If your device does not support 4K playback, tap GEAR ICON (or 3 dots) > QUALITY > 'HIGHER PICTURE QUALITY' (2) www.nytimes.com/2023/03/22/theater/aaron-sorkin-camelot-broadway.html Great backstory published March 22nd 2023 with NY Times and Aaron Sorkin describing his rewritten book for this musical, Camelot. While the book is revised, the most beloved elements of the story are intact. On April 13, this new version of “Camelot” is scheduled to open on Broadway. The Production has a 27-person cast and a 30-piece orchestra. It’s understandable that the set design and costumes cannot be fully appreciated from the curtain call video. However having attended the 1st Preview, one of the main reasons I will be returning to Camelot Broadway, after its Opening, is for the breathtaking moments with the set design - stunning, often unexpected and gorgeous! (Michael Yeargan- sets). The Lighting Design- a true “WOW” (Lap Chi Chu Lighting). And the fight scenes the best I’ve seen (B.H. Barry Fight Direction).

      Why are there so many black performers in this play? This is a play that takes place in 6th century Europe. There would not be black people, and if there were, they definitely would not be part of the Royal Court in Europe. This is completely historically inaccurate and cultural appropriation. This looks like it's another example of the woke far left pushing their blackwashing agenda. It seems like blackwashing is becoming a serious problem these days in film, television, and theater. As a white European, I find this kind of rewriting of history very offensive.

They’re very detailed and the vocalists are beautiful, their harmonies and belts were great! I mean, c’mon! ITS PHILLIPA SOO and JORDAN DONICA!! The way it was staged, the scene changes would completely change the stage. And Camelot of course wouldn’t come out like the original. It’s back on Broadway after so long, and you can stage and design show differently and it could still work!! The beauty of Broadway!

It was lush in terms of scenery, costumes, and of course their voices.The film version released in 1967, starred Richard Harris as Arthur, Vanessa Redgrave as Guenevere, Franco Nero as Lancelot and David Hemmings as Mordred and this too was just as lush.While I understand this is 2023 and the budget constraints are a main factor to offer seats at the Vivian Beaumont for up to $400 each which includes up to a $100 "fee" is just vulgar. RIGHT SIDE LOGE Row A Seat 501, 502. As general information for anyone selecting a Loge Seat: The perspective is fantastic as there is appreciation for full view of back wall projections. The Loge has 5 sections, spread out like a fan. LEFT SIDE LOGE (seats 101-116), CENTER LEFT LOGE (seats 201-215), CENTER LOGE (seats 301-317), CENTER RIGHT LOGE (seats 401-415) and RIGHT SIDE LOGE (seats 501-516). If possible, avoid LEFT SIDE LOGE 103-116 as you will be too far offset from midline of theater to see FULL back wall projections. Similarly, if possible avoid RIGHT SIDE LOGE seats 503-516 as you will be too far offset from midline of theater to see FULL back wall projections. Row A for Loge in any of the 5 sections is thrilling, and you simultaneously have view of the orchestra (the exposed areas of orchestra as most of it is under the stage), however leg room in Row A is a little tight. If you don’t mind, go for Row A! For all attending, wherever you sit, stay for the Exit Music and gorgeous sunset projection on back wall (missed by most people as they leave theater immediately after bows, either they are unaware of additional experience to enjoy or they need to run out to catch a train). Based on this video, the dreary production and costume design are deal breakers for me on this revival. @@fritzmasten7675 Incorrect. This is from the FIRST preview. Things keep changing during previews -- blocking, dialogue, etc., including sets and costumes. I saw a preview (not the first) of Spamalot and several of the drops weren't finished being painted. If this was already finished and the show was fixed in stone, it would be called Opening Night. And again, the last scene is a battlefield and the lighting is going to be much darker and moody. There's probably fog. So, in that lighting, this set would probably look pretty good. But you're not going to do the curtain call in that lighting.

      You've clearly never seen a show at the Vivian Beaumont directed by Bartlett Sher before. It's by far the largest stage house on Broadway, and they hide tons of set pieces in crazy spaces. I will never forget seeing the 15 foot tall tanks overcome barbed wire in War Horse, the gigantic sand dunes in South Pacific, the Piazza morphing before our eyes in Light in the Piazza, or the ship porting in a harbor in the opening of The King and I. I am certain this show is just as imaginative and impressive. Don't judge a show by its curtain call, especially at its first preview performance.

    • @ehuff99
      @ehuff99 Год назад +4

      @@jochenstossberg5427 Okay, I’m wrong that you’ve never seen a show in that space before. Sorry about that. Have you ever been an actor working in a space like that? I won’t guess this time.
      9/10, as an actor you are in a typical proscenium theater. You look like a picture frame on stage, and being in that set up feels like you are so separated from the audience. They are watching you, and finding a true connection is so hard.
      The Beaumont is one of my favorite spaces in the states. The massive thrust puts you right in the middle of where a normal theater’s Orchestra seating would be. The rest of the seating is then tiered around you with very little distance between you and the furthest away seats (compared to other comparable sized theaters).
      This also opens the gates for really innovative set design that takes advantage of different viewing angles that most Broadway theaters can’t even begin to offer.
      I don’t have a strong opinion about this particular Camelot revival yet, I have not seen it. But given the opportunities of the space and the credentials of the team, I am not going to write the whole thing off because of one short video of curtain call on their first preview. I think that is short sided and pretentious.

      Jochen, I forgot to mention that, in the show, the last scene takes place on a battlefield. This is the lighting for the curtain call. I'm sure the lighting for the battlefield scene is much more moody and dark (and probably has haze or fog). No one ever leaves the lights the same for curtain calls as they do their last scene (especially if it's as emotive as Camelot's). And, again, the sets probably aren't finished since this is from the first preview. They never are.

Wakanda and Mulan were told specifically for peoples whose experiences are underrepresented in media and entertainment. There have been lots of musicals and films with all white casts. Camelot also premiered on Broadway in 1960 -- before inrerracial marriage (I'm guessing you're also not a fan of that, either) I also have to tell you that Actor's Equity Association and the Broadway producers have been doing "non-traditional casting" since the 1990s. This is not the first time that people of color have been cast in roles originally played by a white person. And, guess what: the world didn't end. Many of the performances were better than the original. Finally, I would say to you that, since the race thing upsets you so much: don't go see the show. But that would be your loss. Not mine. Not the show's.

    This is what happened with this beautiful classic? It's so freaking dreary and no color at all. This is a waste of time and money. Of course it appeals to people who don't know music Richard Burton and Julie Andrews will forever be Queen and King of Camelot No one else has ever.

      Burton is dead, and Andrews can't sing this now. So, those people were wonderful last night. Are you judging the show because of bows? How about going to the theater to see the shoe, and then, come here and make your comments.
