppl lightning their skin cause of their own self hate girl get outta here with that foolishness
If I'm 100% honest, I think this film is going to do well due to the fact the cast has not one single Brit in there. The entire cast is African-American
@@sarahb-rh9dd you have no reading comprehension. Like I said our experience here in the states is unique. And Fantasia translated that very well in her singing . If you need proif , just watch Cynthia’s Harriet Tubman. Quite laughable, surface level, and just not GOOD.
I drove from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to New York City just to see Fantasia and hear her sing. I'm telling y'all I witness GREATEST! She was phenomenal and empowering, I just love this woman and I'm thankful God has blessed her life. Fantasia has come full circle and 2024 she gonna win EVERYTHING! I read her book "Life Isn't A Fairy Tale" twice and she stated ...to much is given is required! She is definitely a QUEEN!
And Ladies and Gentleman THIS is our Celie coming to the big screen!! Get that Oscar ready now!!! We're about to have 2 Oscar winners from American Idol. So glad they chose Fantasia to revive this for the the big screen adaptation.

Yea she had to leave the show because at the time she had vocal chord surgery if I remember correctly. She didn’t finish out her run on broadway 🎭
Still with us? People don't generally die from nodes caused from vocal fatigue/abuse.

Now that they’re doing a live adaptation of this I’m predicting that Fantasia is going to make history and win an Oscar for best actress in a LEADING role.
What’s sad is that Whoopi should have won an Oscar back when the original came out. She was superb and they snubbed her. 😒
That sob right before the last noted ENDED me! 😭
OMG. Nobody does it like Fantasia. She brings tears to your eyes 😢❤❤❤
Here after she was announced for the movie. The best choice.
I witnessed it in person and she was amazing!!!
I did too,it was beautiful!!!
I did as well I was crying my mother looked at me and was like why are u crying,I told her this song touched something inside of me
I wish i did! But i never been to NYC and i was young
Fantasia is the best because she has soul, she has the accent, passion and she has lived Celie life before
i've been looking for this specific video for quite awhile. good thing it showed up in my recommended lol
Providence
@@sarahb-rh9dd you sat there and read none of my comment. I don’t have to know what she went though. You can hear it in the renditions of the songs .
@@sarahb-rh9dd you have no reading comprehension. Like I said our experience here in the states is unique. And Fantasia translated that very well in her singing . If you need proif , just watch Cynthia’s Harriet Tubman. Quite laughable, surface level, and just not GOOD.
This one right here is gonna win the Oscar!
SAANGGG, Sis!
Fantasia has just gotten better since this. She's always been my Celie.
She and Celie have struggled so much. I can tell this was a place for her to channel the rough spot into beautiful music.
Fantasía sings with the emotions the movie needs.
Oh MY GOD! What was that! The most perfect rendition of this song EVER!
David Berto check out Cynthia Erivo's version
*waving that church handkerchief!* Yes!!
"I'm beautiful" brought me to tears
Doing this show 7 times a week must wreck your soul
Who's bawling after watching this?..
Fantasia is an amazing story teller.. I really felt her performance.. 😭💕
Took my Grandchildren to see Fantasia on Broadway ... They still talk about her incredible performance! She was Amazing!
The emotion in her voice has me in tears.
And Ladies and Gentleman THIS is our Celie coming to the big screen!! Get that Oscar ready now!!! We're about to have 2 Oscar winners from American Idol. So glad they chose Fantasia to revive this for the the big screen adaptation.
I'm hoping to be amazed as i was with Jennifer Hudson
Man! The woman can really act! (I'm not especially surprised by that, just really impressed at what she achieves here.) Truly a gorgeous performance.
AvalonMorley Act and Sing, it's hard to do just one. Imagine to do both greatly.
I always believed this child was in such pain during the Broadway play and the day today was just to much; she did such a spectacular job.
Here after the amazing trailer
