    I JUST saw this show and it is definitely a dark jewel, but nevertheless a jewel. The score is Sondheim all the way and the show was pretty amazing. I loved it and no, it's not for everyone. The second act, simply called "The Room" is very dark, but very well done. The acting all the way is superb, the tech amazing and Mr. S's score is just as wonderful, intriguing and fascinating as ever. If you are a Sondheim fan, this is for you. It's experimental on some levels and makes many statements about consumerism, marriage (duh!), social class and the end of the world politics. It is cleverly staged. All the performances are first rate--standouts are Denis O'Hare, Bobby Cannavale , Steven Pasquale and Tracie Bennett. But that's like saying that here are some diamonds in a stack of ... well... diamonds. The set is very flexible in the first act "The Road" and then becomes rich and detailed in "The Room". Look. It's Sondheim's last musical. If you are a "sondamite" then go see it if you can. It was worth the price of my $350 ticket. My honest review.

    The actors were absolutely marvelous ! I wish I could say the same thing for the limited music by my music God , Stephen Sondheim that walked, started and stop through this ridiculous story! Came home with not one ear worm of a melody that I was longing to discover and want to play on the piano! Rest in peace my God, not a day goes bye, that your not someway a part of my life!

    Hello. Thanks for the video. Question: Does the second act have songs?

    • @brigidnyc
      @brigidnyc  11 месяцев назад +3

      Hi-Act 2 does begin with some singing. Thereafter it’s more like a straight play with underscoring. The orchestra is truly fantastic and the sound in this venue is excellent to hear every wonderful note.

      Apparently, from what I read, the 2nd act was based on The Exterminating Angel, and Sondheim apparently had some difficulty with musicalizing the second half, so he just gave up on the songs altogether, which explains why there is not as many songs in act 2 as there is in act 1.

      @@jasonlemoine2074Actually it was just the first preview; it doesn’t open until (I think) October 22. So we will have to wait till then for reviews - I am particularly curious since I’m seeing it on October 31.

      @@susanrgYeah I know that, I Didn't use the proper terminology. Should have said premiered. I meant reviews from like people on twitter who've seen it not official publications.

      @@brigidnyc I totally agree. On his deadbed, almost, he succeeded in turning the musical theatre around for a fourth time.

    not holding my breath...this show has been pummeled to death now for well over a decade..I haven't heard anything from Sondheim since Passion that was even remotely on the same level as his glory years...but as he has now been deified nobody will want to admitt to anything but a masterpiece and free flowing standing ovations after every ditty..if indeed you can call them songs....I'm sure he struggled with these exaggerated expectations

      Since you have already made your mind up about the show, and it doesn't sound like it's favorable, then I have a suggestion: Don't pay for the tickets and stay home.
      There! Problem solved.
      I mean, why are you even bothering saying anything about the show with an attitude like that?
      Of course he's not the same as he was when he was writing Company and A Little Night Music, but my God! Give it a chance!

    • @josephlavine1149
      @josephlavine1149 10 месяцев назад +2

      point taken but would you agree that free flowing standing ovations are now almost guaranteed for ANY musical in nyc?

    • @nondescript2892
      @nondescript2892 10 месяцев назад +2

      @@josephlavine1149indeed..and as you are well aware Sondheim himself pointed out that this was a real problem for any show now as nobody paying these prices wanted to admitt to themselves that they had just witnessed something not worthy of an ovation...hence they rise from their expensive seats and clap themselves into the conviction they have just seen something VERY special...

      @@nondescript2892I just saw this for $25 and it was the best piece of theater I’ve seen in a long while. One of my favorite Sondheim shows, even. Sorry you don’t wanna see it, like I really am sorry because you’re missing out.
