      It’s good for me to know because I’m extroverted and love talking with Filipinos and humoring them. Getting them laughing is great because they really like to laugh and kid around. Frankly, Americans don’t care how proficient anyone is at English. We just don’t care at all and don’t expect that everyone can do it. However, when I hear Filipinos sing in English so well or have any English skills, I am really impressed. Truthfully 98% of Filipinos can speak better English than I can speak Tagalog. Someday, I will devote serious time and learn the language.

    I really enjoyed this interview! I’m a Filipino American. Like so many others, my parents did not teach me Tagalog-they wanted me to assimilate into American culture. It’s one of my biggest regrets that I never learned. I’m 66 years old now and feel that it would be harder for me to learn. I do know a few words and phrases. I took Spanish in high school in the early 1970’s. I live in Maryland.

      I'm a caucasian Canadian married to a Pinay I met at UBC during our graduate studies, but live in the US. You can assimilate into any culture by learning the language or still maintaining your heritage. My daughter was born and raised in Canada and is fluent in Tagalog. On my part, I need to learn the language because I like it! I am articulate in Tagalog and enjoy with Filipino friends.

      I’m glad that you were able to learn Tagalog and be a part of the Filipino community. The funny thing is that I grew up with a large Filipino community. All of the parents were part of or helped create a large Filipino American organization. A couple started teaching us kids Filipino folk dances-we performed at events with beautifully made costumes. I did it from elementary school through high school age. And a generation of kids after me and my siblings followed. There were lots of gatherings with lots of Filipino food. I did feel that sometimes the kids who did come from the Philippines and knew how to speak Tagalog looked down on us who didn’t. I’m married to an Anglo American with an English/Irish/Italian/Croatian heritage, and our daughters and grandchildren are very proud of their Filipino heritage. My daughters went to the Philippines for the first time in 2017 and loved it. My dream is to bring my eleven grandchildren there, but it would be a huge expense, and a few are in college or are getting ready to go. None of my Filipino American friends I grew up with speak Tagalog. A lot of our parents have passed.

    As a transplanted Filipino living in the US, it’s easier to communicate with Americans in an office setting, because the English we learn is formal English. It’s is a little bit different in a social setting since we are brought up interacting socially in Tagalog and Taglish which is really not understood if you are in a group with non Tagalog speakers.

    Great interaction, Jared and Anne! However, and considering the centerpiece or your channel, in general, is Tagalog-speaking non-Filipinos, I thought the "vlog mission" would have been more impactful to your predominantly Tagalog-aware subscribers/viewers (I don't have the statistics to back it up.) had your conversation been directed towards a more Tagalog approach, 75% for example. Afterall, I will venture to say that that's what enticed viewers to your channel. 🙂

    Jared made a very good point! A vital key to having deep connections and friendship is learning the language.
    You'll notice that even full blooded Filipinos who grew in America and spoke no Tagalog at all, are struggling to find real friendships here. Whereas, foreigners who are at least putting an effort, TRYING to learn the language are well-loved and respected. Kahit mali-mali yan, nakakatuwa. Pag nakitaan ka ng kahit konting EFFORT, that's enough to break the ice.

    Yeah, in my experience most filipinos are terrified of speaking english with americans. More often than not they say the first word or two of a sentence and giggle and sometimes hide... But I don't think it's so much that they don't want to talk to foreigners or think foreigners will tease them as it is actually a part of filipino culture to tease each other about their english, which makes them very insecure on a subconscious level when a native speaker is around. Seriously, more than once I've had filipinos running competitions to see who could speak to me in english the most times in a given time period, and man or woman, they giggle their heads off with each attempt...and I hear them mocking each other for mispronunciations and such, and I would never do that to someone speaking their second language... I know it is all just fun between them, but it seems to create a fear of "imperfect" conversation with foreigners at a greater level than I've experienced in any other country, even though the of filipinos are fluent in english words, simply with heavy accents (but not nearly as heavy as accents in new zealand, ireland, scottland, south africa, india, north carolina)... Also, filipinos laugh their heads off whenever I try to speak their mouth violating consecutive vowels.
    Dear Filipino Friends: Americans may not understand every word you say, but we appreciate it every time you speak your second or third language to facilitate communication, which is probably a lot better than our tagalog...we're certainly not going to think less of you if you struggle to pronounce words like "tangy", "pasta", and "almond" the same way we do...though we might attempt to help you americanize your pronunciation ;o)

    • @Doing_Time
      @Doing_Time 5 месяцев назад +1

      Also, my wife (filipina) and I have known each other 27 years (married 20)...we didn't move to US until she was 29, but I tease her because I'm more comfortable in filipino culture than she is...and filipino time --> she hates it with a passion...goodness, she wears me down: if we're on pace to only be 20 minutes early for any kind of appointment she gets all intense and might even start lecturing me about it (I've learned to sit quietly until the appointment has been consummated)...don't get me wrong, like any good american I've like been late for one appointment in my life (car wouldn't start), but she's next level on the being on time thing... I think contracting with philippine government for a couple years drove her particularly nuts.

    as a filipino, i can say na pwede mo gamitin ang "po" kahit sa makakausap mo na hindi po alam kung matanda o bata sya sa iyo, inshort kahit anong edad pwede ka mag po as a respect sa makakausap mo.. parang may psychological thingy yun na kapag gumamit ka una ng po sa makakausap mo nagiging magalang din sila sayo. but im not generalizing na lahat. so ayun 😊

    Don't eat hotdog; My brother used to work in the factory, he said, even the animal tumor is included when grinding meat. He reckon he will never eat hotdog or sausage again.

    I have a good time watching your conversation. Ann is very charming that's reason how your husband was captivated by her. I can understand Ann's 'difficulty' interacting with Filipinos in the Philippines. Filipinos are by nature usually shy. But why complicates it is not because they can't speak English nor the way they speak English. The reason is that Filipinos, although they can understand English, they have a hard time expressing what they want to say in English. Knowing English is not the same as speaking English. Overtime, Filipinos are sociable, you just have to find ways to break the barrier. Hope you enjoy the Philippines.
