  • Here is Ellen Greene and Lee Wilkof's performance of "Somewhere That's Green" and "Suddenly, Seymour" on the May 27, 1983 episode of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. At the time, the two were appearing in the production's run at the Westwood Playhouse (now the Geffen Playhouse) in Los Angeles. Howard Ashman supplied the lyrics and directed the production, and Alan Menken supplied the music.
Also featured are (I believe) Marion Ramsey as Crystal, Louise Robinson as Ronnette, and B.J. Jefferson as Chiffon.
In a 2005 feature for Playbill, Ellen Greene said of Carson and her appearance, "Everyone tuned in for [Carson's] monologues because he was political, he was smart, he was sexy, and he had style. He was really bright and really powerful. There's nothing more of a turn-on than a man who is bright, and he was so bright. He was so sexy, and he had such a dear heart. And he loved talent. He loved pure talent, and that's why people were loyal to him. And, he also demanded it. You never could do his show and anybody else's, and if you did, chances are you wouldn't come back or you wouldn't get on right away. He demanded loyalty, and he got it because a shot on 'The Johnny Carson Show' changed everything . . . [One of his employees spotted me in the West Coast production of Little Shop of Horrors], and I came on as Audrey and did 'Somewhere That's Green.' Everybody who worked for Johnny were ultimate professionals. They knew what they were doing: the sound, the lights, the shots. It was run like a fine instrument. They were so organized. They wanted me to sing "Green," and they shot "Green" so beautifully. I don't usually watch my own stuff, but that was gorgeous. . . It was amazing to work with [Carson] because you never knew which of the questions [from the pre-interview] he was going to ask. It used to bother my agents [how I acted on the show]. They said, 'Ellen, you're so smart, why are you only acting ditzy?' [Laughs.] They wanted that side of me - they liked [women] who were kind of ditzy and funny and sexy. It was also exciting when they were pleased. When you landed a set-up for Johnny, you could tell. I got so much attention from that spot and from subsequent ones. I also want to give him one more [credit]. Because of the great camera work on the show and the lighting and the sound, I think that rendition of "Green" - me in my Audrey dress and my wig - I think that really helped convince Howard [Ashman], who championed me for the [Little Shop of Horrors] film, that I could take [Audrey] one step further and make it cinematic."

Wow!! This is an amazing clip. I've loved the movie ever since I saw it. Seeing Ellen Greene perform that live on stage must have been unforgettable.

That's a tough act. I can only imagine how difficult it is to sing as Ellen Green did. A forced lisp, controlled belting, strategic dynamics, with emotions while hitting the right notes. If that's easy, you're crazy. She's not amazing. She's incredible.

To me, personally, I will always think Ellen Greene's performance in this show was one of the most iconic performances ever.

Thank you for posting this! There are rumors they're trying to get her back to play Audrey again for the Off-Broadway production that's still running in NYC, and I really hope it comes to fruition. She's an absolute icon, and it would be amazing to see her again.

Are you serious? That’s would be incredible 🤩 It’s been a while since she’s been in the public eye probably cause she’s slowly been retiring but if she ended her career off with her playing Audrey one last time it would be so amazing

I do believe...that...Ellen Green is 73 years old now....that might change the dynamics of the relationship? But wow!

Not to rain on the parade, but I am highly skeptical about this rumor. It was peddled by SweatyOracle who said the production would close in January 2025….tickets are onsale into 2026. Further, after the Encores production she tried to develop a revival that incorporated elements from the movie, but that was squashed by the Howard Ashman estate, who was in negotiations with a producer. So I highly doubt Ms. Greene would have any interest in involvement with the current production.m

@@williammclean5897 She tried to start a revival and they shut her down?? That’s not cool 😭 Yeah I can see why she wouldn’t want to be in the 2019 revival because of that but one can dream 😮‍💨

@greenesmyfavcolor9742 In short, it was a revival with a reworked "darker" script by Frank Oz and Ellen, that would have blended aspects of the original musical and the 1986 film. By the time they approached Howard's estate, there were no producers attached to the idea while the estate was already in negotiations with "a major producer" for a major revival (likely the one currently running.) They're also incredibly protective of Howard's work given how protective and opinionated Howard was himself, so it's also possible they weren't on-board with a reworked/rewritten script.

Perfect from Ellen! Such emotion, there are literal tears running down her face. Going to see LSOH in December, think I’m going to be disappointed when Audrey isn’t her 😅
