    She withheld food as punishment, didn’t let her oldest son have a room for almost a year, and blatantly terrorized her children LONG before Jodie came along. Kevin was there for all of that. Jodie is a monster but she didn’t influence Ruby; they just found a common bond out of hurting children.

He said that he agreed with them and that she was A-OK with her parenting technique. He essentially gave up when he walked out of the kids lives for 14 months, if that was so easy for him to do, I don’t see why he should get them back now.

      Jody's been around way longer than you think. Sending Chad to wilderness camp was Jody's idea. Taking his bedroom away was too. Ruby even used that as an excuse for the backlash at the time, saying she wasn't wrong for following a professional therapist's advice. Chad even mentions Jody as his therapist by name once in a video. That video about Eve forgetting her lunch, Ruby is using Jody's lingo too. Jody's been around just as long as Ruby's channel almost, but her influence grew with time. Ruby's still guilty, though.

They are both demented, and they both should rot in prision.

    • @MadeOfQuestions
      @MadeOfQuestions 10 месяцев назад +20

      Jodi was actually recommended to Ruby by her brother and his wife. She didn't shop around... and Jodi actually moved into the Franke home for over a year. If anyone was Jodi's prey, it was Ruby. Ruby was perfect for Jodi. Jodi wanted Ruby's platform of millions of viewers, with her morman background and willingness to go along with the purity culture and abuse it was just a perfect storm. Jodi had diagnosed psychopathic tendencies and narcissistic personality, according to Jessi. When you combine those disorders with a psych degree, 0 accountability, and no soul, you're bound to get some terribly manipulating behavior. Ruby is 100% responsible for what she did and allowed to happen to her kids. Jodi is 100% responsible for everything she's done as a licensed mental health therapist over the decades. I just don't think Ruby was looking for someone to validate her abuse. I'm pretty sure Jodi was looking to use Ruby's platform tho

    • @lactofermentation
      @lactofermentation 10 месяцев назад +19

      IMO, it doesn't matter how much influence Jodi had: Ruby duct taped her her younger children's limbs, locked them in a room, then starved and dehydrated them.
      There's something wrong with anyone who thinks that's anything less than unforgivable.

    • @krisl6537
      @krisl6537 10 месяцев назад +12

      @@MadeOfQuestions the only thing I'd disagree on is that Ruby was Jodi's prey. You see, that feeds into the mindset that Ruby was manipulated by Jodi and also places her in a victim's position. Ruby is NOT a victim, she was starving, abusing, and isolating her children way before Jodi came into the picture. If anything, they were a perfect storm because they both found a completely like-minded person, they fed off each other.

    • @belinus7180
      @belinus7180 10 месяцев назад +8

      It's a legal trick to try and show that Ruby lacked "mens rea" or "guilty mind". In this case, her defense is essentially "I was just following orders." Problem is there just some things, like depriving your children of food/water, that are patently wrong. Especially since Ruby could have easily verified Jodi was giving her sound strategies with a simple call to the family doctor's PA.

If you want your children to be well-behaved, you can achieve that while treating your children with respect; withholding food, adequate shelter, threatening violence, etc. isn’t being strict, it’s just straight up abuse.

      It's why the hardline fundagelical parenting philosophy espoused by the likes of Mike and Debi Pearl and James Dobson is inherently abusive, regressive, and harmful, even when it's phrased in sweet, civilized-sounding language and backed up with Bible verses. A person who thinks that their child is an innately wicked being who must be brought to heel or else they will someday burn for eternity in Hell is not going to treat their child with the humanity, consideration, compassion, and tenderness they need and deserve.

      Whats crazy is that “strict parenting” never works. Children always end up more sneaky abd secretive. Most children never feel comfortable talking to their parents and end up being the most wild adults be because their parents restricted them too much. Most of those kids lack social skills, due to the lack of their parents not letting them have the will to make their own decisions.

    If we are to believe that Kevin had no idea what was happening to his children than that’s a problem! Because any decent parent would make it their business to know! You not being involved and making sure that your kids are safe, healthy and happy makes you a part of the problem! Had you done your due diligence as a father maybe you could have stepped in and stopped/prevented a lot of this. He gets no free pass. Not knowing isn’t acceptable!

    Not a trauma therapist, but have been through lots of trauma therapy. Unfortunately, young or not, those kids will be affected for life whether or not they remember all the details of what they went through. These kinds of experiences rewire your brain, change the way it functions, impacts the nervous system and infiltrates your physical and mental responses on a core level. You’re so right when you say the body keeps score! My 30 yr old daughter in law is still dealing with all the damage that comes along with a selfish, emotionally abusive, alcoholic parent and the other is completely checked out & hides from it all. There are times where I tell her she needs to create boundaries or nothing will ever change, but I honestly don’t think she is there yet because of the endless guilt pushed on her. I also don’t want to push too hard and cause her even more anxiety. As a parent, all I have ever wanted was to raise my kids to be confident & happy so they could grow into a healthy adult. I truly don’t understand how a parents can do this to their own flesh & blood.

      Sadly and respectfully I disagree that she never wanted to have kids. It is an incredibly unfortunate reality that many people become parents because they see it as a way to enforce their complete and utter will over another person and that power trip makes them feel good and in control. It’s absolutely messed up, but I wholeheartedly believe that you don’t reach the levels of villainy that this woman reached unless you are severely messed up morally.

It seemed like she wanted to do easy parenting by forcing her children to do their own, and getting punished of they didn't do it or did it wrong

      It's very probable she didn't even realize she didn't want kids due to religious indoctrination until later, if ever.
      I grew up in a conservative Mormon household. I met my ex-husband at an LDS college at 19, married at 20. Dropped out of college for my husband's job offer. Had my first kid at 23 after 2 years of infertility, and my second baby at 25.
      I didn't even realize I was bisexual until 27, that's how indoctrinated I was into the ways the way The Church wanted me to live.
      I left The Church around the same time, for a wide variety of reasons. My kids did not grow up indoctrinated. But it will last with me for my life.
      Back to Ruby, I don't know if she never wanted to be a mom, or if she wishes she had waited to have them, and have fewer. I wish I had finished a bachelor's or higher in education and worked a bit before having my two kids.
      But, I had to work my way out of my religion to even consider that. And by then it was too late.

    I know you say hopefully her Littles will not have this be a formative memory for them, but as a single father of an 8 year old with diagnosed PTSD from visitation with her biological paternal parent, it will. My baby girl suffered atrocities far less than the Frankie kids, thankfully, but sometimes things like being alone in a room, a raised voice, the sound of running water, or the smell of vinegar is enough to make us call the local "behavioral health" (their term for mental health) crisis line to get her an emergency appointment. This kind of thing WILL follow them all their lives, unfortunately. Hopefully, the extent of the trauma doesn't remain the same strength in them forever, but I can assure you they'll never forget.

    • @nypupu

      I feel like kids really do have much harder time dealing with trauma since their brains are not fully developed and they lack the tools to properly process the situation. I know it myself, I still feel tons of anxiety when I hear someone stomping or cleaning up the dishes a little too loud, and I completely freeze and involuntarily stop breathing when I feel like I am in trouble (as an adult, I obviously do not get into “trouble”…). It is so so hard to be pulled back into the past in these instances so I am heartbroken for everyone who experiences something similar. What's scary about this and is often left out is the religious aspect. How Jodi used their beliefs and magnified them for her use in therapy. How if the kids are still in the religion will be "gently" coaxed to forgive Ruby over time. The intertwining of her therapy and the religious beliefs made this more insidious for those children. I think for even some of the adults.

Ruby is just as bad if not worse because it was her own kids, and reading her journal She sounds mentally insane. She gets off to pain , and takes her anger out on them. She wrote written physical proof that SHE threatened and has hurt her kids. They just used their relationship as a crutch, to do wrong. These people are far from Godly. They now made their kids probably always have resentment to having a actual LOVING relationship with God. because all they know is what they were shown.

      And to be further clear, I worked in cps, and a child not having a room isn’t something a child is taken away for, or the parents to be shamed for. It’s something that would result in hunting down a cheap bed and hopefully a donated decent mattress 😅 BUT the intentional removal of access to a bed is literal and by no means hyperbolic, abuse.

    Ruby was just given a 15 year sentence for each charge to be served consecutively today. So that’s a total of 60 YEARS. Nothing about probation or parole. She has 30 days (until March 22 calendar wise) to change her mind. So lets see if Rube *means* what she’s said about “deserving her sentence” and “just wanting to accept her punishment”.

    Ruby doesn’t feel guilty for what she’s done, she’s just upset that she got caught and doesn’t like jail. She’s not reaching out to her family for healing she’s reaching out to make them think she’s healed or healing so that maybe they will drop all this and she won’t be sent to prison. She deserves prison and so much more for what she did to her kids and then having the audacity to tell other people how to parent their kids. I hope she gets everything she deserves.

      No matter what she says to her family, there is zero chance it will be dropped. The state charged her and she pled guilty to four charges with the knowledge that they will run one after the other. The absolute minimum time she will do is about 3 years and 8 months. The most she will get is 30 years because of Utah’s sentencing guidelines. But her family does not have the ability or power to do anything about the charges or her doing jail time. She’s already agreed to and the parole department will decide exactly how long she’s going to have to servd

    As a survivor of CA that was ongoing (0-17 years)... the age of the kids matters only in that, during the formative years, of you fail to bond with your children in certain ways, they will never be able to fill the hole that is left.
    C-PTSD goes into a lot of it. Even the kids that witnessed it will be severely effected for the rest of their lives. Attachment disorders will be an issue, as well as trust issues, depression, anxiety, nightmares, being in a constant state of alert...etc.
    On top of that, they will have difficulty trusting any adult or therapist, which will make therapy incredibly difficult.
    I wish them being young was some sort of boon, but it's worse. So so much worse. Those poor kids. (I'm speaking from experience, so take it as you will)

    As an Exmormon and victim of parental abuse, I worry that the kids won't be able to heal in their current environment. The Mormon culture has a huge emphasis on family, to the point that you're expected to endure abuse to keep the family together. I was told (AS A CHILD) that I had to forgive my abusers (my parents), or I WOULD BE JUST AS BAD AS THEY WERE.
    There's literally a book written by a previous prophet called "The Miracle of Forgiveness," which instructs abuse victims to consider "their role in the abuse" and repent for it. These kids will be pressured by family and their church to forgive their mother before they are ready (if they are EVER ready), and be told that God condemns them for not doing so, that they are being not Christlike by choosing not to forgive, and that they must repent from their (JUSTIFIABLE) anger toward an authority figure who should've protected them. I don't think they'll be able to process their grief, pain, and anger in a healthy way until they're out of the church.

    I was a probation officer for the state of Florida. I wrote several PSIs (pre-sentence investigations), and they are EXTREMELY thorough. They will be looking through Ruby's vlogs and anything else they can find online. She's screwed.
    Well, let me rephrase.
    She's screwed IF the judge takes their recommendation. They took mine only about 15% of the time, so it all depends on the judge in the end.

    • @the-first-of-her-name
      @the-first-of-her-name 10 месяцев назад +8

      @@ReviewsAndMore9 you're telling me. after spending weeks on PSIs, there's nothing more infuriating
      edit: to add more insight, this rule also applied to people i was supervising. if they violated their probation and i sent the report to the court with my recommendation, the judge always had the final say.
      i've recommended my offenders go back to prison, only to face them in my office the next day. it's a bit unsettling when the system doesn't listen to the officers they hire. it's why i left the position.
      probation officers have to have degrees because of all the reports they write, we know our offenders the best because we work with them personally and already have a thorough understanding of how they operate, so it's not like we're idiots. we train for months before even stepping foot in the office.
      HOWEVER, a judge will look at things through their own lens. sometimes you get a good judge who knows how to be objective and sometimes you don't. like the lawyer in swoop's video points out, ruby is a first time offender. as heinous as her crime is, she's not a threat to the community as a whole (in a violent way) and it's unlikely she'll do much time. the prisons are overcrowded and ruby franke is not a dangerous felony lifer. as much as i wish she'd go away for 20 years, this probably won't go much differently than how the judge handled similar charges in the past. my prediction is... to be bleak, maybe 5 years.
      it sucks, but so does our system.

      Agreed.
      Ruby Franke would need to confront some pretty painful and ugly stuff within herself and her personal history in order to truly and genuinely appreciate the gravity and meaning of her own actions and the profound harm she's caused. As it stands, I worry that at worst, she merely feels shame and regret that she was caught, and at best, she thinks that the problem was with the tactics she employed with her kids, and not with the toxic emotions, beliefs, motives, and philosophy that informed those tactics.
      Ruby Franke *might* theoretically be capable of this necessary reflection and change---but, whether she'll ever actually seize that latent potential is another story, and she'd need to start by not just trying to pass the buck o' blame to Jodi Hildebrandt. My gut read of Jodi Hildebrandt is that she's characterologically incapable of genuine compassion, self-reflection, and remorse, and that she'll go to her grave seething about everyone else's "distortions."

    13:51 - I'm a linguistics major, a 17 year veteran language teacher, and fluency examiner for Cambridge University. *ALL* words re "made up" that is the point, we apply an agreed collection of phonemes to define items/people/places in order to communicatee and they are. all. made. up.
    It's why we have different languages. Saying something is a "made up word" is correct but that's literally the point o words and doesn't devalue them in any way at all, language is constantly evolving.
    Also, thank you Swoop for this Doc. I have been waiting (not so) patiently for weeks for this!!! I'm so glad she is getting rea repercussions for her abuse and it just proves that CCs like yourself are so important because you shine a light on cases that MSM don't have a clue about until it's too late.

    Sadly, being very young when enduring abuse doesn't allow you to bounce back quicker. In fact, it's the opposite: your trauma will be buried deeper in your mind, and therefore will be way harder to overcome. Ask me how i know... (Love your docs, btw)

      I was thinking the same thing...Their brains developed in the trauma. I just hope that all the money their exploitation brought in can be used to provide them with the intensive and lifelong treatment they probably will need.

      Yeah…there are interesting studies on the shit that’s common in kids that were abused or went through something traumatic. I have nightmares and flashbacks to the things that happened decades ago…that I finally asked parents about recently and got told that “if” a particular bad memory happened (the one I have the most nightmares about), I “must have done something to deserve it”. I’ve definitely had a backslide in my health since then. 😞

    So glad she and Jodi are finally having to take accountability (not sure if that's the right word) and justice is being served 🙌🏽 the whole "distortion" idea (and the rest of those beliefs) are unhinged and I hope they won't be able to hurt anyone anymore (especially her children)!! Thank you for following up on this case 💜

    I’m very suspicious of the divorce. I think it’s a way to protect assets and their best bet at restoring the family once Ruby is released. Kevin’s best chance at getting custody is to appear to have separated himself from Ruby. And if Kevin gets all or most of the assets in the divorce they’re protected from restitution and civil litigation that could be filed against Ruby. But I’ve been called cynical more than once. So I guess we’ll have to wait and see

    Hey Swoop. I just wanted to say thanks for the deep dive. I know it might seem odd to some to spend so much time on negativity, but I am a FIRM believer that we should absolutely shine a spot light on darkness. I am a mom, I have worked with abused women and kids in different roles for about 10 ten years. I can't read the affidavits anymore. So thank you, from someone who understands what looking at darkness feels like. We need more people like you and your team. Love from Canada

    Yay! A new year and a new Swoop video! I was really surprised when Ruby and Jodi took plea deals. I’m gonna venture they did this because they didn’t want more horrific details to emerge during a trial. Also, it seems like Ruby and Jodi being separated in jail caused the spell to break between them. I’m still of the mind that they were in a brainwashy romantic relationship. I’m not saying that to be scandalous. Just going by the videos where Ruby was gazing adoringly at Jodi.
    And that ex husband! That dude needs to be in prison too! We all know he abused those kids too.

      Their sentencings are scheduled half an hour apart, if I remember correctly. (Both February 20, Ruby at 10:00 AM, Jodi at 10:30)
      If I do remember correctly, I'm hoping they don't get to see each other.

      I think they shortened the jail time by pleading guilty, they are just serving for some charges, not all of them. If they were going to trial they would probably get like 15 years each. They are not feeling guilty, they just did what was best for them (not for the children, as that clown of ruby said just to appear as a victim)
