Bicycle tour of Frans Halsbuurt - a parking-free neighbourhood in Amsterdam

- In 2018, the Frans Halsbuurt neighbourhood in De Pijp, Amsterdam was make parking-free. Street parking for cars was removed and turned into bicycle parking, gardens, playgrounds, loading zones, and handicapped parking. An underground parking garage was created for residents' and visitors' vehicles.
The city of Amsterdam is planning a larger re-design of this neighbourhood, but this video shows the current state, one year after car parking was removed. Plants have started growing in the gardens and the bicycle parking is well used.

In case anyone is wondering, the bikes with the blue tires are lease bikes. You pay a monthly fee, you get a bike with 2 locks. It breaks, they come fix or replace it.
Bicycle as a service, huh. Seems costly to me, but that's probably because I got a head on my shoulders and a pair of arms for wrenching around.
@@machinerin151 it's cheaper than buying a good bike new especially short term. Especially if you're a student with low income. It's also lower risk in terms of theft.

@@janjelinek4283 it depends on the city. In Antwerp it's 19.50 a month. 15.90 for students.
It's good for short term leases, if you're gonna use it for more than 2 or 3 months it doesn't make sense really.

Me, that's me too. I'm from Russia and while there is no single family suburbian world - everything is car infested to a point of collapse, just like if US or Canada lived in 9 floor buildings
@@machinerin151 not really honestly. Yes, Germany is better than most countries in those respects maybe, but a lot of our neighbors are way better, not just the Netherlands. And of course there are other countries as well that are atleast better with respect to public transport, like Japan.

Try to go for the intercity bike paths, with special bike tunnels, intersections, etc. In Haarlemmermeer (Hoofddorp, Nieuw Vennep, etc.) there is an amazing infrastructure for bicycles!
This channel got me to learning Dutch on Duolingo. It seems the Dutch have started redeeming themselves after what they did to the dodos.

Started watching these videos and surprised you haven’t mentioned the famous Albert Cuyp parking garage. These cars didn’t disappear - they went to the garage, which was the first built UNDER a canal. None of the lifestyle advances you enjoy so much would be possible without the engineering expertise of the Dutch people.
You don't want to mention what it costs using that garage ....
which tells me a lot about someone if they say that they live in Amsterdam and uses that garage.....

I’ve never seen street light suspended in the air and centered over the street. You should do a video on street lights. I grew up in Dallas, TX and now live in Asheville, NC and part of the stroads include ugly overhead wires and street lights.
This is very near where I stayed last time on 2de Jan Van der Heijden Straat. In De Pijp. Albert Cuyp Markt was only a short walk away. To me, it was the best area that I've stayed in.

I haven’t watched all of your videos yet, but I’m on a grind. Have you done one comparing dutch cycling etiquette compared to other countries? Is it worth getting into? Like do’s and don’ts. Though I do feel it getting worse and worse these days (people not sticking out their arms to signal a change in direction and such). But that might just be me. Wouldn’t be the first time where I’d have a conversation with people about how easy it is to spot tourists by the way they go about riding a bike. Wobbly steering wheels. Not sticking to the right etc. Rechts heeft voorrang. There is a smugness there maybe, but somewhat justified too? If there is one person who good make a genuinely interesting and fair video on the subject, it’s you.
The building you are biking towards at 7:07 is my school. It is a very nice building, you should see it once.

Yes, of course.
Not only bicycles but just about everything not firmly bolted to the earth gets stolen at some time at some place in the world. The Netherlands is no exception.
There's a joke about that. Actually, several. Yes, bikes get stolen. A lot. Locks, good locks, are mandatory once you get to city centers. One joke is that the average person in Amsterdam will spend more money on locks than on their bike.
Dang, there's got to be at least 30 bikes on those streets 👀
When the idea of removing parking there are always a lot of doubts. Obvious one is 'where would I park my car?' How did this go for this quarter? Where are they parking?
I see a few parking spots, who is allowed to park there for how long?
There are parking spots for disabled people, they're assigned to specific car number plates so only the person living there is allowed to park there. The other spots you see are "loading/unloading" spots. They're meant for package delivery drivers mostly, and also for construction workers if they come repair a smashed window or stuff like that, they need a place to park. So anyone can use them but you need a permit to park in them for longer than a couple of minutes. There's a few of those in most streets.
Looks awesome. How do the parking lots work? I guess these are loading zones, so I guess you cannot just park the car there for hours and block the zone all day.
There is an underground parking lot which is available (you can see the entrance on Ruysdaelkade where the white van blocked my way). The street parking is either by license plate (for handicapped spots) or for temporary parking. Ich kann Dir empfehlen um NICHT mit das Auto im Amsterdam zu gehen. Mit OV oder Fahrrad geht das viel besser.
Ich habe gehört von ein Freund aus dem Quelleinstraat/ strasse das vielen Leute die Parkinggarage nicht finden können. Die Parkinggarage ist meistens leer.

people here take pride in their bike in a sense and do not envy "car people" if the bike is the best way to get around its freedom, to not be dependent on parking, gas, time, rush hours. Public transport while its great its just much cheaper by bike but that is all because the infrastructure is so and being improved upon.
If the best way to get around is by car to get that sense of freedom people would take pride in that and make the car an extension of themselves make it their second home generally it fits their taste and its get improved upon in a different way which is more for cars in mind as its the best way to get around and people like their freedom to go places its just very different each has its glory.
I've been told in the States (obviously not everywhere) that residential areas a protected in a sense a lot so no business can build as it has resulted in the past with nonsensical buildings/factories that do not benefit/add to the locals whatsoever have dedicated zones for living, for commerce and for industries with zero tolerance of mixing.
is does end up in the big ass affordable stand-alone houses as ground value and population density tends to rise a lot when there are small shops restaurants parks schools etc close by
just having residential areas mixes with some commerce such as local cafes, bakeries, butchers, toystores(small), game stores art shops, general goods store end up getting people mixed up in each other lives.
People see each other bringing/picking their kid to school socialize while waiting, talk about stuff in common which is the neighborhood and kids school mostly, folks pass each other on the bike and say hi or bump each other in the store for small talk before heading on gets them supporting plans that might hinder them but deal with it, there need to be options though and/or exceptions.
people adjust there are always other options that people get reminded of if they complain about it xD.

All of the buildings look the same. Can you talk about what kind of activity happens in them? Are they homes, businesses, schools, etc.? How can you tell the difference?
Mostly homes and business. However the business are one streetlevel and above them can be housing. You can spot most of them by the logo's at the front. But also public spaces like restaurants or coffeeshops (the real coffee).
It's a late 19th century housing development neighbourhood of Amsterdam and it's still serving it's original purpose: housing and shops/businesses
I live in a large city with a lot fewer tourists than Amsterdam, and a (no longer deserved) bad reputation. I'd never post a video like this. More people might want to move here! 😃

They actually had to take down the IAMSTERDAM letters in the centre because there were too many tourists for the city to handle. All those concerns were pre-corona of course.

I just started watching so forgive me if this is covered, but I wonder how to make bikes a more attractive option in areas that have more hills.
I completely agree, the Netherlands is lucky in many ways as it's so flat which helps to contribute to cycling uptake I imagine (although tell me if I'm wrong) I live in Sheffield in the UK which is known for its hills. I sweat just thinking about cycling up one! And I live at the top of one!
@@Jcorfu between my home and office is a town called "Summit". You can probably guess why it is called that. I can handle that ride, but i get it one someone says they are not interested in that kind of challenge.

Mostly, it's a matter of mentality and conditioning. Once people get used to it, it will be trivial. If you've learned, from a young age, that cycling is the way to go places, that's what you do. If you grew up in a hilly area, trust me, you will grow strong enough to easily cycle through those hills. Just like people living in a mountain city get used to walking up and down slopes a lot, which would be murderous on even the most experienced Dutch hiker.
@@gerritvalkering1068 well, that's all good, but I was more thinking about how do you get people out of their cars and onto bikes in a hilly area. Where I live it's less than 1% bikes, and very few people are conditioned to ride a bike in the hillier areas.
How do people with mobility problems access their homes? Is there handicapped parking?
Yes. There is parking available to handicapped residents and the parking spot is only available to their license plate, if they own a car.
But in the Netherlands, handicapped people don't always need to drive here. They take mobile scooters, tricycles, micro-cars, or all sorts of other methods of transportation. You see these all over the city.
This argument is often used by people who don't give a sh.. about handicapped people - everytime someone's trying to improve the streets, bikelanes, road safety and such. To show it would be bad. The same people I see parking on the handicapped parking spaces at the shops ("it's just for some minutes") because they are to lazy to walk 15m.

@@jonathansandberg5983 Well, I did not mean you by that especially. Yeah, I am sometimes lost for words as well. People drag up all those problems which really are no problems at all. Even if we'd close down all cities for cars - which are at the moment the biggest problem - it would work. Just allow exceptions for handicapped, for trash collection, emergency services, city service, delivery and so on. Still, the biggest problem would be gone, and we can still figure out if we can improve the exceptions later.
My dream would be human powered micro-cars (or call them cabin bikes, they exist already) with pedal assist for the city. The profit would be instant: safer, quiet, no pollution, less space needed. Everybody who still drives one of the exceptions needs to take a special license, to make sure they take enough care.
Instead we try to figure out how we can cram more and more cars into the cities. The german minister for traffic talks insane stuff about how we can deal with this if we make the cars "smarter".
Well, I wish people were smarter...

This example pisses me off especially because those who are handicapped, or otherwise truly need a car, are actually benefiting from reduced traffic that comes when you are reducing space for cars. Those people who decide to take their massive cars for short distance crap, occupy not just the regular 10 square meters of public space, but a handicapped spot on top of that, and then don't even make use of the car by doing a large shopping tour and load that thing properly up, but just grab a handful of things... They are exactly the type of person who should not have a car and make it worse for everyone else.
You know, I often hear people wanting to ban cars altogether (especially Americans, but I guess that's just a dialectic response to the absurd amount of cars over there), but I absolutely don't think that's a good idea. Street parking is incredibly wasteful, indeed, but I still think parking garages can be a useful addition to a neighborhood. By that I mean a parking garage with storefronts at street level, sport courts on the top floor, greenery on the facade and what have you. Cars should be limited, but nevertheless available. As an urban planner you have to think 50 to 100 years into the future, so noise pollution and air quality won't be a problem when electric cars take over.

Banning cars altoghether is what creates "car free" neighbourhoods where people drive their cars right up to the door because they think it is too long to walk from the parking.
People rather walk 500 meter across an open asphalt desert than 300 meter along a city street when shopping, because the central parking garage is "too far from the shops".
Why would you use a building block for cars when you can use it for residential units which bring in tax revenue? It’s fundamentally a matter of efficient use of space. In inner-city neighborhoods at this density, only the most necessary cars and trucks should really be there.
And electric cars don’t remove noise pollution at higher speeds due to tire friction. Plus they’re heavy vehicles so at lower speeds they’re required to artificially make more noise than they otherwise would.
Now that you bike everywhere, what if it rains?

It always rains in Holland, and if it doesn't rain you het blown off your socks by the coastal winds.
So the Dutch say: "No such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes."
We weathercheck almost religiously, so we'll know when to take an umbrella. And because we have so little parking spots it safes space for buildings that people use. I live in the suburbs and have 5 small supermarkets within 20 minutes of biking.
So many bumps ups and downs.
At a low speed you don't feel any bumps, and that's the purpose, to encourage low speed driving.

@@NotJustBikes Well, that´s not quite true, is it? I know the Pijp very well and it´s a mishmash of roads, not just one-way streets. I don´t have a problem with one-way streets at all, because they´re necessary in areas like the Pijp, but be consistent, otherwise people will be looking for an exit and hence cause more congestion. Trying to make deliveries or moving is hell, because there are very few loading spaces. Seeing this is an area with a lot of shops, bars and restaurants.

@@albertspits8370 There seem to be a lot of open spots for delivery vans and when you're watching the video you see many transporters on their jounrey through the neighborhood. It seems not much worse then blocks with small roads and parking on both sides, where you have to decide if you block the road or search for a spot. Only that in this neighborhood, the spots are provided and you're not ending up not finding any spot and just blocking the road as you completely stopping to care.
@@MephistoDerPudel I know the area very well and I can assure you there is very little room for temporary parking such as removals or deliveries. You have to stop in the middle of the road, after which there will be a backup of vehicles and their exhaust fumes, impatience and quarrels.
No cars, but plenty of litter and overgrown weeds dotting the rather unattractive landscapes, in some places. The buildings are drab and uniform with very unimaginative and often incongruous architecture. The perfect neighborhood for those comfortable in stark and sterile surroundings.
