Even though I think Art Pop is Gaga’s best work, Joanne was a needed album in her discography. People still called the Joanne era a flop yet it invigorated her career and gave her an additional demographic to her fan base. A Star is Born I believe was the biggest record for a female artist in 2018 overall if I’m not mistaken.

The thing ppl misunderstand about Gaga (and also about other pop artists) is that she is a person and her personality is multidimentional just as anyone else can be. Gaga didn't change her image and music, she just showed another side of her. Joanne's simplicity and vunerability doesn't mean that all her previous work were superficial or inauthentic, her music always had a meaning and art behind it, especially Born This Way. I mean, it's not that she also absolutely hates her work in ARTPOP either, the thing is that the era was associated with a dark moment in her life and with some decisions she deeply regrets, but still, that album was also good and artistic.

Bellerz G I agree, she was showing a different side of herself, she's always had meaning behind her music, people still see her as Ally, when she's not Ally. Lady Gaga is the face, but Stephanie is the person beneath the surface, attempting to peek out and break free of this crazy pop superstar imafe, and it was successful, the people have started accepting Stephanie for who she is! She's an amzing iconic woman, and is trying to be true to herself.

I feel like Joanne and Cheek to Cheek were very important and necessary to Gaga's career. Without them, the SuperBowl and ASIB wouldn't have happened, nor would she have the respect she gained from the industry. With this authentic Gaga, I wonder what she'll do next. Will she return to her roots and make a crazy pop era? Cause I wonder how a post-Joanne Gaga would approach such a concept.

I feel like the general public finally realizes how amazing Lady Gaga is and she has shown how versatile she can be as a performer. The public got regain in an interest in her even further after ASIB. After, people probably go back and reminisces about Gaga's earlier work and would like her to go back to that genre. I'm for sure certain she'll come back even stronger the next decade with a very critically acclaimed album. And she's definitely going to venture on into acting further down the line!

That's something very significant and relevant to notify because lavish, eccentric and outrageous costumes kind of sometimes showcase how insecure some artists can be when it comes to their natural artistic gifts. There's nothing wrong with entertaining shows and stuff but it's always better when art helps you have your emotions connected to those of the artist. It's much more intimate and therapeutic.

The way she picked herself from the ground and re-branded herself after ARTPOP to this day is literally one of the best comeback stories from the music industry. With every era she showed what an amazing artist she truly is and Joanne really did contribute a lot and got more people behind her. She's also an amazing person aswell. When Gaga reached peak saturation during ARTPOP the public were sick of the messy era and all gimmicks and bullshit
C2C and Joanne reinvented her as a real vocalist and it opened her up to huge opportunities like the Oscars. C2C Gaga was being invited to tribute to Julie Andrews, ARTPOP Gaga wasn’t. Also, belting those

Lady Gaga is one in a generation artist that brings so much depth and complexities to her art that takes time to understand her. Even though ARTPOP may be my least favorite album of Gaga's (no album of hers I hate I love them all) I feel that ARTPOP never was given a chance to blossom like it should. Gaga has a beautiful way of reworking her material to provide different sides to her songs. For example, she can do a stripped down version of the Edge of Glory, Judas, Poker Face, etc.. and the songs take a whole new meaning. I felt that ARTPOP didn't have that. I felt that ARTPOP came in with the intention of providing flavor to the music scene but was really distracted by chart performance. If I would have chosen the singles I would do:
    1. Applause (It was a perfect lead single. The Video was amazing)
    2. Venus (It was her first record where she did the producing)
    3. Do What U Want (This song is everything. I know the R. Kelly would cause a controversy but focusing on the remix with Christina Aguilera would completely elevate the song. When she performed it in the AMAs at the end she did a stripped down performance and releasing it like that would become a bigger hit but also a personal one a shot at the media)
    4. Gypsy (this song and a stripped down version would build off Do What U Want and have a 2013/14 version of Edge of Glory)
    5. Sexxx Dreams
When Joanne era came in I fell in love. What drew me in was the lead single Perfect Illusion. She performed it as a stripped down version and it was so heartbreaking. Joanne was a very personal record with so much depth and I wish it would have been explored more. Singles I would have chosen:
    1. Perfect Illusion/Acoustic
    2. Diamond Heart
    3. Million Reasons
    4. Hey Girl (this didn't need to be a hit it just needed to be exposed more)
    5. Joanne
Joanne was a shift to a balanced gaga/stefani record.
As for a star is born. I love that Shallow got all the recognition but I felt that the whole experience would be bigger if Heal Me, Always remember Us This Way, and Why did you do that? were released as a follow up to Shallow in the level that shallow was pushed.

I always disliked the false dichotomy that people sometimes project onto eccentric artists like Gaga: the "real" (i.e. stripped-down) vs. the "unreal" (i.e. surrealist theatricality). I think Gaga's earlier eras were authentic and fully representative of where she was during those periods of her life (even when adapting to the expectations of the commercial pop industry). I strongly believe that the fantasies we gravitate to and the stories we conjure can be just as revealing of our true nature as the cold hard facts of our everyday reality and Gaga's musical evolution is no different. With each album leading up to Joanne, Gaga was peeling back the layers of her enigmatic self through an abstract, psychedelic pop lens. I do agree that the frankness, sincerity, and autobiographical nature of Joanne allowed Gaga to showcase a different side of her artistry which in turn helped reshape the perception the general public may have had of her up until that point. However, I think it's important to acknowledge the instrumentality of Gaga's previous records in facilitating the effectiveness of Joanne. The contrast in aesthetic, songwriting style, and musical direction may not have been regarded as notable had she adopted this approach from the get go, but you eloquently discussed this in your video. Overall, I love Joanne. It's a beautiful, heartfelt body of work that illustrates Gaga's versatility as a musician, as well as her emotional complexity as a young woman. As a longtime fan, I was aware of this nuance and authenticity from the beginning, so it's sometimes frustrating to me that it took so long for the rest of the world to catch up. Excellent video, thank you for your work! 👍

I really really love her first three albums. they are all masterpieces in my opinion. true artworks. when the singles for Joanne came out I listened to them and was kinda half disappointed. I've only listened to the track Joanne a few times. it is a touching story and i dont think there is anything wrong with it. its just not usually what im "looking for" when I listen to Gaga (and other po-ish artists). I'm glad shes happy and everything but it's just not very interesting to me. I like the over the top super show artform thing more. i mean its interesting to get a very personal album but I woudnt wanna listen to several albums like that if they dont also "bring something else/interesting to the table" ;)

Joanne succeeded while Artpop failed at showing Gaga's vulnerability. For me, her vulnerable and honest songs were always my favorites. Songs like Brown Eyes, Speechless, Dope, and Swine always stuck out to me. So when Joanne dropped, it was great to have more of my favorite aspect of Gaga. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the shock rock inspired performances and the iconic costumes, but the stripped back authenticity is what makes her so loveable. Cheek to Cheek and Joanne made it easier for a mainstream audience to see her great vocal ability and authenticity that many people missed from her previous eras, although some of the songs on Joanne are just as shallow (haha) as her previous albums, like John Wayne and Dancin' In Circles. I'm also glad she didn't go overboard with the vocals on Joanne because it makes listening to it easier and a more causally fun experience. I struggle with really getting into a Mariah Carey or Beyoncé album because of the heavy vocal delivery. I think Gaga did it just right on Joanne.

I think your forgot to mention the Superbowl Halftime Show, which was the most important moment of this era. Before the Superbowl Joanne was half-flopping, with Perfect Illusion missing the top 10. Only after she nailed the Superbowl, showcasing her vocal and performing abilities at their best, the era became a success, with Million Reasons reaching number four and becoming a streaming hit. It was the Superbowl Halftime Show that reignited her career and led to A Star Is Born.

P.S. Also, ARTPOP is SO GOOD, I appreciate it even more now that I'm older then when it came out. I'm not actually able to get the people who still, year after year, claim to miss the Fame era (= the hits without even understanding its own profundity and importance).

It always makes me sad that people don't get that the art and artifice of Gaga's earlier eras were just as authentic and honest as her pared-back music. She goes into that idea in the intro of the "Marry the Night" video, when she talks about the lie being more honest than what actually happened. And that's part of the idea behind "Born This Way" too, how she wears prosthetics while talking about being born that way - that you create your own truth.
I'm glad that with Chromatica she's gone back to a bombastic pop sound, but the lyrics are very personal and open. I hope people can see that Gaga can be authentic and pop at the same time.

In the UK, Million Reasons only peaked at No 39. Gaga followed it up with a track called The Cure which got to No 19 but had a lot more radio play than the three actual singles from Joanne. I found that very interesting that she effectively put out a new track during the promotion campaign of an album when there was no way that was going to become part of a deluxe edition. Joanne was then released but didnt chart in the Top 40.
