- Aether Studios is creating the next generation of platform fighter. Currently targeting 2024, our goal is to create our dream fighting game by taking our successes from Rivals of Aether and expanding on the formula in all the right ways for Rivals 2.

The people who are complaining now that it’s coming out in 2024 would be the sam people complaining that it’s underdeveloped if it came out early
Poeple need to be patient.
sam
They said that a beta is in 2023 witch could mean early access but could also be a closed or open beta so let's not get our hopes up too much
I actually got hyped about the 2024 part ...take your time
@@killuminati8174 Same, it’s already looking amazing and I *can* wait til the full release
The animation looks great. So many smash inspired games end up with weird, floaty, stiff animations, which bugs me so much. Hoping this will be just as great as the original
Lord, thank you for saying inspired.
Idk to me the animations looks stiffer than the first game. If it ends up feeling the same I’ll eat my words but I’m concerned it’ll be floatier
@@DuskLegend yeah the 2d sprites are animated a lot better because you can put more attention to detail in each frame than 3d. But in the grand scheme of smash like games it definitely has much higher quality animations
And this game isn't even finished yet, so if there is room for improvement to be seen here, then we'll definitely be able to see those improvements the next time they decide to show off this game again (which hopefully won't be too long)
Multiverses in a nutshell lol
I hope they have the steam workshop again. That would be really fun to see 3d modded characters
HERE'S RONALD MCDONALD!!!
@@guyman3854 Bro my ptsd
@@guyman3854 I HAVE AN IDEA
@@guyman3854 LET'S ALL STOP AND GET LUNCH AT MCDONALDS
There will probably less creators, since I'm assuming that it's easier to make pixel art than 3d models.
I’m glad they’re taking their time. Really shows they care about the game
The animation and flow looks amazing! They’ve come a long way, I’m kinda worried about the ledge tho but hey lets see
This looks amazing and cant wait for it but I will really miss the pixel style of the original its just part of the first game's charm for me
same
the newer animation kinda feels slower without the pixel art
SAME
Please bring Ori back for this new artstyle. My baby needs more spotlight. Might actually get this if they do bring him back this time.
it was confirmed they aren't bringing back guest characters, at least for launch
@@ramensmoothie I'd imagine it would be hard to get Ori back even post launch due to licensing issues. I think that's the reason why the only premium skin Ori has is the champion skin and then I don't even know if he has one
Spoilers for Will of Wisps.
Ori is a tree now.
@@kagekaiser9270
I know! Its very sad. I wasn't ready for the ending of WotW.
@@ramensmoothie that’s fine honestly, just something that happens with fighting games
We're gonna need some more Indie reps!! Please let the knight from Hollow knight in:)
If there was a voting poll on which indie character can be in, as long as they are multiplatform such as being in playstation and Xbox or switch
my only hope for this game is that they add Sandbert and Guadua as official characters. At least Guadua, since she fits in with the rest of the cast in terms of design. Sandbert I could understand why they wouldn't add but they'd be gigachads if they did.
That song is a jam though
If they're going to do a sequel then it would be fair to add all the characters from the previous title including Shovel Knight and Ori. And this way they can add more fighters and special characters.
Nah. I want more characters as bringing old ones takes lots of resources and some old ones are barely played. Wouldn't it be cool to see more guests or see NPCs finally get playable roles instead of bringing back... Sandbert?
@@Freefork Mind you this is the sequel. There are really no "Old" characters to speak of, the game itself is new so it has time to build it's roster much like Smash or Street Fighter.
@@midnightcarnivalmember Only problem is that this is an Indie game. Smash and Street Fighter have much bigger budgets and still remove moves, traits, or characters from their roster on every entry. Every character that is barely played can be thought of as "old"(2016 old) and new characters can bring a ton of new interest into the game.
Lastly, just to be blunt, but the old fighters had like no brand recognition. Nobody knows who some of the underplayed characters are unless you mained them. Unlike guest fighters or popular NPCs that appear in other material. Some Dungeons of Aether characters would be far more interesting then... the same dude that nobody played again... but everyone pretends to care when they're gone.
@@Freefork On this I have to disagree, indie titles are what keep the video game industry alive, Iwata himself developed the first indie game and that led to a lasting legacy that opened the door to game developers like Capcom and others. You say that the characters have no brand recognition? They did the moment they were created.
@@midnightcarnivalmember That is a non-argument. The characters don't have brand recognition NOW. That was my argument. The fact any character can get recognition and build a legacy has nothing to do with my initial claim. Rivals can always come back in Rivals 3 or 4 and bring back forgettable fighters in hopes they catch on. As for now, we need to ensure that the brand stays sustainable as long as possible.
Otherwise, Rivals will die like many other titles such as Gex, PSASBR, or ...Bubsy by not doing everything it can to stay relevant. Rivals 2 is up against Multiversus, NASB, and SMASH BROS. They need to do little more to be profitable.
I actually liked that there was no ledge grab and no shields. Its the things that made this game different from smash that made me like it, not the similarities.
I'm fine with shields as it gives grabs a purpose here.
The ledge mechanics have me a bit disappointed though. If it's like Melee and Brawl's that will surely be disappointing.
@@Mr.Foxhat They confirmed in the QnA that hogging's gonna be it :(
@@WillM69 That is really unfortunate. Here's hoping Dan is just trolling people there.
@@Mr.Foxhat or you know how about just leave grabs and shielding out of the game.. this isnt fucking smash lmfaoo.. you guys are going to be really sad when aether2 flops on its face. DEAD on arrival and most will go back to aether 1
@@CartemAt very toxic but very true, rivals 1 is unique and charming, rivals 2 really is going in the opposite direction
Sylvanos and Clairen in HD can’t wait
Kragg and Forsburn HD? I hope the smoke effects look fantastic.
Nah they're gonna cut Sylvanos faster than you can say Jab Jab Petalwave
@@pondscum9363 pls no
@@pondscum9363 I hope so. I want new characters, dang it! No one wants "Rivals 1 with shields".
@@Freefork No one said they had to offer the Rivals 1 fighters in a blood sacrifice in order to have any new fighters
It's insane that this game is releasing next month. It doesn't feel like two years flew by.
They bring back the grabs and edge grabbing mecanics, something that the previous game didn't do. It makes me think they want to make it more like a different project rather than something to replace the first one, allowing everyone to be competitive in both games and enjoy differently.
Oooh. New art style. Camera seems to be fixed. Ok. Rivals of Aether is coming back bigger and better than ever.
I wonder if the workshop characters will be there as well: Hodan, Mollo, Olympia and Pomme.
Pomme's my main and I love how her musical attacks fit with the background music.
They said all base cast minus the guest characters aka Ori and Shovel Knight (most likely for licensing issues) will be at launch
@@mguymario I really hope it.
@@mguymarioSorry where did they say
@@mguymario well I would swap Ori with a ps4/5 port of Rivals 2
@@mguymario They didn't say at launch, they just said eventually
Can't wait for a Better modding support, it will be Epic
The mods for this are gonna be top tier. It’s not even 2023 yet and I want it to be 2024 already.
Please have the awesome polar bear in it again
Whelp, rest in peace Goku Vs Wall E Vs Ronald Vs furry Micheal Jackson
hype as hell! Im gonna play this 100%
I feel like rivals 1 will be the melee of his franchise once rivals 2 comes out. since the games are so different in gameplay style some people will definetly still be playing rivals 1
Idk, I feel like the sequel is going to eclipse the original by a crazy margin. Especially with it bringing in shield, ledges and grabs which will definitely bring over alot of smash players. This game seems like its on track to surpass the original by a considerable amount.
@Switchblade1013 And? LMFAO!!!
@Switchblade1013
LMAO, its not. But at least you tried lol
I hope most of the characters return.. I'm not expecting Ori or Shovel Knight but at least the base 12 and maybe the workshop DLC if they have the rights
im a pretty casual smash fan and this looks pretty fun. have to keep my eyes open for this one!
The FUCKING STORM EAGLE STAGE!!! The megaman tribute, love it
I love that they go to 3D, but I don't want them to leave the first game aside either, it has too much potential, it just lacks recognition
Plus Ranno is nerfed in Rivals 2 if you look closely
this is night and day compared to the first trailer a year ago, this new trailer looks awesome ! way more personality than the old one
Oh boy, I hope workshop creations are a feature
Workshop creations would be 100 times harder to do for the average guy now that it requires 3d modeling and animation
As someone who does MUGEN characters and probably gonna make some for ROA, making characters in 3D would be pretty much torture.
However in the best case scenario, someone makes some dedicated tools for making worship characters for ROA2, which could (again, in the best case scenario) make the process much smoother.
Probably having a "template character" with a wide arrange of "template animations". Time will tell...
@@MrAnsatsuken that's what i want in my platform fighter.
Example: for up strong you can pick different types of animations like an uppercut, kick flip, head smack etc.
Better make it a human skeleton
i was really hoping to see my boy Kragg
Well Kragg is the most necessary earth fighter ecen though his development isn't shown
Now imagine Ronald in 3D
I really hope the custom alt creator returns
Ledge play, grabbing and pummeling, and the animations all look sick.
This is fire can't wait to stream this.
This actually is giving me incentive/hype to keep playing Rivals 1. I just got the game two days ago, and this has got me even more excited to get good.
Are you good yet?
@@rj27basketball I still play, picked Hodan as a Main, and unfortunately I still cannot tell if I’m good
@@homeforhomies8415 same with me and my main is Zetterburn
I really hope shovel knight is still gonna be in game!
If the devs had to keep one character between Shovel Knight and Ori, i think Shovel Knight so Rivals 2 can be on Playstation
Im a bit sad with the 2024 release date but if ot means the games gonna be solid at release im more than happy to wait
Yo looks great. Animations actually look good too.
Most 3D smash clones look awful
As a non rivals of aether player, i can see that the first game is charming because of it's art design, thus making me people tryna pick it up and trying out the game mechanic. Yes this one might be better, but it's just not attractive enough for new players. I feel like ogs are the only ones who gon play this game
I hope there will be some kind of workshop just like in the first game, id understand if there wasnt as this game looks so different and obviously 3d but im still gonna wish it does
This is hella worth the wait
Bruh it's so far away
I think making the game in 3d will make it more dificult for the workshop community, but, let's wait and see.
cant wait to play as jerma in 3d
oh god the hype. Let's freaking go!
I'll be waiting as long as it takes to play this game. The first one is awesome.
Who KNOWS what kinds of characters people are going to make when this comes out.
WHERE IS MY WHALEY-DOG BOY
He is actually an Orca, but those are also whales.
@@kagekaiser9270 It was purely for comedic purposes my friend. And Orcinus Orca definitely falls under the Cetacea order, however it also falls under the suborder Delphinidae, making it the largest member of the dolphin family. This makes my previous "Whaley boy" comment even more ridiculous :)
Ashamed to say that the pixel art of the first game put me off a bit, but this new artstyle looks incredible. Definitely gonna give this a try
2024 is a brutal fucking wait dude.
Air Armada is such a legendary arrangement
huh...... they followed the barrier guard route eh? i hope the iterated on it because otherwise they're better off not using it at all and go back to the parry window thing in the first game
I want see maypul in this style
Si esto tiene la workshop, tranquilamente seria un Smash Killer y eso que me encanta smash
If this game has workshop all other smash clones even Multiversus wouldn’t be able to compete
As a fairly long-time FGC player, it's really refreshing to see Rivals in a new light. The first game always felt a bit clunky to me and I had a hard time getting into it - this really feels like a solid, cohesive extension of the universe. Cannot wait to try
trades the old pixel art for 3D? I prefere the pixel art but it looks polished so I am not going to complain. Trade old parry mechanic for shield and grabs? Faire enough. It still seems like a combo game, awesome. Overwall I am hyped, I don't think old rivals is going to be replaced because it has so much to it but the 2nd definitely seems worth a shot. I hope it gives more visibility to the game ^^
Yo ledge grabs too. I'm so glad dropping parrying and walljump recovery.
Melee's mechanics are great, but a lot of characters are just too good/scummy. If Dan for nacey actually delivers well on the mechanics, I'm full switching over from melee to rivals.
Parrying still a thing. But walljump recovering prat falls has been removed.
@@HyperFreak89 I kind of wish you could choose between pratfall wall jump cancels and ledges like Groove system in Street Fighter games.
Parrying still in the game
@@Freefork Well, you'd have to remove all the new mechanics. Cuz the point of ledges now is to not get heavily countered by shields when recovering. Imagine how free it would be for anyone fighting Clairen to block her upB and punish her. It has to be implemented. I dont mind the changes and resemblance to smash. I just want sick combos and a better looking game.
@@HyperFreak89 Just like in Street Fighter, don't pick certain Grooves on certain characters. Same way you don't pick Kragg and run to a stage that allows you to get camped easy. Different characters need different tools, and a groove system can help viability. I can't imagine Maypul's recovery being any good with just a ledge.
Even though it's a prank, can we take a moment to appreciate the quality of the music and the animation please
Nah, this is actually real. This has been something known about for a while. I know today is April Fools, but for once this is something legit
@@theschwami2693 nah, it's been a joke for a long time
@@DarkblooM_IO Rivals for like 4 years that make real announcements in april fools, that's the joke
everything they announce for Rivals on April Fools is real. that's the joke.
@@DarkblooM_IO gottem
Closest I've seen to Smash in terms of animation quality it just needs a tad more of impact in my opinion it needs Smash's camera shakes and a couple frames longer Hit stops.
Does not defeat the entire point of the first game? ledges, shields, grabs, seems a little odd
Unless its some advanced april fools joke
Dan Fornace actually publically stated that the exclusion of mechanics like ledges, shields and grabs back in Rivals 1 was a result of development constraints. After the last Rivals Direct Dan and the team did a Q&A in which they went a bit more in depth in regard to game design decisions. Dan stated that bringing back these mechanics results in more complexity and aligns with the goal of attracting as much people inside and outside of the Plattform-Fighter Community as possible.
Shovel Knight 3D Looks At this Rivals of aether 2 when?
In my opinion the pixil graphics made it unique and special among other fighting games
can't wait to see pepsi man back to pepsi the opponents!
Ok but will it have workshop support
Zetterburn looks WAY better in Rivals 2. His character sprite in Rivals 1 left so much to be desired. He looked way too small and soft and not at all like the huge muscular lion dude he is supposed to be.
I hope that la reina gets in.
This game looks like it’s going to be a good one please keep elliana in the game is all I ask lol elliana mains out there would agree maybe buff her for this game too even by a bit though with the new grab and ledge grabbing she could be use more I feel. Idk hard to say have to wait two years to find out if this will be true but I’ll still play her even if she is low tier.
Awesome
Take your time with the visuals, this already looks a lot better. It's just barely there.
As soon as someone mods Ronald into this it’s over
I think its now More harder to make custom characters, if even they get into rivals 2
new Pokemon looking good.
Such a godlike game
This is already Better then smash Bros
Am I the onlyone that wishes it had stated pixel art? This looks "good", but I don't think it looks "as good".
Oh man, this game looks beautiful, way better than NASB and Multiversus. Music is banging and the animations are amazing as well, pretty on par with Smash Ultimate. I’m glad the devs are taking their time with the game. I’m sure it’ll come out great.
MULTIVERSUS ISNT EVEN OUT YET
@@justaveraeg See, neither is this game, so it's actually fair to compare both.
"On par with smash ultimate" Rivals has been better than smash for a long time. All rivals 2 has to do is improve on it's predecessor.
@@hole1274 It really depends on your personal opinion with what exactly means to be better than Smash, but I personally do agree.

Man. Us pixel fans are really getting the short end Of The stick with these sequels recently. You're just remaking the game in 3D? We already have a bazillion 3d platform fighters.
I know rivals combat system is really tight and that's why people like it but the pixel art style was beautiful and unique in the genre. Rip. Oh well, I'm sure it will still be a fantastic game
Smash Flash 2 already exist and so does super smash bros crusade. Wouldn't see a reason for Rivals 2 to be pixel art if it didnt have to which clearly it didnt.
@@teddyrosekidd clearly Fuck off homie, I like pixel art. There's a million 3d platform fighters. Poorly balanced fan games don't really scratch the itch the way rivals does. The reason it would be pixel art is because they want it to be. Which they didn't, and that is upsetting to me. I'm not gonna make a petition to get the supreme court to change it. Simply sharing my opinion on a public forum.
